I live in the mountains and deal with power outages due to snow, winds, fires, etc. We used to have gasoline generators but running the heavy duty cords through the windows to bring power to our fridge, etc. was a real pain in inclement weather, plus we had to limit our power usage. 20 years ago we bought an automatic Generac generator - it works off our natural gas, with propane as a possible back-up. Best investment we every made. You may want to install one for your house - then your fridge, security system, window blinds, etc. will all work, even during an outage. We intentionally bought one with much more power than we needed so it never runs at more than 50-60% capacity (even when we are running the heater and doing our laundry). It is still going strong 20 years later. It is wired to our electrical panel and can run the whole house. We even run a cord over to our neighbor's home as he is disabled and cannot manage his gasoline generator anymore. Perhaps this would be a good investment for your house - before winter really sets in?
@carolewood77772 ай бұрын
@@Jewel-Retired Exactly, ours runs the entire house plus the pole barn without ever missing a beat. Within 30-45 seconds of the electricity stopping, our Generac starts and, like I said, never misses a beat.

Backup generator for the win! We lived in the woods about 25 miles south of Chicago- high winds and snow in the trees meant that we lost power often. That generator was able to keep our fridge running and the lights on, enough that we could function and not waste tons of food. It was the best investment we made for our peace of mind. Just do it, especially now that you have kiddos to think about.

Put a few drops of peppermint oil and a few tablespoons of dish soap in a spray bottle, fill the rest of the bottle with water, and shake well. Spray the mixture on any established nests or places where you've seen wasp nests in the past. You can soak cottonballs in the peppermint as well and safely place them near the entrance to the hive. Good news is the usually will not return to the same spot in the future. :^)

I am surprised you don't have an emergency generator. Especially living on the mountain. The three main prepping items are, food, water and emergency power. Yes you have a sufficient gas supply but electricity is also a must. Include a water filter and purification system. We run a gas cook top to ensure we can eat if a cyclone takes the power out. Even if you doubt you need to prep, in today's times we need to have sufficient supplies on hand for a minimum of 3/4 weeks of being self-sufficient. In all honesty once we got to a month's supply we went to the next level of a year. Our lives are no longer stable worldwide. Hurricane Helene just proved that point. Stay safe everyone, not stupid.

Wasps and hornets are pollinators just like bees. I understand having a problem when they are in your house or where you are working , it’s a problem. It’s important to remember that all life on this planet has purpose. Usually that purpose is a benefit to us as well. So whenever possible don’t kill creatures just because you don’t like them or you fear them. I took care of the wasp problem in my last house by providing them with water. I became a benefit to them and was never stung again. When the water was empty they would buzz around me until I filled the water. Be kind whenever possible

While your local power lines may be buried power still is transmitted to those lines from above ground. A back up power generator is a good thing to have, one that comes on itself when there is a power loss and transfers over automatically. Up where you home is you have propane tanks, not natural gas lines, so you would just have to make sure the motor in the generator is set-up for propane. Having a back-up generator is all that more important now that you don't live there full time. My wife and I took the financial plunge a few years ago to get one of those. Last winter when it was 5 degrees we were without power for about 2 days. Our whole house generator kicked in and the house came back to life. We had heat, lights, even cable tv and internet while all our neighbors were in the dark.

I'm almost 80. I grew up in construction with my father and two brothers all going into various aspects of it, all taught by my Dad, who could build anything. Little Leo playing with hammers and ably wandering the construction site, reminds me of my little brother and me. Carpentry tools were our first toys. When a little older than Leo, we even were on the roof assisting my Dad reroof the family home he and my Mom designed and he built himself. As strapping teens, my brothers and their friends would do all the scary things that Trent ably does. My big brother and a friend used to see who could run, carrying the most sheets of plywood or drywall, by themselves, or pound a nail all the way in with one hit. My Dad would shake his head and secretly marvel, but nobody got hurt. Made for good dinnertime stories. I know enough to be dangerous around incompetents and enough to spot shoddy work. Trent and crew, you're doing a marvelous build, very well done. I commend you for the quality of your work. I bet my Dad (and Mom) would too. Watching you all while you work reminds me of my childhood. And my parents had a wall in the house they kept changing over the years, tearing it out and redoing it. Nothing wrong with that. Perk of having a Dad who could do anything. Allie, like you, your Trent is a treasure. Love watching you and your 5-star build. ❤

I’m gonna say where I live wasps are continuously a problem and I do not like them either, but I do not have any resolution because I do not have anyone to help. so it would be a blessing to have people helping to resolve such a problem. Keep your chin up you you guys are wonderful.!!!

From what I could see, they looked like yellow jackets! Either way I'm allergic to bees so I get your fears Allie! Thank you for sharing and good luck! Love you all!❤

Wait until sundown, they will return to the nest. Once they in the nest spray with soapy water. It will get their wings wet and they won't be able to fly
