Are You a Beginner? Classic Progressive Risk: Global Domination

The question I'm asking in this video is: Are you a beginner?
The focus of this video is to review the basic heuristics we use for progressive cards in Risk as well as to pay specific attention to the beginner in the game. Ryan is a subscriber who is new to the game and I thought it could be valuable to review all my default rules and shortcuts for progressive strategy while also showing you guys what to do and what not to do from the perspective of a beginner.
I hope you enjoy!

Do you think yellow was thinking "why aren't they trying to finish continents" because if I were yellow these first 5 turns I'd be thinking OH MAN I HAVE THIS! 🤣🤣

We see a lot of newer players pay too much attention to the bonuses in progressive. Players of all levels are guilty of this.

Yes, once the game goes from a stable state to imbalanced it can end very quickly.

Prog wd is the thing I do best. It's not currently viable for ranking like it was back then which breaks my heart a little but it does teach you a lot of skills.
@RoyallyChiefd

@The Kill Pete Strategy Now, with the ranking system, I feel like even if I take 2nd place but finish better than 4 experts, that moves me up? So it'd be better to have matches with higher ranked opponents over equal opponents 🤔

Great video and great explanation of what to do and what not to do. In Ryan's case though, I would think that a mindset change would help him more as he should try to diagnose mistakes like from these videos and change his mindset to learn from these mistakes to improve.

It feels like even if you play "perfect" or very well if you dont match in at 4 is deah no matter what if your opponents also plays well. The variations must be very high.
@TheKillPeteStrategy

Yeah. Against good opponents not having a set on 4 in the late game on progressive cards is death.

Can you help me with a problem I have been experiencing playing Risk recently. Auto set up, fixed sets. At the start of some games players will let each other conquer a country and then will not invade each others country. They won't attack anyone but will just keep gathering armies. Turn after turn its the same thing no attacking, just collecting armies. I am a firm believer that weak players should attack the strongest player. But if I attack anyone's country then every other player will gang up against me...any suggestions?

what distinguishes a top 100 player from a, lets say, top 5000 player? I am currently ranked about 2000th but find it hard to rank up.
@TheKillPeteStrategy
@TheKillPeteStrategy 3 жыл бұрын
When we hit a plateau in our progression it makes sense to ask why. I have found the two things that have most improved my games recently have been: 1. Calming my nerves (breathing/meditation) so I separate my emotions from my game as much as possible. and 2. Paying as much focus as I can to identifying my mistakes so that I don't make them again. It's possible that you played perfectly and still lost, but it's much more likely that you did a few crucial things wrong to cause it. Figuring out what those things are is essential. As far as what the difference is between top 2000 and top 100. A lot of it comes down to practice. Make the mistakes necessary to learn.

after first match in, should you then match in on 3 if you can?
@TheKillPeteStrategy
@TheKillPeteStrategy 2 жыл бұрын
Hmm. It's very dependent on a lot of factors. Two key questions to ask are: Can you / will you survive until your next turn without trading? If you trade will you be able to make a kill so that their cards recovers what you lose making that kill?

I play the board game, but the card mod is so confusing. What is the different between progressive & fixed card mod. Some card you need all different shape other is all 3 different, very hard to understand.
