Great point about nutrient absorption - what a lot of people don't realise is, to put it politely, whole seeds, especially the tiny ones, tend to make their way out the other end intact by their nature - this is how plants use animals to disperse seeds! So for seeds that are too tiny to chew, grinding them up makes a big difference nutritionally, unless you only want the benefit of the fibre/bulk.
@Namelymarly
@Namelymarly Ай бұрын
Yes, very good point! One point I took away from your comment is this: Fiber is the one guaranteed benefit you get from eating the whole seed, but when it's ground you get the fiber AND the rest of the seeds' nutrients.

I know that flax seeds lose their nutrients if ground ahead of time so must be ground right before using, wouldn't chia seeds be the same? Wouldn't the omega 3s oxidize if ground days before using?
@Namelymarly
@Namelymarly Ай бұрын
Great question! As long as they're stored correctly (in an air tight container in the fridge or freezer) the level of oxidization is minimal. We always store ground flax and chia in the fridge/freezer. Bloe is an article that explains this. But if you feel better grinding immediately before using that's fine, too! www.eatingwell.com/article/290627/are-store-bought-pre-ground-flaxseeds-as-nutritionally-effective-as-buying-whole-seeds-and-grinding-yourself/

Watching Dr Greger is where I heard about grinding them too. 😊 I grind mine as I go. I don’t grind them in advance. So just in a small portion. I used to have a small coffee grinder attachment for my Bamix stick blender but it broke and I’ve never replaced it. That would have been ideal. So now I just grind a portion as I need them, with my small mortar and pestle. (I found it was much easier than the large mortar). I’m in Australia and yes it’s easy to find chia seeds in any supermarket. I’m using black chia seeds at the moment.

@ Yes I found the big one which I mostly use was cumbersome so I tried the small one, which I hardly use, but it was perfect! I didn’t replace my coffee grinder because we found vacuum packed ground coffee which became our favourite, so no more grinding. :) But I do think if I had one now I’d use it over the mortar and pestle. Thought I’d mention that because maybe someone doesn’t have a coffee grinder and the mortar and pestle works fine. I probably don’t grind every seed but close enough. 😂

I've tried many plant-based protein powders. One of the most affordable is Orgain. It's available at Costco and is quite affordable. It's a decent flavor. As far as flavor goes, one of my favorites is Purely Inspired Organic protein (I've tried chocolate and mocha peppermint and both taste amazing). I also really like Truvani. It's pricier but I wait for it to go on sale. Ka'Chava is also very good and great flavor but pricier. Of course, the time-tested plant-based protein powder is Vega. It's a solid product and well researched. A new favorite for me is Sun Warrior - they have a raspberry flavor I love because it tastes like a raspberry lemonade which makes it a nice, refreshing flavor. And the source of protein is different than pea protein. I hope this is helpful!

Great 😊 topic. I love chia seeds in a glass 12-16 ounces of lemonade lightly sweetened with 2 drops of organic stevia or 1 small package with a teaspoon or so of allulose . I first always put seeds in the cup no more than a tablespoon and a half, then I pour in premade juice mix and stir vigorously for about a minute and then I let it set. I find that this way allows for no clumping (the way if I put the water in first and then try to stir it.) and the seeds float freely within the drink. And when I mix this sweetener contents together, they help to offset each other’s flavor slightly, and it taste very much a kin to regular white sugar..

For last 15 yrs have used Chia seeds in salads, scrambled eggs (mixing… only after eggs removed from stove, as unsure if cooking would alter nutrients) From beginning ….used heaping 1/4 C Chia seeds to approx 2/3 C water in small jelly jar. Shake vigorously, leaving on counter for about 1-2 hrs….every half hr. give another hard shake. (Shaking keeps seeds from clumping.) Now I have a fairly thick jell which I refrigerate. 3-5 days. Each dad spoon-out a heaping Tbls. to salads, eggs, soups, yogurt, cottage cheese etc. Now…..what I don’t know……..has this soaking, gelling, softening method, made seeds as absorbable as having to fuss with grinding?

An interesting angle indeed. One thing for we viewers to note (not having a dig at this channel for this) is that it is becoming more and more obvious that some 'commenters' out here in KZbin-land are not ... ahem ... organic beings. In just the top few comments here there are two that are using identical wording and structure, for example. A bit of a warning sign that AI is in the woodwork.

I totally understand...and agree. It is one reason I do like Prolon. Have you ever tried them? They are super careful about the ingredients they include (and exclude). They are a company focused on longevity of the individual so I think that gives them an edge. Check it out. But, of course, chia seeds are a better plant-based protein option!
