Thanks for watching everyone! A good point several viewers brought up that I failed to mention is how the DATE CODE might only be printed on one side of the tire while the DOT code is often on both. It's possible a tire is mounted "inside out." So if you do not see the code on one side, then check the "back side" of the tire for the date code.

Josh, excellent video! To add to it....be careful when buying "new" tires also. My son bought a set of new tires from a "major box store" several years ago. I was looking at them sometime later....I understood the DOT code from work.....those "new tires" were three years old when they put them on his truck. Tires in all honesty have a recommended life of 7 years. Even as new tires sitting in the back row of the tire suppliers warehouse they were losing the oil in their composition....they were aging just sitting there. Those "new" tires safely had 4 years left to their lives. I bought a new set of Michelins for my truck this summer....I asked for the DOT date code on my new set before they stuck them on.....wouldn't you know.....they were only three months old! Yay!!!! I'll have many years of safe travel with them with proper care. Point being (finally) is that you even have to check the date code on new tires. The industry standard is that "new" tires up to two years old are acceptable. Personally....I wouldn't accept them older than a year old. Just me though....I worked too many traffic crashes where age and condition of the tires played a major role. After all ....they're the only part of your vehicle touching the road.

Hi Josh. Really appreciate your content. Don’t let up on tire safety AT ALL! I just had my first RV blow out two weeks ago coming home from a great camp outting, on my 4 year old (purchased new) unit. Date codes were late 2016 on the tires so 5 ish years old. No checks, no cracks, air pressure checked religiously and BOOM!. I’m still repairing, but it will be well north of $1000 damage with me doing the repairs and not including a new replacement set of tires. Tires are SO important. It cannot be over stressed.

My 2 cents. My tires were 7 years old. Told my wife “after the next trip we’ll replace the tires”. That was one trip too many. The passenger rear tire blew out on the freeway. $4,500 worth of repairs later I learned a lesson. Get a tire pressure monitoring system and don’t run tires more than 5 years. It sort of ruined the trip. Saving the trip has got to be worth something.

Josh, I just purchased a 2021 2509S and my dealer never mentioned tires. I didn’t even think about them until I saw so many issues in a Facebook group. Had the dealer taken the time to discuss the tires I would’ve known my lug wrench wouldn’t fit or the jack I have wouldn’t work. If I got a flat going down the road my family would’ve been stranded. I feel dealers should talk about this with newbies. I would’ve bought the equipment I needed on the spot. Dealer lost that sale. I’m still shocked Rockwood would give me a TPMS system with no way to change the tire. I mean, thanks TPMS for telling me I have a blow out but if I hadn’t done my own research I wouldn’t be able to change the tire out.

Thank you for your videos. We have taken them to heart and they have helped us ALOT. We have a 1985 Yellowstone 5th wheel that we recently, reluctantly replaced all 4 tires. They were at least 18 years old.. They showed NO signs at ALL of needing to be replaced on the outside. Treads and sidewalls were in perfect condition. However after we changed the tires the tire guy showed us where one was starting to separate on the inside. SAVED us from a potential disaster. Great video and advice shared. 👍 Thank you again. I work for a major tire manufacturer. Most trailers don't come with a major brand. Theres not much to do with warranty since you dont typically rotate or balance and align like your truck. Swap em out every 4-5 years regardless. Or 2-3 years for the oem lower cost that comes on most manufacturers. It's the only piece you have in contact of the asphalt and at 65-70 mph the contact patch gets even smaller than the footprint you see parking it in your driveway. They are rubber too my friends, so do your research and maintenance them like you would your rv roof. Every time you come home or leave for a trip check ✔ them out!

Thank you for this. This is probably the most RV/trailer specific thing. Your car tires will wear out long before they date out. Most people only inspect tires for tread and inflation and never consider degradation. Very few RV owners will ever wear out tires before they date out.

Josh, bought my new trailer and tow vehicle five years ago. The tow vehicle has 23,000 miles on it and the tires had some good tread on them, but I recently replaced the tires because there were micro tears on two of the sidewalls, very close to the rim. I have been told that with older tires, most of the time a problem can occur with sidewalls, not the tread. As for my trailer, even when it sits for a while, I check the tire pressure maybe every month or two, and if they are low a few pounds, I put air into them. If the trailer sits for up to six months, I move it about a foot, so as to try as best as possible to prevent the formation of flat spots on the tires.

Great video! I know first hand how having a $350 tire blow out on an RV can cause around $3,100 (or more) worth of damage to the RV itself. When I purchased my latest RV in 2018 I found the new tires that came with the trailer would not hold air over a period of time. After a couple of trips in the new trailer I just replaced the whole set with Goodyear Endurance tires......problem solved. It just isn't worth the hassle (or safety issues) dealing with questionable tires. You can't really put a price on the value of not having these kinds of problems. Happy Camping!

The first thing I did when I bought both my new trailers was to replace the China bomb tires with Goodyear Endurance tires. Goodyear Endurance tires are all made in the USA and they're rated for speeds up to 87 MPH. A lot of China bomb tires are only speed rated to 65 MPH. Even if you're buying a brand new trailer, immediately replace the tires if they say "Made in China" on them. I found that out the hard way with a brand new cargo trailer.

I’ve always changed mine out when they’re 5 years old. I was always told that 5-6 years old was when you should change them out. This is definitely a question that has so many different answers. Because tires are so important, I’m going to stick with the 5 year rule just to be safe. My parents had 2 blow outs during their RVing years. One was at 5.5 years old and the 2nd was at 6.3 years old. The tread looked great and the sides looked good too. They could’ve run over something though……who knows. I appreciate your videos, Josh. It brings attention to the issue and that’s important!
@asphaltadventurer

Depends on MANY variables. If a previous owner abused them by overspeeding/overloading for the first year before you bought the unit, the life will be much shorter. Starting from new, if you keep them covered, use them monthly to prevent flat spots, keep them inflated, and use stabilizers to take a little stress off them, they could conceivably be used up to 10 years. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jmjWlHt_q8-seM0 However, if I owned a single axle trailer, if you have a blowout, the whole side of your rig is resting on the axle, so I wouldn't run them as long. Depends on personal preference, budget, safety, and maintenance.

Here is my advice, if your RV tends to sit often and for long periods of time, at the 5 year old mark, I highly recommend to have the tires inspected by a professional tire specialist, the tire must be dismounted from the wheel and inspected from the inside. I would be happy to go into the chemistry, science, materials and construction behind my statement. I offen speak at RV rallies and seminars, and tell them the same.

As others have mentioned, if the code isn't on the outside, it will be on the inside sidewall. I REAL pain when inspecting Class Cs and As. Excellent information for a first year RVer. How about some advice on tire monitors…like do the screw on transmitters stress the tire valve and cause loss of tire pressure (vs internal). Replace the rubber valve with metal or internal?

Hey Josh, love the video for sure. Just a little feedback for you. You stated that tires can last up to 10 years on your RV. I was thinking does this mean unlimited miles? Some newbies may think that RV tires go by age and not miles. Hey, some people will pick this up but others not so much. Again, just a little feedback. Don't be mad, 🥺

Of course not regarding unlimited miles. But if you can manage to actually physically wear out tires then my hat’s off to you. That’s like actually finishing a tube of chapstick

Good info. Good thoughts. My understanding is that tire construction makes a difference. Many trailer tires are NOT steel belted radials. The bonding of the belt to the rubber is a concern. Steel and rubber do not bond without a primer. Remember the Ford Explorer and Bridgestone (?) Tire concerns? Steel belt delaminated from rubber. Nylon belted are different and last longer. Of course, only a tire expert or manufacturer could tell you for sure. And you know that won't be a number but rather a process diagram or what ifs.

I had a 2 year old OEM tire blow while on a short trip between local campgrounds. Fortunately I had TPMS installed and the only damage was to a fender skirt because I quickly pulled over to the beginning of an off ramp. The tire was properly inflated to cold pressure at 65 degrees and I had noted just before the blowout it ha risen to 71 which is within tolerance. After changing the tire we were able to continue the short distance to our new site, but our first move 2 weeks later was to replace every tire on the rig with "E" rated vs "G" and top rated by Consumer Reports. Goodyear Endurance American made vs "china bombs" installed as OEM. The old tires had less than 9000 miles and we did not hit anything in the road. I questioned the tire dealer and they said it was a catastrophic failure. Even with these new tires I will change out at 5 years. I can't strongly enough about one of every RV owners purchases should be a TPMS since most manufacturers locate expensive to repair areas above the wheel wells. A big chunk of heavy rubber with reinforcing belts will flog a a hole through the floor of any RV or tear off chunks of siding. A bonus effect was with the upgrade in tires we noticed an immediate increase in stability and tracking

Addition to the other remarks, be aware of weather conditions. For instance, 85 psi cold means that the tire has not been driven. But if it is 40 degrees outside, it make 85 read like 82 or 83? Whereas 115 degrees outside will make 85 read like 87ish? If it’s very sunny, one side of the rv will read hider than the other. I tend to check first thing in the morning, keeping my PSI pretty close to the max in cooler weather and 5 psi lower in hotter weather. My recommended is 110PSI and I have my tire minder set to warn me at 122 PSI. The tires regularly get up to 115-118 in the desert after prolonged driving.

Thanks Josh! I knew tires had made dates, but I didn't know how to read the date, no clue it was behind the dot code. So I do appricate all your efforts to educate us. When I first bought my first tow behind I parked it and forgot it. Didn't detach the batteries (no disconnect switch), I did clean and drain the tanks, I made sure I had the proper hoses and connections to water power and sewer before I left the lot with it, but didn't know proper maintenance. Much love from So.Cal.💟

Josh. Can you please do a video on how to pick out a good tire for your camper. I know people talk about the China bombs which I have seen plenty of pictures on. I also have seen Goodyear blow outs. I have heard Goodyear is on backorder so what are some brands to get and which ones to stay away from. Thanks. Love your videos.

Had a boat trailer and while checking the tires I noticed the treads in the center where raised up. The treads looked fine but it looked like the treads where separating from the tire. I changed all four tires and ask the tire deal why this happened, they are only four years old. His answer was I don't know but your lucky you got four years out of them. I have an rv now that is two years old , time for new tires. They are ome.

Just replaced my China made tires manufactured in August 2018 on my 2020 single axle Surveyor Legend manufactured in October 2019 with Goodyear Endurance tires manufactured in July 2021. I feel better now, especially with just two tires holding up nearly 5,000 pounds of trailer. $350 is a small price to pay for peace of mind.

Not sure what year model vehicle you were looking at there but to me that dd11 most likely is April 2011. I realize Dot codes several years ago had week number and year (eg 2218 would be May 2018) but I've noticed tires in the last few years have weird letters and such that have to be figured out different. But 5 yrs is certainly about the end of life on tires of any kind. I would never put cheap tires on anything, do your research and pick the tires you like. I run Toyo Open Country AT3 on my truck, I've heard good reports of Good year Endurance on camper trailers even though Goodyear is usually a terrible brand. FYI I spent 30 years in the automotive business, 21 of that in a Ford Dealership as a Senior Master (highest level) technician. Good video to get people thinking and aware. Good Day
