Is the gig a new thing? I ask bc I don't remember anyone using one when I was younger. I started seeing them maybe 20 years ago.

I'm not sure, I have seen some old time sofrim would create a notch in the bayis itself to hold it in place. Also there is a way to do it without the gid but it's more complicated. Maybe today people do the gid more because it's easier and it's works well.

I was taught to make a Shin on my upper arm then seven then my finger then another shin on my hand. It’s never exactly the same and I’ve never had boxes for my Tiffilin, just their bag.

@@TheSoferCenter My father’s Rabbi sent me a pair to use rather than mess up my Zada’s, they do not have boxes either just the bag. I need a Kosher black pen to touch them up.
