In either your first video or your second i said to you if you are going to be on youtube or any social media with your art you would have to grow a thick skin because there will be negative people saying negative things just because. A long time ago i was told that if someone says your art sucks or you suck its because they are jealous of you because they cant do what you can do. If someone critiques your work keep in mind that it is only an opinion. If it is basicly bashing you or your work and not giving you true reasons why or comments why they think something should be different than they have the problem not you or your work. As it is said opinions are like backsides everyone has one. DO you BE you and use every painting as a learning experience, look at it and ask yourself what could i have done better. If you do this self critique you will get better at anything you do. For you and everyone out there if you paint something or draw something or create something, You are an artist. If you sell something you have done you are a PAID artist. Ashleigh I am so proud of you. You are now using the undertones, sketching and blocking, blending, and spending more time on the little details. You can see how much better your paintings have become. I think you are at the point its just keep painting keep doing you. You inspire a lot of people by just being you and doing what you want to do. Lastly there are more people here to support you than to try and drag you down. Remember that. and smile

Im close to 40. When I was in my twenties I used to paint and sketch, it was my passion, but once I presented my work to people I was told I should just quit. And I did. I didn’t think like you do, if I had continued, I be much better now. I quit my passion and lived a life depressed and daydreaming of what could’ve. But I took painting and writing back, and I’ve never been happier. I no longer care what people say. To all artist, Please, please don’t quit your passion and just keep trying. You are awesome!! As a writer myself, what you said about dealing with negativity from others and from within is spot on. It's funny how really any kind of creative work/art is so similar. We are all pouring so much of ourselves into our respective types of art, and the fear that it isn't good enough or that people won't like it can be paralyzing at time. It can be so hard to put your work out there for the world. I admire you so much, and I am really enjoying your channel a lot! I've decided to get into sketching/painting as a fun hobby. A way for me to be creative without all the crazy expectations I put on myself with my writing. I also think it's fun to try different hobbies because I love to have characters with a variety of interests/hobbies, and in order to write about it, I need to have at least a basic understanding of it. I think the paintings you made in this video turned out beautiful!

thank you so much for this video! If it helps anyone, the way that i deal with internalized negativity in my own brain towards my art comes in a lot of forms. For context, i have a lot of ~trauma~ around making things and putting myself out there and doing things for myself. 1. is whenever you might feel shameful about creating, meet yourself with kindness. You didn’t chose for whatever happened that makes it really hard to believe in yourself. Your younger and current self deserves all the love it didn’t get when creating. 2. Make creating an occasion!!! So like i, even though I work full time and am in school, I have 1 day a week hard boundary that I have to make stuff. And so I wake up early, make myself a nice breakfast, put on podcasts , make sure I do everything I have to do before that day so my brain doesn’t try to avoid making things etc. 3. Remind yourself there’s a reason why you are having ideas or an urge to make things. And you deserve joy. 4. Ask someone to be your accountability buddy to make things. 5. Find community whether it be online or in person for art making. There’s a lot of great Facebook groups and insta spaces like The Jealous Curator (and they have a podcast!!) of people supporting each other creating. It really helps to normalize that it’s a thing you can do if you see people everyday doing it. All of these are forms of exposure therapy and if they don’t feel great doing it at first that makes sense and you aren’t “broken”. You deserve to feel joy and it just takes the dedication of giving your brain and your heart more memories of doing what brings you joy for it to start to feel like something you deserve, regardless of if it’s been months or years since you’ve made things . Please keep going. If anything, I’m rooting for you!!

However, recently I haven’t sold anything…like in over a year. I tried making an online store, but I haven’t even felt like painting, because I’ve felt that I have to paint what everyone else would like, what would sell, and not what I actually enjoy and feel deeply about. I’ve started painting for me again. If people like it or not doesn’t matter. It’s about my enjoyment and learning… So thank you for your videos. They’re really nice.

I have lost touch with making art for the sake of art, and put it all into if it sold or not. I still struggle years later to get back in touch with my creativity. i used to be so prolific when i was young. Now I feel empty. I have no way to share my art. i don't do social media. i have no friends or any social life. Why paint a painting nobody will see? That is the negative thought I battle. I don't fit in with the new online world and have been left alone in life. No place to share my art, so, i no longer bother. 🙁

Some negativity comes from jealousy. The ones who throw negative towards a positive is to bring them down to their level. Keep doing you, if you are a creative then keep creating there are so many consumers and takers in this world that we have to provide. Farmers provide food for us and many people say that farmers lives are boring and too difficult but we have to have them as a society, just like artists. Who do you think makes movies? Its not a bunch of non talented people on a camera. Its artists.

beautiful pieces... and great points about managing that vulnerability... i've even suggested not even showing to friends/family if at all possible when ur first starting out. y'know, it's like... are they necessarily true members of the audience your art is even meant for, if we're being honest? maybe the answer's yes, which is a gift, if true. but it seems to me friends and family more often come out on one of two extremes (neither very healthy for a new artist): a) 'omg you're the complete pinnacle of amazingness and no one's better,' or b) 'lol ur dreaming, give it up and do something practical.' ...i say show to strangers, instead. when someone u don't know says 'wait, is this your work this is amazing,' you know it's real.

Thank you for this video, Ashleigh, it felt so much from the heart 💚 I often find myself struggling with fear and the feeling of not being good enough. For a long time, I let this stop me from sharing my art with others, but this year I finally took the leap and started a KZbin channel. And I realized something - by sheltering my vulnerability, I was indeed protected by external negativity, but like this, I was also standing in my own way to connect with a lot of wonderful and inspiring people. Also, my internal dialogue was going on a rampage, so that didn't help :D I've decided now to focus on more appreciative self-talk, comparing my art to the art I've previously made while looking at the art of others to beat myself up but to inspire and challenge myself to grow as an artist. I hope you know that your art is wonderful and that you bring a lot of inspiration to others 💖

Hi. I watch a few of your videos and I enjoy them because your videos went deeper than just art but also the internal struggle as a professional artist. My first artwork was when I was 5 years old. Art has always been my first language because I can express myself more naturally with it than with words. I never became a professional painter like yourself. I went to college as an engineer but I still paint as a hobby. I always wanted more time to paint because that’s really my true passion. Engineering job just pay for the paints and canvas. With my art I never dealt with negativity because I never showed my work. I sometimes post on Facebook but rarely get any criticism. For a long time art was personal to me and I didn’t feel the need to share with anyone. I felt the joy that art had given me was enough. Many years later I had a change of heart. Watching the videos of yours reinforced my new view of my art journey. I am no art teacher. I probably cannot give you any useful advise. I am just someone who spent my whole life painting within my own world. I had fun doing it. But I think your way is better. I just want to write to tell you this.

Ahh such a soothing and lovely video Ashleigh! All those people passing negative comments actually don't know the reality of art. A very common misconception about art is that it comes from talent while an artist would know talent is only 10%, the rest is skill. All the practice and effort we've given to our talent over years brought us where we are. Therefore, I think it's better to smile and ignore the person who judges your destination while you're still in journey🤞🏻✨

Hi, I enjoy your beautiful art and videos. Most of all I enjoy that your art reflects your journey in life and growth. I am a self taught in art and do not consider myself an artist. I believe that each stroke of our brush is an expression of where our life is taking us. Please do not believe in what others say, I also believe that the art we produce is the reflection and a window into our individual journey. Keep doing what you do. Your inspiring more than you know. Everyone wants to know the personal story about each piece of art and the life if that artist, mostly after they are gone for the story of an artist is as much a part of the art they produce. I love following your journey here. Thanks for your inciteful art and videos.

I stopped painting 16 years ago. I didn't quit because of negative comments. I quit because I didn't believe I could make a living at it. I've started painting again. Oddly, I can paint better now than I could when I was younger. I was born to make art, and I have been denying my birthright. Self-doubt is powerful. Just have to keep at it, and never stop.

You are extremely talented. I do paint in my free time. Now less than before. I haven't studied Art. It's just a passion. People don't get why I put so much time, effort and money in my paintings. I have a full-time job that has nothing to do with Art. But I'm extremely creative. It's what keeps me going. I don't keep my paintings. I usually give them away. I share my paintings with those who find beauty in them and truly appreciate them. I lack so much skills I must say

I love that you keep your passion for painting even though others don’t always understand it. I agree, being creative is also something I’ve always had to keep in my life one way or another!

Ashleigh Siempre Sigue Adelante!!! Muchas Gracias

Hi Ashleigh... awaiting your next video. I hope the negativity hasn't slowed you down. People can be really mean and negative but when you address them in a video or slow down, you are letting them win. I find your videos to be very informative and you have a beautiful voice. I'm 40 now...when I was in my early twenties, I used to go for art classes and draw/pain regularly. "Watercolor shows how confident a person is. Your brush strokes are not confident." Those words from my art teacher hit me hard...I didn't dare try watercolor after. It's only in the last few months that I started drawing and painting again...and started with watercolor. I wish I had this access to information back then... Look forward to your next video...

your artwork looks even better than the examples you're using i can tell you've definitely improved!! I love your take on how being an artist requires us to be vulnerable and how that ties into constructive criticism because sometimes we can take that too personally especially in the beginning stages

Oh wow thanks so much Charla! And that’s a good point about how we handle criticism early on

Bravo 👏 👏👏 I loved the paintings!! At the moment, my fav is the still life. The colors are very pleasing, and the subjects are somehow comforting, but both are really good 🤔 I think you offered very sound counsel here. Negativity is a very real challenge. Thanks for sharing your insight. Also- I can see that it costs you to be so vulnerable, but it’s not wasted. Many gain strength, courage, and comfort from your willingness to put yourself out there. Thanks for pursuing your passions. ❤️☺️

Ashleigh Thankyou so much for touching this extremely important topic for your video. Negativity and criticism by people really makes it hard to keep going. To all the artists Let people say what they think but don't let their words discourage or demotivate you. Art is a journey and we are going ahead at our pace. We are fortunate if we are getting chance to pursue our passion. Keep going do not let their words affect you and your Art.

I'm usually the biggest critic to myself. But, nowdays I have more room for unperfection, so I'm usually okay with that what I do. I usually see what I need to do differently to make my art better. I also don't be nervous or anxious when I'm sharing my art online. Never had any bad comments so far, as I don't have that many followers. But this spring my biggest wounds came from school regarding my art. I had to share my vulnerability to other class mates from my paintings, like several of them. I wan't to be in charge what I share and to who, and I did felt like I didn't want to share some hard things to my classmates because the things I painted are my deepest feelings (loss, grieve etc). Sometimes when I like my painting (and when poured some soul and heart to it) I don't like it anymore after the critique. It was quite rare to me like my art anyway, so when I got critique (and I have to say, it was not a critique that I could use for future), I felt that okay this painting was not good at all and somehow I felt it was ruined and I also was tricked to show my feelings and then they got stomped to ground. I usually started to hate the painting after that. After one critique I cried and told this to my mom (I'm adult but sometimes enough is enough) and she said "Those harsh comments are like piss under spring sun. They will dry super fast.". For me that was a really good comment, because yeah, those comments just come and go. The only thing that matters is how I'm feeling about my art. If I like it, I can like it and there is nothing wrong about that.
@AshleighKing2 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for sharing this with me. I can definitely sympathize with the dangers of vulnerability from critiques. You're right, it is hard because we attach so much of our emotions and self-worth to our artwork. I also love the comment/encouragement your mom gave you! It made me laugh haha. I will keep it in mind for next time. I'm glad you've reached a place where your opinion about your art is what matters the most. That is a place I want to be all the time :) wishing you the best!

Again bringing important topics while doin a Masterpiece ❤️ it's very hard to deal with negative comments, but i always try to remember that I do for me, that others negative comments means nothing, they just wish they can do what you do. ALL FORMS OF ART ITS VALID, DO WHAT YOU ARE PASSIONATE ABOUT, IGNORE THOSE JEALOUS AND INSECURE ONES

Just discovered, enjoyed the words. Fun having some vlog style thrown in for the art supplies; nice to see the shop has original art for sale. Nice vibe to this video :) My obsession for art outweighs any self doubt or negativity I may have; it’s helpful to know all creative people have this. Trusting process and looking back at past art usually find actually it’s better than you remembered or see how far you’ve come 🥰

Bad or good, it's always subjective. Some people hate realism and love abstract and visa versa. Every likes different things. The only thing that matters with art is to ensure colors are harmonious and that the composition is dynamic and balanced, with good contrast, depending on subject or style of painting. Otherwise, the style you choose will always have lovers or haters depending on what they like. Thanks for your lovely videos!

I can relate to each and everything you said♡ Just remember that you're a beautiful human who's also an amazing artist and we love you and your artworks❤(also your dreamy vlogs helps me to calm my anxiety so thank you) Do you think a beginner artist should create a KZbin channel especially if they're not 100% confident on their artistic skills?
