Thank you
Hi
First, and repeating what I say in the video, I lost some footage, and did gave some wrong info at some point... got it corrected later though...
I did not wanted to just scrap the rest of the footage, nor hide my failures...
So, did my best to make something out of it...
Take that in consideration while watching and commenting!...
So, this one came to me due to the engine light being on... after a scan, two fault codes for intake and exhaust camshaft...
Again, and as usual, this came to me after someone else worked on it...
I did some mistakes along the way, but got there in the end...
Follow me on this video to find out what was the problem and how to resolve it.
Hope you enjoy the video.
Any questions or comments put them below.
Like always, thank you for watching!

That is so freaky. Had exactly the same fault on the same engine a few months ago. I did find the fault by scoping a good engine with the faulty one. The head gasket had been done and the firm that skimmed the head had broken the same tooth off - or so we thought. You did say that the customer had said initially nothing had been done to the engine before the fault had occurred - did I misunderstand?. I'm wondering now if the skimming firm didn't break the tooth off and this problem is a weak tooth manufacturing issue. The firm did totally deny they had broken anything. Interesting problem. You can bet we are not alone with this issue. On a side note, the actuators had obviously been messed with and as far as I can see this must have been for the same issue. Somebody has omitted info that should have been passed on regardless. Anyway, good fix 👍

someone was simply using the camshaft's alignment plate at the back of the camshafts as a locking plate for undoing and tightening the cam gears, whereas as it was mentioned in the video, they should've used open end spanner on the hex shaped parts of the camshafts. the back plate slid out while under tension and knocked out one of the teeth probably not even realising. it's quite a common mistake and if one does a bit of a research before changing the cam phasers they know what and how to do. even if they had managed not too knock a tooth out they would probably get an error for cams being out of sync because it's virtually impossible to maintain proper synchronization only holding cams with the back plate and the gear alignment tool. it is a pain enough trying and doing it without a second person. ideally it's a two man job, even the workshop manual says so 👍

Inlet phasers are different to exhaust phasers,they look physically different and have different part numbers. Timing is done by fitting a plate to the other end of the camshaft to lock the camshafts. Phaser locking tool sets the phasors to be in the recommended position.

Hi. Love your movies. can you plese tell me from your experience. How is the 908 pro doing in 2022? I have opportunity to get new pro with 3 years free update or elite with 2 years update. Just wonder if is worth to spend on those older platforms or go for 909/919 series.
@LMAutoRepairs
@LMAutoRepairs Жыл бұрын
Hi If you can go for the 919, go for it... The built in oscilloscope, signal generator plus all the standard functions of the pro, definitely worth the investment... This obviously, if you are going to make use of those functions... If you only need scanning and the odd special functions, then the 908pro will do the job just fine... Just my opinion... 👍👍👍

@LMAutoRepairs

Will not move under normal conditions... But in the unlikely of moving, the only thing it will do is that will throw codes for the timing... A new camshaft would allow the ring to move just as easy... if forced obviously.... 👍👍👍

@@LMAutoRepairs great video as always. Thank you for the effort. You did went on the rabbit hole with this one. Sincerely I would have tried to weld the broken tooth right there on the spot. Quick and dirty. 4 little welding spots on the sides of the tooth would have done the job. There's no mechanical pressure on it. Just needs to stay attached. Thank you for the case study!

Hi thanks for the reply don’t know how to explain but Astra j 2012 1.6 Sri petrol 2 times I had miss fire and loose or burn oil,when you drive the car hill it won’t go need to drop the gear and make it noise from under tho bonnet like a cranking noise when you continue to your foot on acceleration and smoke coming from the exhaust also it’s kind of breaking when accelerating so most of the time I have to lower the gear and pulls up also the engine gets really hot like I can feel when you open the bonnet and replace the ignition pack and super plugs just yesterday but I have still same problem everybody say something like fuel sensor,maf sensor ,crankshafts sensor, I could explain better if I could speak and also where is your location I m in Cornwall thanks hope you can sole my problem thanks also you could find me in messenger so could do call

Nothing to say. Yes you could have scoped the timing. It would have saved "some" time but the work would have been the same . What makes you a good diagnostician, and mechanic, is your ability to think things through. You are not a DIYer Luis. Looks like you are a master. I have seen a few cases where a tooth was broken of the cam reluctor, because of the same thing you said, but only once I've seen a shifted one. And that was even pretty obvious. Nothing compared to yours. Yes the scope is a fantastic tool. Sadly not all mechanics know how to use one. Great diagnose and repair Luis.
