NOTE FROM TED: We’ve flagged this talk, which was filmed at a TEDx event, because it falls outside TEDx’s curatorial guidelines. This talk only represents the speaker’s personal views on astrology, which are not corroborated by credible scientific research. TEDx events are independently organized by volunteers. The guidelines we give organizers are described in more detail here: storage.ted.com...
Astrology is not just a party trick; it is an ages-old symbolic language and healing art that was essential to our ancestors. Astrology is a guiding tool that holds the potential to launch humanity into a new paradigm of awareness and interconnectedness. We are all astrologers, and to remember this is to reclaim our relationship with nature. Virginia Rosenberg is an intuitive astrologer, writer, teacher, and lecturer. With a background in anthropology and post-colonial studies, her main interest is natural healing of self and society. Virginia has performed thousands of readings for clients internationally. Her writings are used as teaching tools in spiritual communities worldwide. She offers workshops, classes, and retreats and is resident astrologer for several organizations. Taoist philosophy, dance, and inner alchemy practices inform her perspective. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. I LOVE this soo much! I recently found astrology, unfortunately through the loss of my 22 year old son, who used to ask me all the time, what my time of birth was, just so he could do my chart. I never got around to telling him and after he passed I discovered we have the same moon sign. Since then I can't learn enough about astrology. It is seen as a joke to so many people that is is refreshing to have this Ted Talk to use in defense of it. THANK YOU!

I know that you definitely continue having a contact of some kind with people you love who are not here anymore. I do that with grandpa. Recently I discovered his moon and it makes me so happy to know we were spiritually quite similar. Astrology helps a lot! Your son is around and you'll always feel it, just like I can still feel my grandpa guiding me )

I think this is an interesting way to look at astrology! Not as a 'personality test' but as a cyclical system of symbols, star navigation and the chronicling of time. Stars, planets and astrological bodies have a rhythm to them. Human calendars are formed from ancient civilisations' graphing of those movements, not the other way around. Before 'birthdays', people would work out their age through movement of the stars.I personally disagree with the coloration between the full moon and ER visits. That seems completely empirical. But I have been using the symbols of the moon phases (New Moon as a time to prepare, full moon as a time of action etc) to increase my planning and productivity. Civilisations used these phases and applied symbols to plan crops, and I can see why. Seeing why older civilisations noted particular movements/cycles/seasons and how they made these imto symbols really fascinates me. It's the intersection between anthrolopogy and physics. It's physics before we had enlightened science.

For those who want to know the Science behind Astrology,read the below excerpt(it's very long): In March 1951,an American radio engineer John H.Nelson discovered that there was a degradation in propagation of radio waves with respect to different position of planets and at different angles. Now,what has radio waves has to do with humans? Well,radio waves as we know is a form of electromagnetic waves. Now even human brain emits Electromagnetic waves which are better known as brain waves(EEG-electroencephalogram). Now both radio waves and brain waves are a form of electromagnetic waves. Here brain waves are weaker form of electromagnetic waves which are very hard to measure unlike radio waves. Now,if certain position of planets in space can cause disruption in propagation of radio waves,then it can also affect humans too. Dr.Percy Seymour(British Astrophysicist and Astronomer),PhD states that the revolving planets plays a very important role in the development of foetus and in brain development of a human baby. The revolving planets orchastrates solar activity and geomagnetism. “An English astronomer named Percy Seymour has formulated a scientific theory of astral influences that describes the solar system as an intricate web of planetary fields and resonances. The Sun, Moon, and planets telegraph their effects to us via magnetic signals, says Seymour, an astrophysicist and respected authority in the field of cosmic magnetism. Omnipresent throughout the universe, magnetism is known to affect the biological cycles of numerous creatures here on Earth, including humans. In sum, Seymour’s multi-link theory proposes that the planets raise tides in the gases of the Sun, creating sunspots and their particle emissions, which then travel across interplanetary space to strike Earth’s magnetosphere, ringing it like a bell. These planetary magnetic signals are then perceived by the neural network of the fetus inside the mother’s womb, heralding the child’s birth." It is observed that magnetic field of Earth changes daily and seasonally. This fluctuations in Geomagnetism have an effect on brain. The Geomagnetism is caused by the revolving planets which causes Solar activity which is said to be responsible for Geomagnetism,thus the planets play a major role in brain and body development of human foetus. Scientists found traces of magnetic compounds in the human brain, specifically in the cerebellum. The cerebellum is at the base of the brain and was, until recently, thought to only control simple movement and spatial awareness. Yet, scientists have now realized the cerebellum controls much more: “There is increasing recognition that the cerebellum contributes to cognitive processing and emotional control in addition to its role in motor coordination”. Scientists have also recently discovered that Earth’s magnetic field changes daily and seasonally. Magnetic shifts have a demonstrable effect on alpha waves in the human brain. Research shows that alpha waves affect personality: “There is a link between alpha waves and personality traits, and this link implies that there is an underlying relationship:” The Earth’s magnetic field changes regularly, thereby affecting the magnetic compounds in the cerebellum in similar ways during brain development, resulting in similar personality traits for those developing at similar times and in similar locations on Earth. According to Dr.Harold S.Burr,Professor of Anatomy at Yale’s Medical School,states that complex magnetic field not only establishes the pattern of human brain at birth,but also regulates and control it through life. “Dr. Harold S. Burr, emeritus Professor of Anatomy at Yale’s Medical School, states that a complex magnetic field not only establishes the pattern of the human brain at birth, but continues to regulate and control it through life. He further states that the human central nervous system is a superb receptor of electro-magnetic waves, the finest in nature. (We may walk: with a fancier step, but we hear the same drummer as the oysters.) The ten million cells in our brains form a myriad of possible circuits through which electricity can channel.” For me Astrology is the collection of almost all Scientific disciplines which are referenced under 1 name called Astrology. Astrology includes Astrophysics+Geophysics+Biophysics+Neuroscience+Psychology+Physics+Biology and so on. It gives the idea that Microcosm(Quantum Mechanics)=Macrocosm(Astrology) The phenomenon occurring in Macrocosm is nothing but the reflection of Microcosm.

Thank you for putting this out there, I felt the same way not long ago where I was becoming unwell and looking for a way to improve my health, well being and lifestyle. I feel that self-understanding and expression is the best and most thorough way to achieve this. In my journey so far, I have been shown more of life than I have had in my previous 30 years, healed in profound ways mentally and physically and looking forward to what life has in store! I hope more people become open to the path of spirituality and integration of this ancient and very innate way of viewing the world.

Some people are easy to manipulate that's why astrology sells. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with reading the stuff or tuning in to readings on youtube but it's frightening to see how adults live their lives by astrology. What the astrologer says to them holds so much sway that they are totally disappointed when the predictions don't happen. The more frightening thing is that some astrologers behave like they have the authority to tell their audience how to be. Some astrologers are fine in the way they go about it but others behave like they are your aunty or grandfather. It's a problem when people believe too much that what they do or something they believe strongly in can be used to bring about social change and they then advise the unthinking masses how to go about it. It's terrifying how ready people are to believe anything.

But I guess you should be much more frightened by FOX news, Channel 4(UK), BBC, Newspapers, etc... They influence much more people to do much more bizarre and horrible things, like going to war over some lie they have just conjured up. ( 45minutes claim, etc... ) As far as I can tell I don't recall no astrologist being one billionth as destructive as those entities named above, don't you agree.

Astrology is not manipulation, unless used by an unscrupulous person, the same way a gun can be protective or destroying, depending on whose hands it's in. Get a reading by a professional, then come back and comment.

Astrology isn't about selling or manipulating anyone - or even making predictions; these are common criticism used to discourage the practice. Astrology is essentially about our inherent connection to celestial bodies and how our ancestors noticed patterns in the cyclical movements of the Sun, Moon and stars, which they connected with cyclical events in their lives. It was a way of making sense of the world and their place in it, which is perfectly understandable for that time period. Maybe just avoid astrologers who frighten you or act like an authority - and especially the ones who charge excessive fees for fortune-telling. But if people wish to study astrology personally, for insight, guidance, reassurance or whatever other purpose, then that is their choice.
@VelhaGuardaTricolor

@@JWM80 As an engineer I have learned different materials require different handling. They all have different characteristics. Over the decades dealing with people I have come to notice people are different from one another. Astrology helps us to understand those differences therefore helping us to better understand ourselves as well as all others around us. You can do anything you want with a piece of wood, make a sculpture from it, burn it, or leave outside to rot. But it will never be steal, nor copper, nor glass, nor anything other than wood. People can be very different from one another even from the same star sign, but there are common characteristics. Those characteristics are what Astrology studies. Anyone who tells you anything other than that is either lying, don't understand about Astrology and thinks in terms of prejudices or knows something I have never heard of.

Great video. Only looking at your sun sign though is a big reason people discredit horoscopes. Most don't understand that your sun sign is only your personality. To truly understand yourself a full natal chart is key. Some people relate more to their moon sign (they identify with their emotions) or their rising sign ( they identify with the mask they wear for the world). Every planet has a place a meaning in your energy including many many fixed stars. I highly recommend everyone to get a full natal chart at least once in their life. Just be careful who you give that full information to. An educated person in this area can use that information to manipulate you. I think it's best to get the chart done by someone who has no stake in your life.

"Astrology contains a wealth of records that comprise a shared human story." Bingo! The study of astrology gives a sense of purpose and direction, helps to embrace gifts and make better and more meaningful decisions. The critics who are hearing a message of causation are missing the point. It's a system of pattern recognition, not cause. The purpose of astrology is to tap the language of human imagination and move beyond it. The extra-human world is far greater than our tiny, linear experience of life. Ancient people knew this through observation and experience, not indoctrination. Truly actualized, creative, successful people still use this same intuition and instinct all the time. Mediocre posers are the sad critics who cling to their indoctrination and throw rocks at anyone who attempts to experience the cosmos on its own terms. Read Plato's The Cave for a better idea of the dangers of looking directly at the night sky and then trying to share the experience with subjected others. It never goes well. Thank you for this lovely reminder to go outside, look up and wonder.

The Egyptians came to understand that when they saw the heliacal rising of Sirius, it coincided with the flooding of the Nile - this does not mean it was the cause, but that a relationship between the two occurrences was identified. It's the very basis of early astrology, essentially a symbolic system. Megalithic structures, built to align with solar and lunar orbits on specific dates, is another example of humanity's early relationship with celestial movements.

It's not that the star caused the event on earth, but the event on earth lined up with the star. To think that a bunch of stars inconceivably far away are there to serve us is unbelievably self-centered. In reality, it's a matter of humans pinning meaning to abstract things and claiming significance.

Notice that she conflates science with a "separationist" (whatever that means) and "individualist" lens at 3:45. That's a nonsensical characterization of science. Also, sailors do not use astrology to navigate. The full moon does not actually correlate with increased ER admissions (this is an urban legend). This talk is vague, grandiose and wrong.
@debbie_sacredmoving
@debbie_sacredmoving 4 жыл бұрын
Yes it is true that it is an unproven statement about the ER but she didn’t state this scientifically. Also I wonder how many studies were conducted and how reliable they were? She states this because if you ask people working on those evenings they will say there is a noticeable affect. Perhaps the ‘science’ is too keen to confirm its own hypothesis that astrology is nonsense. Good science of course would do everything to disprove that hypothesis.

If you've never had an astrology reading, please don't comment because you're making HUGE assumptions about an art that has been around for thousands of years and utilized by kings, world leaders and billionaires. You don't know enough to comment, if you've never experienced a reading by a professional. If you've at least had one reading, then please make an INFORMED comment. Thank you for your cooperation.

What a beautiful talk! I felt this in my soul. I grew up Christian, and as I got older and educated myself about religion, I realized I was atheist and fell apart. I felt like life was meaningless and went through a major depression. Astrology brought me out of that, and helped me find meaning and purpose again. I don't believe in a traditional "God", but I believe in the Universe and in devine oneness.

Navigating and Agriculture with the help of stars are real applied sciences, Astronavigation (a interdisciplinary field between Astronomy (with emphasis on the NOMY part) and Geographie, while agricultural astrology only works, because certain stars begin to rise at certain times in the year, it is just simply a very crude calendar. All other applications of agricultural astrology i. e. moon gardening or planting according to the zodiac signs have never been scientifically evidenced. Appendix 1: To suggest that the moon has influence over our bodies because they are to 75 % made of water is just simply baffling. It is not the water that causes the tides, it is the huge mass of the oceans, which pull on the moon. And of course the moon has a emotional effect on humans, because there is a giant shining circle in the night, we are evolutionarily primed to notice such things. Also nitpick: the moon is not a planet. The seasons are also not made by the stars, planets, moon or sun, but by the axial tilt of the earth (well of course the sun sends the light to earth but more not). Appendix 2: Actually in this age of climate change and manmade disaster, we need science more than ever. Who else can fix our problems? Astrology? Well, I certainly don't think so. The incredible thing about science, and actually looking at the stars and the cosmos is, that by trying to understand and explore them, we not only gain insight into the universe, but also into our lives and problems here on earth. And in itself Exploration is not a bad thing.

It has something to do with the gravitational effects of the Sun, the Moon, and all other planets towards the brain cells certain specific gravity-sensitive genes at the moment a baby is born. The specific genes react/respond to the gravitational stimulation. It is followed by a self-configuration of the gravity-sensitive genes acting on the target genes. The moment a baby cries just after birth, substantial amounts of 5 MeO DMT is naturally produced in the baby’s brain. It is this special substance which triggers the onset of genetic configuration towards the target genes associated with the core personality settings of the baby. The substance lasts for only a few minutes in the brain and is quickly metabolized by the body. After the genetic configuration associated with personality setting is completed, the gravity-sensitive genes are sequentially turned off and becoming inept ever since. Thus stops them from reacting continually to the gravitational stimulation. Only a fixed type of personality is decided by nature. The so-called twelve archetypes of zodiac signs are actually determined by the angles from the Sun, the Moon and the rests of planets in the solar system towards the gravity-sensitive genes of a new born baby’s brain in relation to the earth axis. The baby’s brain is all too smart by doing all the self-calculated geometry stuff and the earth axis is detected by the baby’s brain gravity-sensitive genes. Simply put. Different angles, different zodiac signs. The same goes for the Moon and all other planets in the solar system. For example, a baby born on June 23. The earth axis is perfectly tilted at 23 degrees with northern hemisphere facing the Sun. That is the first day of Cancer sign. If the Moon is at the opposite side of the earth on that same day, the baby has a Moon in Capricorn. Think about it. The effect of personality fixated setting is permanent and the fundamental core personality cannot be altered throughout the entire lifespan of an individual.

There is no way possible for biological cells to sense a) a gravitational difference from the different positions of the planets and b) to sense differences in gravity by the angels of moon and sun. The differences in distance (and therefor gravity) are relatively so minuscule that it isn't noticeable.

That stuff about sailors, the flooding of the Nile and solar eclipse is absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with astrology; that's observation of movements of certain stars and planets which is basic astronomy. And what's that drivel about the Moon's effect on the water in our body?! Will Ted/Tedx be inviting homeopaths to the stage in future?

The fact that the Nile flooded annually when the heliacal rising of Sirius was observed in Egypt *is* astrology. There is no direct cause/effect between the two - the point is that a correlation was established. And that was the origin of astrology, just as solar and lunar movements were noted to coincide with other events in human activity. There doesn't need to be a scientific explanation, it was a symbolic system of observation.
