Disclaimer I haven't bought one, I've only looked at AM5 motherboards lately, but this one may very well get the closest to the exact feature set I want. Sure it's not cheap, but that's an AM5 problem right now, not an Asus or Prime problem. This thing in particular does give off an aura of "set it up once and then run it for years" enterprise workstation settings, and that's what I actually like about it. - The PS/2 port (in fact the only AM5 board I could find with one) and the USB 2.0 ports and headers for legacy components and peripherals. - The reasonable number of SATA ports for legacy drives (a lot of AM5 boards only give you four which would already be too few for me, let alone two). - The actually useable secondary and tertiary PCIe slots at 4.0 x4 each, a lot of other boards throw a completely pointless PCIe 5.0 x16 primary slot at you (you can run an RTX 4090 on PCIe 2.0 x16 with minimal bottlenecking, so bottlenecking 4.0 x16 is not going to happen for years to come) but then you only get one other PCIe slot, let alone two, and that slot throttles your primary one if you populate it, or it operates at some bullshit PCIe 4.0 x2 or PCIe 3.0 x2 so fuck whatever you planned to put in there. This on the other hand is a setup that's just balanced and makes sense. If you only throw the fastest graphics card you can find and a single NVME into your computer then you obviously won't care about this, but the rest of us does. Also the VRM is perfectly fine if you fine tune your CPU power consumption and don't just run it out of the box like a complete stump. And really how often to you need a Q-code display or gimmicks like onboard power buttons anyway? The clear CMOS button and BIOS Flashback button are there for absolute catastrophes, and otherwise once it works it works. Me personally I'm glad this board is configured exactly the way it is because no other board is, and it may very well be the one I end up buying especially if I can wait until the first price cut.

Thanks for your comment :) Have you checked what Gigabyte has done with 300 bucks ? ( x670 aorus elite, I made that review). Your points would be valid if ... there was simply no competition :). Sure it's fine... if it was $190. At 300 bucks it simply makes no sense, neither in componentry nor when compared to its natural competition :) I hope this helps 🙏

Thanks for your review. I'm living in pain with this motherboard since the beginning. Got a Ryzen 7 7700X, so as not to be too ambitious, and 4x32GB of Kingston DDR5, checking that the memory model was officially compatible with the motherboard. When I turned on the machine, it was flashing all over and taking ages to show anything on the screen. I double-checked my build, everything was correct. I thought the motherboard was defective, and was about to return it. Then Asus released a couple of bios updates, and things improved a bit. I just went with whatever bios defaults they have, because I'm terrified of changing anything in the bios and having to wait half an hour for the PC to boot again.

TBH 12+2 VRM is MORE than enough, i was running with my x570 which had 12+2(60amp) 5900x overclocked and still had to limit the power what the motherboard wanted to give to the cpu, also 50c vrm is ok result since you dont have ANY airflow there.. But yeah, got that board from the Blackfriday offers.. has been OK board for the price, no complaints... a bit of memory issues and some but that is to be expected since new platform, strugled the same things even more with 12600k at launch.

I threw 600 euros down the toilet, I don't know if the card or the Ryzen 7 is buggy. It did the POST a couple of times, I navigated through UEFI, everything is fine, CPU temp is normal etc etc. then on the third reboot the CPU fan stopped spinning and there was no more video output. it's ridiculous, in 25 years I've never seen something so unstable. I did everything possible, updated bios, reset bios values, monitor always black. I'm returning them both to Amazon, I hope they accept the return, but I have little hope.

The RAM LED was on so I was assuming that it does not recognize the memory. I started testing only one DIIMM at a a time hoping that maybe one of the DIMM's is not defective and the system would boot. As you have said I was just nor waiting long enough.

12 VRM phases should be fine even for overclocking. Either you have a board which has a problem or Asus botched their implementation (MSI did this in their initial low end to midrange X570 range) Maybe they could send you another board to see which it is.
@Laurentschoice
@Laurentschoice Жыл бұрын
Well, actually it is fine. I made some research. The problem here is the CPU. AMD has advertised a boost clock of 5.6 GHz for their 7900X. They forgot to mentions that it's is a single core boost. In a multi core OC you can only hope for 5.3ghz at best. Not very honest practice from AMD if you ask me.

@Laurentschoice
@Laurentschoice Жыл бұрын
I feel that in your case I should explain a bit more thoroughly. If you take a 5900x (that's ryzen previous and equivalent generation to the 7900x used in this video ), The boost clock is advertised at 4.8 Ghz. You will have no issues clocking the 5900X all cores (meaning the 12 of them) at 4.8 GHz. Actually mine is running at a comfortable 5GHz for the past 14 months. In this generation of Ryzen processors , boost clocks no longer apply to all cores, but to a single core. Which does make quite the difference performance wise. I hope this clarifies it for you and that it will help you better understanding the current and to-come reviews. It is an important distinction for this season .

I wasn’t sure which board to get to try to get an upgradable board that I can drop in either 7000 future AMD processors. Like a 78 100 X 3-D, I’m hoping this will last for years to come. If nothing else I got a good case and a 1200 W power supply so if the board does not work I can always just take it out and put in a new one. I was hoping to be able to upgrade to a future AMD a.m. five socket processor and drop in a 4090 or 7800 XT. Do you think this board will work to do those things and drop in a new process or in the future? I really wanted some thing that was Upgradable

The biggest joke is that it lists "QLED-core" under the features, but I don't think that's actually implemented. According to the Asus website, QLED-core means the power LED should blink if there is an error, and the blinking code indicates which error it is. But I can take all the RAM out of my board and still not get the "DRAM error" blinking code. The manual doesn't say anything about it either, other than listing QLED-core in the feature list!

Err. no the PS/2 is not great for your grandfather but for me as a gamer with my pwnzor QPAD MK-80 for nkey rollover and usb driver independency. In fact, this is one of the very few AM5 boards with PS/2 support, a definite buying reason for me. That the backplate comes as a loose part is on the contrary of absolutely ZERO NAUGHT NISCHT importance to me, wonder why this is so important for you to ramble about. :p And it works absolutely fine with a 7800X3D, I think your CPU recommendations are too conservative here. For now 250 EUR it was my board of choice (and not even for budget constrain reasons), ofc I would´ve thought else if I went for a 7950x instead. But this board provides a kickass gaming rig with RTX4090, 64 GB of OC´d Kingston FURY Renegade RAM, Asus Essence STX2 audio card, extra LAN card. Plus aethetics in a white Fractal design case plus white NZXT Kraken AIO. I say: Perfect board for this use case. Would have been nice to find some benchmarks in your review cause I came to find these and compare but naught.

@Laurentschoice
@Laurentschoice Жыл бұрын
Hi jake :) . I did add a correction to that very point in the details of the video ( go to "correction") In a nutshell, I was expecting the 7900X to be able to OC to its boost clock, like any previous (recent) intel or AMD CPU could. In our car 5.6 GHZ. When testing the OC abilities of the mobo, it would freeze and crash at about 5.3 GHz. Consistently and no matter what. After making some further research, I did see that AMD advertising 5.6 GHz boost clock were somewhat ... hopeful. 7900X and 7950X can reach 5.6GHz in a Single Core configuration. If you are going an Multi Core setup (like every computer in existence), you will not be able to go beyond 5.3 GHz... which i find absolutely dishonest coming from AMD. For the rest, it doesnt change my conclusions much. It is a good board, no doubt, but its pricing is simply too high and puts itself in a precarious situation if compared to equivalent competition. It is sub-200$ board sold at a premium tag. Thankfully, it seems to be a one-off thing for ASUS, as the TUF and STRIX (wrapping the review) are absolutely phantastic products, which bring quite a bit more for their new pricing. I hope this clarifies.

You say it's not worth it (and make good arguments why it isn't), however as it's one of the only AM5 boards to include a fourth PCI-E slot that will allow it to demand a premium. Of course the question has to be asked why most manufacturers thought buyers would rather have 4x M.2 slots and 3x PCI-E slots than 3x M.2 slots and 4x PCI-E slots in the first place. While most users won't want to install three expansion cards (excluding GPU) I'm sure there are more of them than the ones who want to put 8-16TB of NVMe storage in a consumer board (and even then they could do that with a fourth PCI-E slot and a £10 M.2 card).

Wait, how is a 52 deg VRM under stress test not recommended for a 7900x or 7950x, and how did you not know the boost clock was single core when it basically always has been. The zen 2 scandal was born due to chips not hitting their single core speeds but even then it was still single core and not multicore. I don't really want to be rude but if your cpu's isn't a great overclocker it doesn't mean the motherboard sucks or the vrms are bad. Those Amps are more than enough, we had 100w chips running on shit 200Amps boards with barely any heatsink and now for a 190w load 840 Amps are not good enough? Im not sure you are right.

It is . I think that I was very clear in the video that temps results are unsurprisingly good. Boost clocks and all previous processors ( Ryzen 5000 or current and previous Intel CPUs) use their boost ( or turbo in Intel vocabulary ) as an overlooking base line. The fact that Ryzen 7000 series advertize boost clock which can only be applied on a single core ( ok 12 core CPUs) is clearly ... well let's say... inappropriate :) The point of this review is that ... for 300 dollars you should be expecting much more.

The post delay issue has been largely resolved with AGESA 1003 BIOS update. Post times are down to about 20-25 seconds from power on cold start. I woul dlike to at least see an optical audio SPDIF on this board, and I feel like all motherboards in this price range should have an integrated IO shield.
@Laurentschoice
@Laurentschoice Жыл бұрын
Yes I saw that. I had the same issue with the TUF x670E (publishing tonight). Once I updates to the AGESA 1003, itactually posted and posted fast.

There's an SPDIF header on the board, all you'd need to do is run a cable from it, and apparently you can order ones online terminating in a slot cover for any unpopulated PCIe slot. Or you just throw a sound card into one of the thankfully plentiful PCIe slots since the ALC 897 is the definition of MEH anyway.
@Laurentschoice
@Laurentschoice Жыл бұрын
Hi there and thanks for your comment :) What you are pointing out it true but that cost more money :) ... for a board which has the financial space to add a SPDIF . And a SPDIF output is really the only way to get the best possible potential of even a mid range codec and avoid the purchase of an external audio codec. I hope this helps and clarifies :):):)

I found it on Amazon (UAE) but it says on the Product Details section, the memory clock speed id 2133 MHz, while on the provided pictures it days the memory clock speed is 6400 MHz (OC). But that is a huge difference between the base speed and the OC speed. I don't think in reality 6400 MHz can be reached with all DDR5 rams that support such speed

Dude ... 720 amps for the CPU not that much ??? Sure not for OC , but an 7950X 16 Core lowered to 105W TDP will run perfectly fine with only 3-4 % loss in multicore Performance while Games run as fast as with 170WTDP , i am sure that there will be a teamed mode ( previeous Asus Boards had it all ) = if you dont use the IGPU the 2 Phases for the IGPU can be used by the CPU as well = up to 120 Amps more for the CPU . You can run one 5.0 NVME + two 4.0 NVME SSDs on the onboard slots + additional two 4.0 NVMEs if you buy PCIe M2 Adapter , 3.0 rated ones cost only 2-3 Dollar each and i would not be suprised if they can run at 4.0 speed as well since there is no chip on the PCB , only rewireing = finally i can use my old 1TB and 512 GB NVME SSDs again ....

You are spreading nonsense. These VRMs are more than fine for any CPUs. They are by far not the best, however Bullzoid was clear, all those x670 motherboards are hosting overkill VRMs. You got 50C on the VRMs, it is more than good. If you spread nonsense, be ready to get slammed!
@Laurentschoice
@Laurentschoice Жыл бұрын
It is a fine VRM, indeed and by far not the best. As I said during the review, temps are unsurprisingly good. I struggle to see where we might be in disagreement. As far as Bullzoid goes, he is a great reviewer and his opinions should be taken into consideration if not celebrated. I hope this clarifies and helps you better understand past and future reviews. 🙏

Save your Money$ AND PICK ANY OTHER Brand.... Asus has failed as a Tech Company, after 15yrs I've decided the X670 Family is worthless and Blew up the X670XE Asus motherboard (Using heavy Explosives to make sure it was unUSABLE {Editors notes, it Melts as Fast as Being turned on} and so i've optied for MSI or Gigabyte to use PCI 5.0 with some Stability... Sad day, but I needed a system that didn't Forget my PIN more then ONCE!!!!!!!!!! I rather Build a Linux system then use ASUS....and then attach Opiniheimer as a Support Agent... more Stable than ASUS in 2023
This trend NEEDS to stop with motherboards!
