THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! I wish I had seen this video when I got my turntable back in April. The tone arm balancing instructions were incomplete and never said anything about setting the tracking force or skate. As a result I had to take a guess and the weight of the tone arm squished and deformed my stylus. I just bought a replacement stylus and stumbled across your video. I can't express how helpful and informational this has been.

In the manual, one will find on page 5, Initial Setup: Setting the Voltage Selector Switch This turntable has the capability to be used with either 115V or 230V AC power, 60/50 Hz. The voltage selector switch is located on the top of the housing deck, under the platter. Set the switch according to the voltage in your area. [See Figure 4.] (Note: The turntable comes shipped with the voltage selector switch set for 115V AC.)

Excellent set-up video. I foolishly tried to set my system up just using the instructions, and it didn't work (only had audio coming out of one speaker, and was very quiet). After watching this, I realised I'd put the counterweight on the wrong way round. After following this guide, my turntable now works a treat, and has given a second lease of life to an old surround sound system.

To anyone considering purchasing this turntable. There are a couple of things you should know first... I purchased one a few years back, right off the bat the platter was BADLY warped & the anti skate did not work AT ALL (which are two common problems with these tables). I mean it did absolutely nothing, it was useless. I called Audio Technica about the platter, they told me to take a video of the platter spinning & send it to them. I did that & they told me to send the warped platter to them & they would send me a new one, which they did. When the same model in glossy black was available to purchase (AT-LP120BK), I sold mine on ebay & bought the newer, black model because I definitely preferred the black finish over silver but mainly because I wanted this table with a WORKING ANTI-SKATE. After setting it up I found the anti-skate on this one also DID NOTHING AT ALL AS WELL!. I recently contacted Audio Technica telling them exactly what I have explained here, & to my disappointment, they replied with an AUTOMATED message. "Hi James, Thanks for the inquiry and contacting Audio-Technica U.S., Inc (ATUS.) The AT-LP120-USB was designed as a DJ turntable. Due to its excellent sound, quality and low cost, audiophiles started using and recommending it as an audiophile turntable. The AT-LP120 was designed with the DJ in mind and has features to meet that need such as being able to reverse the direction of the turntable and robustness for record scratching. According to one manufacturer of high end phono cartridges and tone arms, a somewhat weak anti-skate mechanism might be just right for low-compliance, DJ-oriented cartridges and one of our other competitors even recommends setting anti-skate to zero for DJ use. Therefore, the AT-LP120-USB does not have the same anti-skate adjustments that you would find on a high end (and high cost) audiophile turntable. You may look into the AT-LP5 which is more designed for audiophiles and has a stronger anit-skate." Basically, they are telling me if I want a WORKING anti-skate, I have to purchase their $500 table. They are also saying the table was designed with the DJ in mind & because of that the anti-skate was made "somewhat weak" on purpose. Firstly, the anti-skate is not weak, it is NON-FUNCTIONING. Secondly, this turntable has been modeled after the famous Technics 1200, which is a DJ table. Does anyone think that table has a worthless, "weak" anti-skate? I highly doubt it. I am not knocking the AT-LP120. It's a very nice table for the price but to replyi with an automated bullshit response, especially to a customer who has purchased TWO of their tables like myself, is unacceptable. There are better options if you are looking for a table in the $250-$300 price range. -U-Turn by Orbit -Teac TN-300 is very nice -Denon 3P-300F -Pioneer PL-30-K (although some people complain the speed is off) -Rega RP1 If I had the chance, I would have purchased one of those instead of the AT-LP120.

I am on my third Audio Technica LP120-USB turntable in this past month. What do I mean by that? I had to go through three exchanges before finding a unit that didn't have warped Di-Cast Aluminum platter, Anti-Skate that actually works. And most of all, one that has a "quiet" direct drive motor. I would also like to know why every unit that I have opened, the packing styrofoam is broken. This is an indication that the units that I have had, were returned previously, and put back on the shelf. With my current unit, I am questioning the Anti-Skate. Unless it is set to zero, the pull of the tonearm is extreme. Since I do not own a groveless record for testing the anti-skate, I have used a CD as a substitute. Correct me if I am wrong, but shouldn't I be able to center the tonearm on the center of that CD? Set at Zero, it veers to the spindle, as expected. However, when I turn it to one, that tone shoots over to the far right. I am talking off the CD/ Off the platter. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I sent an email to Audio Technica, and never heard back.

After setting the tone arm, when I attempt to set the stylus tracking force - it throws off the tone arm causing it to drop once I remove it from the locked position. Am I doing something wrong? I followed the exact instructions on your video... Set the recommend stylus tracking force by rotating the entire counterweight assembly counterclockwise. The force gauge ring will move along with the counterweight, allowing you to set the counterweight for a specific tracking force.
@AudioTechnicaUSA4 жыл бұрын
Hi there! Based on what you wrote, it sounds like you are doing it correctly. When you balance the tone arm, you are basically setting it to zero/neutral tracking force, which makes the tonearm hover. Then when you set the tracking force by turning the counterweight, the arm should drop because of the weight of the tracking force which you have applied. For more information, please contact our Audio Solutions team at audio-solutions@atus.com. Thanks! - A-T USA

@6:27 - "The PHONO/LINE switch does not affect the USB output" Is this true? I just spent 30 minutes trying to figure out why I wasn't receiving any sound in Audition nor Audacity after connecting the LP120 via USB to rip some vinyl... until I switched from PHONO to LINE, which did the trick. This seems to make sense, since LINE ensures that the signal is routed through the built-in pre-amp and I (unfortunately) wasn't using an external ADC... Is my guess correct? Curious to hear why I wasn't getting audio via USB with the switch set to PHONO, in any case...

+Michael Angelo An RCA to 3.5 mm (1/8 inch) adapter cable is included with the turntable. The speakers must be powered (also known as active) type speakers, not passive type speakers which require connection to an amplifier or receiver to function. With powered type speakers, just use the included adapter cable to connect the turntable to the speaker(s) and make certain that the selectable phono pre-amplifier located inside the turntable is turned on. That is, the pre-amplifier selector switch on the rear of the turntable needs to be placed in the line position. - A-T USA

@robsemail4 жыл бұрын
This model turntable has been replaced with the AT LP-120XUSB, and the reviews for the new model say that the anti-skate is fixed. The new table also features a better cartridge, but the tonearm height adjustment has been removed. I recommend the next turntable up the line for Audio Technica, the LP-140, which costs a little bit more but gets you a dampened platter (the 120 has an un-dampened platter which can sometimes create resonance issues), heavier tonearm counterweight, better direct-drive torque, as well as the tonearm height adjustment and an excellent deejay cartridge. If you’re not a deejay, the cartridge also gives excellent audiophile performance, but you’ll want to replace the stylus with an elliptical type.

How high should you set the tone arm's height, if you're using the standard 95e cartridge (the one whose weight is 1.5-2.5 grams)? Should the height be calibrated to a particular number on the circular height adjust base? Or should you just use a ruler to measure the height from the base of the turntable to the tip and end of the arm after calibrating the tonearm's weight?

Apparently it's just me but I cannot get the tone arm to balance. The weight seems way too heavy because it either takes the arm all the way up or it's resting, I can't find an in-between. I keep stopping and coming back to it because I get so frustrated. I went online to check out if anyone had tips but it doesn't seem like other people are having this problem.

Not once in this video he mentioned about the TT being set on 110 Volts.Not once the Audio Technica even mentioned it in the instructions that comes with this TT.Shame on you and your company,I don't know how you pass quality control.Under SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS in your manual that comes with this tuntable you don't say anything about this TT being dual voltage and you would think that that would be the first thing to let the buyer know.There are so many people who use 220 voltage.I've bought your TT and plugged it in to 220V and now it is not working and ofcourse the place I bought it from tells me that it is my fault.This is the last that I'm buying something from Audio Technica.Totally careless and unprofessional.

The manual in the AT-LP120-USB I received this week was very careful to mention the 110/220V switch underneath the platter, and to make sure it was set properly before applying power.
