I disagree. In most places in the US a child can drive at 16. While a sixteen year old might be able to stay on their own for a night or 2...they can also make very stupid decisions and get into trouble. After are, they are a child, their brain is NOT fully developed and are generally making decisions based on impulses and emotion. Another couple years bring so much more maturity...still not fully mature even at 18, lol. But technically an adult, that hopefully you raised to stop and think and even discuss with their parents or other adults before acting on them.

In the original story the son was already 16yrs old and in the US it's allowed to leave 16 years old children home alone.

Missed the part where Jake learned that Op's mom threw her son under the bus blaming him because she didn't want his elderly mother in the house and Jack listened to her not talking to Op she admitted that she lied and this is the reason why Jake and his sons treated Op so bad. Jake wrote an email apologizing his behavior and said he only listened to Op's mom. And yes if Op is only 16 then the mother could have been charged with abandonment by leaving him alone to go on vacation. Op was very much in his right to go back to his dad's house.

Alex never should have called his mother. She never defended him or tried to include him in her new family. As soon, as he found that letter, he should have responded with "Fine." Then blocked their numbers and just left. He didn't need to call his mom. She cares more about her new family than her own son. If anyone was selfish it was her.

Jake wasn't upset with the OP's mom because of the robbery or her neglect. The fact that it was his handwriting meant that he was the true mastermind behind the entire thing. He was just angry that he lost out on a free housesitter and everything. He allowed it to happen, and openly encouraged it. He's just angry he got caught, and it might affect his life. So he cut ties and ran.

The mental health and safety is the first concern of a parent, period. Not her libido. More importantly than an unhealthy marriage was the health and welfare of my son, whom.I chose to raise with the help of my parents and siblings in the face of adversity. My son is now single with no children and takes care of me. We live independent of each other but close enough if we need each other in any capacity. If anyone messes with either of us, you best believe that will be their worst nightmare!😂

I had to believe in myself and love with the family that loved me. It hurt but i was not some toy to be used for money and be a in home slave . To be left behind as i did everything and my step parent with two daughters could do no wrong and i was blamed being the only boy in the house. When they left to yellow stone for a 3wk vacation and i was banned from going for getting s C+ in math.. I knew finally i had to thing of me after 3yrs . I packed and left to go to my Dad in the next town 65miles away. My dad filed for full custody. the hurt was then Mom came back.. No call, No Letter, No showed in court..i was 14yrs only..

Good for you. In my case, I was the only child of parents who, bluntly, would have been better off childless. In my case, the golden child was my cousin (who ended up being a d abusing drinker who never really had a job but that's another story) with me as the scapegoat. I never did anything right or, if it was too flawless to criticize, I had to exceed it next time. They really didn't seem to get why I grew up, got out, and didn't look back. Shrug. Dad's dead, Mom's senile, and it's supposed to be my problem. I intend on investing as much care in the issue as they did in me.

Absolutely. Love and Respect are Earned. NEVER due. & no one has the "Right" to lay claim to you simply because of a biological event YOU had no part or say in. Family is made in Life, NOT in a bed. If your "family" betray your Trust, then they are not family. simply beasts that rutted & spawned you. Your Family may be the Close Friends - "Brother from another mother" type set up, who have Hard-Earned your Love, Loyalty & Trust - often through fire & water. They may be the Family you have CHOSEN through their own Good Faith. NOT some accidental blood-bond to a group of people who neglect, betray, ill-treat, misuse or abuse you because "I'm your parent. I can do anything I want to you. I gave you life - you OWE me..." horseshit. You "owe" your parents, siblings etc ONLY as much as they gave you in your life. You owe NOBODY! a damn thing for simply being born. You did not ask for it. You had no choice or say in it. Existence was foisted & forced upon you whether you wished it or no. Your parents OWE YOU the needs, raising, choices & opportunities that SHOULD come with existing.

This creator skipped an important part of the story. The reason the stepfather and step kids treated op so badly is because his mother was telling them lies about op. She kept telling them that he was bad mouthing not only the 3 of them but her too. She told them he was a poor student and bullied other kids and that he was always in trouble at school. Once the custody case started she confessed she lied to her husband and that is why he decided to divorce her. He told op what his mother had been saying and doing and apologized to op.
