Well, from the point of view of common users, Linux is still complicated and nerdy (It isn't after all, but thats what most people think). I think when people see how easy it is to use Ubuntu, Linux will easily wipe windows from the market. Many users aren't happy with Microsoft's choices in design and when they see how beautiful kde and gnome are, they'll change in no time. It's all about an image change for the word Linux I think.
