Those 5 executives could be paying themselves $1 million each- still a crazy amount of money- and Unity would have made $145 million this year. Instead they're laying people off and scamming devs. Insane.
@Jaydoff

I think Atrioc has been making a great point in his recent videos. Even if you're a free market capitalist, you have to agree that it simply does not make financial sense to pay top executives as much as they're currently being payed. The math isn't mathing.

@@Jaydoff People think CEO's have "responsibility", and they do. But most of their job is just delegating, think about it: if you're on top of everyone else, what work are you actually doing beyong nudging people this way and that so they push things your way and you can take the final decision. CEOs are responsible for the company, but they are not truly accountable. I have yet to see a CEO that does not fall upward with a golden parachute worth millions. If you get paid a ton of money when you fail, that's not accountability.

@@UnarmedBastardI genuinely believe that for every active corporate CEO position, there are hundreds, if not thousands of people that are just as qualified that would take the position at a fraction of the price. @@Jaydoff I mean, for sure. When you look at Elon Musk being hailed as a Genius among entrepreneur and see the decisions he takes... Industry inside knowledge. The reason why a lot of people join these "insane Squid games"; where the conditions are inhumane, is because they often don't know what they are getting into... literally. They get told hey "it's just a game show with a lot of contestants do you want in; this could really help your acting resume". And once they say yes they are put under immensely restrictive and punishing contracts. If they "quit the show" it often results in massive penalties; including being blacklisted from the community, so people just force themselves to stay.

The fact that Unity’s Chief Marketing Officer makes over $32,000,000 while being the worst marketer throughout this entire year is truly something magical. She got paid $32,000,000 to damage trust to the point where people started making high-end tutorials on how to use their competitors, and people started dedicating portions of their revenue to funding other engines, VOLUNTARILY at that. @kennymuller3115
@kennymuller3115 Жыл бұрын
@@DozIT yeah that's fine and all because you have to accept it again but there is no way they can legally come up with a "we can retroactively change the tos you have already accepted" that's the same as going "we can change the terms of our contract retroactively whenever we want to." I don't live in the US nor do I have any knowledge of US law but if that's allowed Americans live in a fucking banana republic. At that point any contract would be essentially meaningless since one party can just put weird gotcha clauses in there and be like "look this is the contract we changed after you signed it, it is somehow still legally binding now. Eat shit peasent." Might aswell turn that south park episode with apple and human centipede docking into reality lol.

So annoying when people put all the blame on Riccitiello when he was there for a lot of the good shit that people liked that changed in unity....while people completely ignore 3 of the board members that joined after him that started milking Unity with the companies they came from. These board members are STILL THERE and are almost certainly the ones that hardpushed the pricing changes, but now they get a scapegoat on the altar and everyone like Atrioc reports "the problem is gone now!" because of it.
@dreamisover9813

Yeah, that's pretty much how I see it too. Whether decision making and leadership will be better or different with the new CEO still has to be found out. One complaint many had for years with Unity is that tools and features are often specifically made to lure in beginners whereas for more experienced users, newer solutions are either too incomplete or too buggy to use in a production environment, or simply lack some features. Some older but well working system are stopped being improved for the sake of their new solutions (I'm mainly concerned about the render pipelines here). Even with all that though, there are so many great third party tools and resources to solve at least a lot of these issues, and it's one aspect I like so much about it.

When the trust for Unity gets fucked, doesnt that mean goodwill on their next quarterly balance sheet should be like negative.
@dreamisover9813
@dreamisover9813 Жыл бұрын
Highly depends, the engine aspect on its own doesn't get Unity "that much" money, and many people that proclaim loudly to leave Unity are smaller devs and indie studios. There is a huge breach of trust and uncertainty of the future of pricing/licensing, and it's reasonable to look for alternatives as a big company - but on a technical level, Unity is still technically the best tool for a lot of games and companies already have existing tools, workflows and experience for the engines they are already using. I'd expect the next quaterly balance sheet to not look that great either - but more than monetary loss, if many people really ended up leaving, there would be other effects which can make it harder to recommend to beginners in the future. Currently, from the available engines, Unity has the most community driven resources and tutorials. Communities on Reddit and Discord are also quite active for people that seek help. It's a huge plus for the use of the engine - when people encounter issues or bugs, or try to solve technical challenges, they often write about it, make videos, etc. Others look for the same issue, find solutions to it, and it minimizes frustrations and helps efficiency. I'm pretty sure the amount of people switching to different engines is not significant enough to really affect that, for now.

Talking about the housing situation it’s absolutely crazy to me that I make six figure salary and I still can’t afford a home. Now, I am working on my credit which got wrecked during college. But I also have no credit card debt. I technically can afford a home it’s just I want to keep the mortgage to 30% or lower of take home pay while still living 20 minutes from the city. And I can’t find a modest 4 bedroom home cheap enough. But still. It’s ridiculous that housing has gotten so expensive that i would be paying over 30% on housing even though I make more than double the median salary. I genuinely feel terrible for people who are not in my position who make even less than me because I’m not rich by any means but I thought that I would graduate college, get a good job, and be able to buy a home for my family and that hasn’t happened yet.

Honestly, part of it is just for the company's own protection and I get that - I'm taking a financial accounting class and I got a peek into just how badly a rogue employee can mess up a company they work for when the company's not prepared for it. But surely there's a line that can be crossed for some companies where the security becomes excessive, no?

One thing I never understood, how could Unity legally Change their terms of service after a game has already been completed? That seems to be illegal on its face correct?

yes, there was a push to report unity to the federal trade commission because of this fact.

You are correct, that would never fly in court or anywhere else. Realistically speaking, the former CEO just tries to push this "you won't own anything and you would gladly pay for that" thing, and he doesn't give a shit what happens to Unity. He's like an ideal IRL reference of term "Corpo-rat". What's scary is that they only have to succeed with pushing this kind of shit *once* - afterwards it will just became a new standard. Same as false advertising (for example, Warcraft 3 Reforged clearly used the "improved cut-scenes, changed story" but there was literally none of that) for games and releasing barely-functioning game - those are just "normal" now when previously would be considered a heavy fuck-ups or even law-suit material.

If Unity actually wouldve gone through with their plan, they would have been sued into the ground, if that gives you some perspective.

Basically in 2021 they added a sneaky clause in the TOS that allows them to alter the TOS within certain parameters for games made on Unity past that point, games before the TOS change, basically before 2021, are safe to my understanding but any game made during or after 2021 can have their TOS altered at any point with very little restriction because of that clause, and because you signed the TOS saying you're ok with the fact that your terms could be changed I honestly doubt they would be legally responsible. You signed a bad contract essentially, its on you.
