"No Disc" error appeared in the corner of my monitor and no recording was taking place. Struggled to figure out what the problem was and then I found this video. Today 01/02/2019, I start trouble shooting my Lorex DVR, I knew it was something to do with the DVR. @12voltvids3 жыл бұрын
It took me awhile to find it too. I checked a bunch of stuff before stumbling onto the power supply. It's a very common failure of all electronics. We have them fail on pvrs at work all the time. Many techs just swap the Pvr and not the power supply because it is in behind a cabinet or something and they are too lazy to fish the power cord. Then the new one acts up and I get dispatched to an angry customer that tells me that the box has already been replaced. First thing i ask. Did the previous tech change the power brick. Usually the answer is "I don't know" because especially now with covid we don't want customers hanging around too close while we work on the house. I pull the power brick, find it is usually hot as a firecracker and covered in dust confirming that it wasn't changed last week. Swap the power supply and guess what, problem solved.

Sure you could replace it with an SSD and you will be replacing it every year or sooner as SSD are not designed for constant write cycle. @KevinRoberts9496 жыл бұрын
Are sure you had the correct power supply? It looked like a 2Amp. I have a similar situation with several Q-See DVRs. They were never used but 8 yrs old. I assumed the large power adaptors (3.5 or 4Amp) were for the DVR and the small one like yours was for the cameras pigtail splitter for cam & IR emitters. I just looked at the manual and it shows both supplies are the larger brick type, which is not what shipped. After a few days of use, the HDD Alarm went off, (no drive). I swapped out the DVR and the drive wasn't detected on a DVR I had been testing with a different power supply. Like others have noticed, It seemed like the supply worked enough to run cameras and DVR electronics but not spin up the drive. BTW, Q-See DVRs for either 4 or 16 cameras were shipped with 3.5-4.0 Amp Power Supplies, and you appear to be using a 2 Amp.

@12voltvids4 жыл бұрын
@@nguyen6330 Because Lorex like ALL companies today do not want to deal with out of warranty technical issues. They got rid of their service engineers like everyone else. Notice I said service engineer not service technician. A technician replaces parts using the designated service procedure. Not all service technicians are engineers. A service engineer on the other hand has a greater working knowledge of the product, understands electronic engineering theory and design. Knows how to read a schematic and understands circuit behavior went it is operating, and more importantly when it is NOT operating. That is the major difference between a design engineer and a service engineer. The design engineer understands perfectly how a circuit operates when it is operating correctly. Put in a couple of bad parts and some design engineers are at a loss because they have no experience with the different failure modes. This is where the service engineer comes in. Myself I am a service engineer. I have limited design training. I can design a simple circuit if I need to, but I am very well trained on the troubleshooting aspect of many electronics. I obviously don't know them all, and I left the business professionally in 2003, so I have fallen behind as far as the modern shit goes. I am in my zone for the late 70's to early 2000 consumer crap, the stuff I worked on mainly during my 20 years doing this for a living.

@12voltvids3 жыл бұрын
@@Melissa-ve2zw you need to select a power supply that is the same as the original. On the device you are powering will specify what is required. If the device requires 48 volts you need a 48v power supply. That is a odd voltage. That's what equipment designed for telecom runs at as the battery systems are all 48v. Most devices will operate on one of some pretty standard DC voltage. 12, 19, 24, 48. 19 is real common for laptops. The output voltage of the power needs to be the same as the input of the device unless the device is a multi voltage device which will clearly be labeled on the device.

What happens is filter capacitors on the secondary side dry up and the ESR goes up. Under no load the voltage will appear normal, but under load the voltage fluctuates and that causes the rebooting issue.

Power supplies cause more problems than just about anything. If you put it under full load you would see either the voltage drop or high frequency ripple passing through with the DC. Btw I am on my 3rd power supply now, and the second for the cameras. They are the weak link on this system which other than that has been rock solid.

@jeffpream50194 жыл бұрын
Yep. That's the issue. When I use my bench supply it draws ~1.3A and works fine. When powered by the adaptor the current would bounce around .9A and the 12v would drop down. The HDD uses the 12v for the motor and won't spin up if it detects a voltage drop out at the drive. The rest of the lorex device works because the 12v is regulated down to 5v / 3.3v for the other electronics and the power supply would remain above those levels.

I saved you guys the cursing, as I thought my hard drive had failed too, and went to the trouble of swapping it out only to get the same error. Then the light bulb went on and I swapped the power supply. Walla, booted up. So I put the original drive back in and fired up the camera and made the video. I didn't initially shoot the hard drive swap because where the DVR was located it isn't accessible with the camera. It is in a security cabinet, and I actually removed it, and just had it balanced on a little table to shoot. So it may seem that I just "knew" the adapter was bad. Not true, I had worked on this for quite some time before I clued in, because this unit was not that old, I didn't think the adapter would fail that fast. But this isn't the only trouble I have had with this. The fan on the CPU also failed first, and caused it to overheat and start rebooting, so I stuffed a new larger fan from a laptop in there.

God Bless you!! Thank you so much. This was my identical problem and instead of buying another hard drive or a new system tried what you advised and it worked perfectly!!

I have similar problem and system keeps beeping, when i connect monitor in settings it shows no hd disk . So basically what u r showing is we should just change the adapter and it will fix the problem? but if the problem is with adapter then how come system is able to start and just not recognise hdd . please help.

Voltage is falling on power supply. HDD takes more current to spin up, not enough current, voltage drops unit fails. Mine working great with new power supply. New firmware update just pushed last week to fix some known issues when connecting a mix of HD and SD cameras. Now the SD cameras work in color.

12voltvids so i can try any adapter with similar configurations or u suggest some specific adapter i can buy . if u can suggest it will be great. i m layman with electric and electronics , i had given up on my home monitoring after this problem
@12voltvids7 жыл бұрын
Yes it is just a standard 12 volt adapter. You can go higher on the current, but not lower. I put in a 3 amp 12 volt supply from an old cable box.

That's what it was man! Thank you. My system kept rebooting, and it only reboot it when I unplugged the hard drive.
@12voltvids5 жыл бұрын
What happens is current drops due to dried out caps in power supply. Then the voltage starts to drop and the unit reboots.

Very common fault. The power supply for the cameras has also gone south and was replaced a year or so ago. My unit is still going strong. Runs 24/7

Thanks a lot , simple solution for seemingly big problem. changed the adapter and there you go, no more beeping .

sumesh77 The reliability of any electronic devices depends on how cheap the manufacture was when sourcing power adapters. Had it come with a nice linear supply with a big iron transformer it would never fail. But copper costs more than a bunch of capacitors and transistors.

Thank you for this. Changing adapters worked for me. When I disconnected the existing one it was extremely hot and after letting it cool tried it with another device and it didn’t work properly either so that pretty much confirmed a faulty adapter. My internal fan also went bad last year and the unit was overheating and shutting down. After I changed it out, all good. Not sure how much longer this unit is going to last though so thankfully they are much less expensive today than 4 years ago.

Thank you so much my lorex dvr had the same problem. I was about to buy new hard disk which cost about $150-200 luckily I found your video and I had one adaptor in spare so I try using with dvr, it worked the dvr started recording.

The power supply is the weak link on this as is the cooling fan on the processor. When you hear it start to scream, it is time for a new fan. Otherwise the processor will overheat and the unit start rebooting.

Can you do a short video on that power supply so we can see what happened to it? I'm curious.
@12voltvids7 жыл бұрын
Yes I had planned to tear that one down and see what went bad. I already know what it is, and I am sure you do too. Bad Caps.

Brandon C Likely a dead capacitor, by PooCap ltd :)
@brancarr17 жыл бұрын
Most likely. He should be able to find the faulty cap or component and replace and restore it back to working condition and have a spare power supply.

I have boxes of power supplies. At work we swap out PVRs and modems all the time, and the power supplies don't go back to the supplier, because when they refurbish they put a new one in the box, so all the power supplies end up in the bin. I have a couple of boxes of good ones that still work that I saved from the bin.

Hello i have the same problem with my security system no hdd. I want to buy a new power supply does it needs to be the same : input 100-240v 50/60hz 0.6a max output 12v 2.0a?
@12voltvids6 жыл бұрын
The input depends on your country. Most are universal now 100-240. The output just needs to be 12v with minumum 2.0 amps. Make sure polarity of plug is the same and you are good to go. I am using a 12v 2.5 on mine now.

Hey where did u get the new plug????
@12voltvids6 жыл бұрын
It is just a standard 12 volt power brick. Just a standard + pin, - barrel plug. I grabbed a bunch from the recycle bin at work.
