Here is a tip for everyone. Pull those weeds on that sidewalk or knock them down with a weed wacker. THEN use ordinary table salt over top of them. The weed dies completely and it doesn't hurt the surrounding grass. I had weeds growing in my sidewalk. A neighbor lady said she mixes DAWN dish soap and regular table salt in water. She sprays it around her house and around her sidewalks. NO grass grows there and it keeps her from constantly breaking out the weedeater to get rid of them. I just pulled them by hand from my sidewalk cracks and then sprinkled in like a half a teaspoon and then moved on . NO more weeds in the sidewalk or driveway. PLUS it isn't a poison so you don't need gloves or a mask and if you do it for a living you don't need a poison permit.
@74dartman135 жыл бұрын
That's a great tip. I'm going to try it at my place. Thanks!☺
@gomezaddams64705 жыл бұрын
White vinegar works awesome too. Salt can build up and start causing problems with other plants eventually. A little here and there doesn't hurt. But it does have to go someplace it doesn't just dissipate into the air. Vinegar breaks down and a lot of it evaporates and just turns back into an organic substance that isn't a mineral like salt that will kill other plants or get into the water system. It is an alternative in tough spots
@Objective-Observer5 жыл бұрын
@@gomezaddams6470 The acid in household vinegar won't work in areas with hard alkaline water... like my part of Texas. The acid in vinegar neutralizes the mineral content and makes plants grow better. If you have trouble with mineral scale on your plumbing, best to not use household vinegar. My parents were organic growers and tried a variety of insect repellants and weed killers. She discovered 20% acid vinegar in a farm and ranch store and that worked... but it is caustic and you must wear protective gear to prevent it burning your skin. For the recipe above, the Dishwashing soap is killing the plants, while the salt kills the soil.
@FurnitureFan5 жыл бұрын
Great tip. We did this at one house we rented and also mixed the salt with boiling water. It banished weeds for a whole year and a half on the paving. I would only do that on a paved area, but it's quite effective. Also, I found pouring the saturated salt solution on a large series of gaps was so much easier on the wrists than spooning it on one row at a time.

I believe Austin will have a part in the Potters house. Where I live we have a historical home the city runs and takes care of. My friend had her 60th party there. She also had a book signing there. They could have bridal showers, baby showers, the town board could have meetings there, any small family business meetings, etc. Etc. Here we had a Rhubarb fest. They could have a Mary potters day. Use it for a one nite s stay, golf outing, a special couples anniversary , grandparents are in town. And Austin could be part of that, if he so choosed. Good luck Alex in the sale.

You can tell he felt like a real part of that reconstruction, and an understanding of Mary as an artist. I am so happy that you had such a good sale, and hope you rent out the property to someone who stays a long time! You always not only do the right thing, but bend over backwards to do it! The compassion and caring you have for everyone you meet, is palpable. The gentleman that you helped out with half the money you made for selling the Bambi cell, to get him back to Toronto..... that was the most amazing thing. Great auction Alex. This house is perfect for Austin I think. Perhaps thinking outside the back box and working with a financial institution can get this house for Austin. Look for government incentives for young people that buy homes. My 20 year old granddaughter bought her first home 3 years ago, on her own, no co-signers, because she wouldn’t take no as an answer. As a retired realtor, there are many creative, legal ways to do it. Austin just has to give it a try and then figure out how to use the house to make money.
@deniseboldea16245 жыл бұрын
Sorry to hear that the house didn't sell. It doesn't sound like this place is anywhere near any tourist destination so maybe the B&B idea isn't the greatest plan, but there is a different option. Have you heard about the rent to own concept? If your not familiar with the idea, (not sure if the real estate laws are different in Canada), the idea is that there is a clause in the rental contract that states if a renter decides they'd like to buy the home, whatever they were paying in rent goes towards the purchase price. It's a popular option down here since it is basically a try before you buy option. I don't know if you have problems with scrappers or squatters up there, but I would not leave the house unattended for too long. Did you make friends with a neighbor you can leave your phone number with who is willing to keep one eye on the place?

It would always be there if anyone who loved the series wanted to visit and a great thank you to the townspeople who never complained about Alex filming. It's been such a great story and this would be a wonderful ending.

I love this idea:)

Wow! I hope you follow through with that plan. It would be my very first contribution to a crowdfunding campaign. If you are really serious, jump right in and just do it. You have nothing to lose. It may not work out but it's certainly worth a try. If you don't raise enough money to do it, everyone will just be refunded. You may want to have a backup plan in case the town doesn't want to take on the ongoing expenses of upkeep and whatnot. Maybe something like donating it to an artist group or even a local family in need. Don't wait for someone else to take your idea and run with it though. That simply isn't how these things work.
@tereselapree2225 жыл бұрын
That idea has already been tried. If you go back in the series you will find out what happened.
@sobeit33565 жыл бұрын
@@tereselapree222 Not quite the same plan. They tried to crowd fund with a winning person not to donate to the town.
@mustwereallydothis5 жыл бұрын
@@sobeit3356 no this idea is actually quite different. She's talking about us doing a crowdfunding campaign to purchase the house from him. When he tried doing it as a roundabout way to sell the house through crowdfunding and then raffle it off he got fed up with the whiners and decided to scrap the idea. It probably would have worked just fine. He just didn't need that amount of negativity in his life so he scrapped the idea.

Although the potters house didn’t sell, I am glad to see that the smaller items and furniture did get to go to new homes and will hopefully be taken care of! I was sad to see the butchers block and the fridge go, because I felt that it really went with the house, but like you said it’s less you have to move or worry about being 3 or so hours away.

Alex and co., It would have been so easy for Mary's legacy to be forgotten among so much left-over things in her home. As many stories do end totally forgotten! Thank you, and all who assisted you, in helping Mary's story go on! It is one of the saddest thoughts of a person who is near the end of their journey here on earth, to think that they, and all they stood for, would not be remembered in some way. I appreciate the honor Mary has gotten from you and all others. Gloria

Wonderful auction...ty for sharing. I'm glad that you did well on the remaining items. If I could afford it, I would love to own the house. With me being disabled, my income wouldn't cover it sadly. I would treat it with love and pride.

Glad you are managing not to feel too disappointed. You are able to start playing with the new store in the meantime, so hopefully that will keep you feeling happy and excited til this works itself out. Lots of folks love places with interesting histories like this. Even if the town bought it, theres no guarantee they would be able to keep it up. Stay happy and enthusiastic!

I also am a firm believer that everything happens for a reason. Sometimes it is hard to see the roses within the thorns but those roses are still just as beautiful. As an artist myself I would love to purchase this home as an inspiration for my art. Alas I live in Tennessee so it would not be feasible. I hope that someone buys it who appreciates its true value as much as you do Alex.

An empty house might be easier to sell. Most people would want a more modern look and without all the antique decor you might get more interested people who can envision their own belongings in the empty spaces.
@tigermoon445 жыл бұрын
Nope. I had the opposite problem with an empty house and no takers. It wasn't until people saw things in the house, could they imagine their own belongings in the house.
@Vicki19305 жыл бұрын
An empty house is not easier to sell, that’s why home staging is a growth industry.
@VTL775 жыл бұрын
I agree staging helps, but I think the antique look is a very niche market and might be hindering more than just having it empty.
@robertsitch14155 жыл бұрын
It is usually easier to get a sense of scale with Some furniture in the room. Hoarder level clutter generally repulses people. A lot of the reason I feel the house is not selling is that the real estate market in Central Alberta softened when the oil boom ended. There was a house in Brantford, Ontario that sold above asking price despite being full of clown art. Not everyone who wants period furniture would also want old appliances though.
@gomezaddams64705 жыл бұрын
I can't imagine that house with modern anything in it. That's the point of buying an antique house is to keep it somewhat proper. As far as decor. Anything that needed to be modern were hidden things like wiring and Plumbing. If people want a modern house so by a modern house I think it has much more to do with the area it's in pain and the fact that it's far away from bigger cities you just have your own little town there. And it's very cold in the winter so it's like a living in Fargo. Obviously the house is suited for somebody. Every house has it's people or person. If somebody wants to turn it modern I hope the house stops them and haunts them. It's an old house that deserves somewhat relatively time. Belongings. My belongings would fit right in it. When he was first auctioning the house he said that the stuff is in the house you can do anything you want with it. That fridge would have never left! I grew up with one like that so I love it. Plus with the yard I have such a huge Garden most of my Foods picked fresh anyway until winter comes and then everything has been dried so I have lots of low temperature technically raw dried food to eat. It would have been a good place for having neighbor so close. I forget if it has a basement I don't think it does maybe I definitely need space for food things and some sort of root cellar. Being vegan for 55 years before it was a word I believe or if it was I didn't know it. I've learned to make much food by fermenting drying and sprouting. It keeps you extremely healthy and looking about 20 years younger than you are. I don't know what this has to do with the house other than it would be a shame to put modern things in it other than just a little bit of personal things it would look ridiculous actually. Okay I'm talking after having fallen asleep. It's like drunk dialing only just tired and I don't even remember what I write and often and embarrassed later. Right now the phone isn't working well so who knows what it says
