In oct 2020 I did the timing chain on my S4 B8 (manual gearbox). The cheapest (in a reputable repair shop) I could find around Munich area was around 6200€. Giving the opportunity, I also replaced the clutch. Final costs were around 7000€ (timing chain + clutch) incl. 1 year warranty for parts and labour. The supercharged B8/B8.5 will become very sought after. PS: next time when working on a B8/B8.5 do a supercharger oil change too. there are only a few ml of oil, but nobody really thinks of it.

@@VAGTechnic nice to hear that people over there do care about their cars and do maintain them. around here, labour costs are huge, and therefore owners ditch the cars the moment the used car warranty expires, be it a boring daily driver or something a bit more special. that's why many cars on the streets are not older than 8-10 years. also most of the repairs being done are more or less in the area of replacing various easily accessible and common parts, and less in the one of deep maintenance.

No way! I thought it was only me! I just went through the exact same issue. We ripped the whole engine apart and could not find anything wrong that would be making such a loud knock like sound, but a fast knock. The only thing that was different in my situation is we had zero codes to go off of. We did notices pieces of guides were missing. Eventually we thought of it and guessed it must be that piece stuck in the crank. Mine is a 2014 S4 with 98,000 hard, stretched oil changed, miles. Wish I could put a photo of the guide piece that was stuck. Formed a perfect spacer between two of the teeth on the crank gear.

But, my car has been running a lot more boost than stock (what I think is a lot anyways) and at 202,000 miles (300+k kilometers) I'd like to open it up to check on the chains and the piston rings. Let's prevent catastrophe before it happens kind of thing. However, if I'm going to pull it out just to check it I might at well rebuild it fully as the engine and tranny have never been opened up before. Either way awesome video, was interesting to see someone actually record it and do the full job instead of reddit claim they've put one together or made some ridiculous amount of power

Few questions. So I’m doing the same repair on my B8 s4 changing the piston rings and also all new timing components. Everything else is also new pcv, water pump, thermostat, new connecting rod bolts etc. Once I get the pistons back into the block which way should they be positioned as in firing order is there a certain piston that needs to be up? Also, how do you know which ways to set the camshafts when you place them back into the cylinder heads so that the pistons don’t hit the valves?
@VAGTechnic3 жыл бұрын
Hi, You will need timing tools . Bridge bracket between intake and exhaust camshaft . Crank have locking pin . You can only lock it in one position . When you finished with your bottom end lock it straight away . Than you can put your cylinder heads on . Valves are still closed so they will not hit the pistons on installation . Once you putting your cams in ideal have the screw together already with the tool. Camshaft gears have markings as you can see in the video that have to be on place ! Once you remove the pin from tensioners you can right the main bolts for camshaft. Once everything is tight always turn the engine slowly few times. If you lock the crank again after few turns your timing tools should go on easily . If not ! You have to do it again .

Absolutely great video! I just pulled the engine off my 11 S4. Suspecting bent piston rod due to the water locked engine, because for the most part crank rotates freely, but there is about 20 degrees of full circle when I need a breaker bar to rotate it. So most likely the rod is in contact with something. Never took an engine apart (especially this kind of), so looks like this one will be a good candidate for self education :) Do you think pulling one of the heads (where I assume bad rod is) is enough to replace it? Assuming piston is fine - is it OK to reuse it with a new rod (assuming there is no additional damage to the engine besides the bent rod)? Car is at about 140k miles now, but the sticker on the cam gears cover indicates it was replaced in 2014 (don't know why). Also are the 4 original bolts strong enough to mount the engine on the engine stand? Looks like the original bolts weight nothing - they are very light and I'm scared to put all the weight of the engine on those :D
