That's an incredibly good price mate. £2650 for an engine-out fix and including parts is fantastic. Here in the US they'd probably quote you closer to $4000. And if they had to replace an extra bolt, another $50.

Thank you so much for posting these timing chain videos - so many forums and knowledge bases miss this and claim the engines are reliable except for PCV / Waterpump / Thermostat. Having to drop the engine just like the B6/7 is such a turn off from these cars. Shame they’ve got to be this way since I love mine as I’m sure most of the owners do. Wouldn’t have bought if I’d known.

Hey guys, great video. I did this and much more on my 4.2fsi which has the same chain setup. And my best hint is, that i ordered my chains from a German supplier called Febi Bilstein, which is known for cheaper parts. In this case tho they are reselling the genuine Audi parts ( chains and oil pump tensioner from IWIS, and chain guides from INA ) for way less money. I paid 280€ for the whole set of chains and tensioners ( plus 10€ for the small top guides from Audi as they are not included in the set ) and they actually have IWIS and INA markings on it. In total for all parts (incl. fluids, gaskets, etc.) and new engine mounts as they were done i paid 1200€ for the whole job including a rental engine lift as i dont have nice things. Engine runs fine for 3000km now

How is it these chains don't last the engine life. Never had to change chains on my cars in the past ?
@JJ-pm1zv
@JJ-pm1zv 9 ай бұрын
@@roysargood8750 depending on what cars you have. Here Audi uses simplex chains but some manufacturers have upgraded to stronger duplex chains like mercedes. The chains are worn in the inner bolts every time they turn around a gear as that's where the friction is. That wear is much worse if you do your oil changes too few. Normally the chains go too long after ~230.000km. With regular oil changes this extends up to 350.000 but can also happen with 180.000. I mean, some engines don't even live that long at all, and compared to changing the timing belt every 80.000 it's not that bad even considering the costs. Newest cars tho have the worst setup of them all, which is a wet driven timing belt, stay away from those.

Back when I worked at an Audi dealership, we had a car in where we diagnosed a worn chain (2.4 FSI). Turned out the (former) owner had sent it over the border to get it fixed a year prior, because the Audi shop there did it cheaper. This shop changed the guides and tensioners, but left the original worn chain in. That, and not a single gasket replaced. Just RTV all over the place. No wonder they were cheaper.

Great video! I'm confused about the tightening the camshaft sprocket bolts. Everywhere it is noted, that you need to use a counter-force tool when tightening the bolts to avoid the breakage of camshafts, since camshaft locking brackets (and bolts) are not designed to withstand 80nm +90 degrees torque, but I didn't see you do it on that video.

Had an 2013 Audi s4 in dubai stage 2 revo tuned with supercharger pulley and stronic transmission, bought it 18months old with just 49k km, loved that car and put 100k on it in 3yrs. So rapid and smooth absolute joy to own, only broke down once near to my apartment underground car park, managed to limp it inside (was overheating) thermostat stuck shut a common issue apparently . Replaced that in the car park at night which was 95% humidity and 42oC almost got heat stroke lol. Using super unleaded and oil change every 10k km with mobil 1 0w/40 and flushed every time that engine was sweet as a nut when I sold it to the guy who bought my 2011 stage 2+ APR tuned Golf R which he px the golf r back to me for the Audi s4.

Hi, thank you for this great video. Could I ask a question about the gasket? you are moving at 10:50 minutes the big chain cover. I see you have applied glue to all sides of the cover. so far so good. But this cover is going to the cylinder head both sides, where the gasket peeks out. so, this gasket (the cylinder head gasket) isn’t glued normally. the question is, is it right this way, that from the top side this gasket (to the cylinder head) is no glue, and from the bottom side to the cover, it is glued? it will be sealed the? just because strictly speaking, the cylinder head gasket on the short piece will be used..

Awesome indept video! I finaly know what my garage did with my car a year ago :) Last year I had the timing chain replaced of my 2009 A4 TFSI (B8) and the total cost where just a shade above 1000 pounds (1280 euro) here in Holland (The Netherlands). I was pleasantly suprised since dealerships in Amsterdam en Den Haag quoted me alot more. The mechanic that serviced my car even showed me hands on the difference where the old chain could be folded in half easily en the new chain couldn't. Indicating that the old chain was totaly worn out hence giving a fault code about camshaft alignment or something like that. They even replaced a second chain powering the oilpump, or so they told me.

As a retired Audi tech from a Audi dealership I wondered why they would engineer a engine with valve train chains at rear of engine. A possible maintenance issue. Insane. Definitely a money pit. Way over engineered an the consumer gets it up the butt in the end. I'll stick with my Acura 3.5 just basic maintenance an a T-belt every 100k or so.

Well I had to have special tools just to do an oil change and take 20 screws off on my 2015 Q5. Definitely a money pit. Unfortunately, ppl must have lots of it or sell them prior before they fall endure these massive expenses. Cars with 40-60K Miles on them needing $5K work is insane and you still making payments. I bought over 100K miles and now I'm seeing the issues. Lucky me!

@BremboBlake
@BremboBlake 2 жыл бұрын
@@carstenrubner520 No, not every car has direct injection. Look your engine up online to see if it does. I only plan on replacing the upper tensioner(s) in Bank 2 (no codes yet, but I have clicking) and if I do in car, do I have to lock the crank or can I just lock the cams? Great Video guide ! In near future i will try to attempt that service myself , due to noisy cold start from left Tensioner but not as bad as in your video . Good tip with pushing in flaps when putting them back , i made that mistake once and again had to take off SC , I wish i had seen that video earlier :) Also your price for that job is very competitive and some of my local garages quote me a bit more . Thx for Video

how were you able to determine if it was bank 2 or 1 tensioner? I heard bank 2 driver side is usually the one to fail, but I'm unsure without replacing both, which I would do if they didn't make them so hard to get to in car.

@shifty277

I think these guys say between 80k and 120k - it can be checked the stretch with live data when a device is plugged into the OBD2 port. It depends on how the engine has been treated/serviced that decides this - if you own the car from new and treat it well (for example not thrashing an engine in the winter within 20 seconds of it being turned on without allowing it to get to 90 degrees)

Had a Nissan Maxima Mk2 with a beautiful 3.0L V6 motor, bought around 1995. Sold it to a friend of mine 6 years later with 115k kms on the clock, all that had been done is regular oil changes. He drove it for 10 years and sold it with 454k kms on the odo, no cam chain changed and was still able to lay rubber for the guy that bought it. It would appear that the new, improved engines are not improved, especially not from VAG.

Nicely done! RTV on gaskets. NO!! I use a touch of Dow 111 Molycote on rubber gaskets; i.e., water pump gaskets, intake runner gaskets, or carefully on Fuel injection seals, etc. It is a great silicone grease that keeps the gasket in place and soft for years. Things just slide together more easily using it I feel. It is good up to 200C I think. Anyhow, maybe you guys know about it. Thanks for sharing. About to pull a B7 3.2 engine to do this very job soon. Do you prefer to drop the subframe/engine/trans out as one unit? Especially having a lift? Thanks boys.

I have the same noise as in this video. Didn't think it was timing chain related as it sounds cyclical like something is on a duty cycle. I would have thought the timing chain would be more constant. I was thinking it was the vacuum pump as the noise is loudest in the middle of the engine - not the back

Hi Ed, Vacuum pump is attached on the passenger cylinder head from the front . What you might hear ticking in the middle are the vacuum solenoids :)

Hey, I took a broken down Panamera Hybrid which has the same engine and sucked in water and hydrolocked the engine. I've taken the spark plugs out and turned the engine but can't turn it 360° it's turns maybe half way and stops. I'm wondering if you've come across anything like this and how bad was the damage. @@jonmartinstuberg2039i would say there is no way to change those chains in situ as they are at the back of the engine/gearbox side. You need to separate tge gearbox from the engine to get to them.
