For too long, due to lack of technology ... there was a giant lack of accountability, and we had good ol' boys running around doing what they want. This idea of wielding power over others with impunity attracted WAY too many of the wrong type of people to this profession, and some took out their angst on others, and some wielded their power for pure pleasure while only a few were actually doing the job for the right reasons. And many of THEM would end up being corrupted by the rest leaving even fewer. NOW... finally there is ultimate accountability with all actions being recorded and more and more of these jerks realizing they can't get away with what they want. Also, newcomers are coming into it with the realization that they won't be able to abuse their power, so more and more of the RIGHT type should be entering the force now, and hopefully the bad ones exit quickly. Imagine if that was the norm for everyone else. Working at a grocery store and a customer irritates you so you go up and punch them in the face. You get a few weeks of paid vacation while your coworkers that also don't like certain customers "investigate" your actions only to say the use of force was justified and there was no wrong doing. Spot-on assessment! An independent nationwide complaint organization with zero ties to any law enforcement agency should be created, as well as the creation of an independent organization to which all officer and patrol vehicle camera video is automatically uploaded to without being able to be accessed by individual agencies so they cannot alter or delete the recordings, which unfortunately does happen in some situations. More independent oversight of such things means a potentially more just assessment of the situations that arise.

While these guys intentionally exacerbated the situation and may even seem like the “bad guys” at first glance - it’s important to remember that the officers are held to professional standards and obligations of civil duty, and citizens are not. Citizens have a right to be - frankly, horribly rude to each other. I can’t stand people like this, which is why I’d never be a police officer. If dealing with rude people isn’t your strength, it’s probably best to avoid jobs involving customer service and/or police work.

That might be a bad cop, but those auditors get an F also. They came out the gate immediately trying to escalate as much as possible, before the cops even said or did anything. I don't want auditors to act that way any more than I want cops to act that way.

Knowing they were being filmed, *3 of the department's 17 officers deployed the blue shield to protect their own.* Their terminology alone, never mind their conduct, indicates they don't know the basics of performing a stop (a common police task) making it reasonable to question if they are qualified for their position, or they don't care. Unless this is a coincidence, this is a corrupt department, long past needing to be cleaned up.

The problem with auditors like this is that they are trying to incite escalation. That’s why they were immediately aggressive, extremely rude etc. The officer at first only asked what’s going on. These clowns started flying off the handle immediately. The cop is in the wrong for sure but this is what the auditors are looking for. Push buttons on purpose and are extremely aggressive.

Morabito is an example of why 1) every cop at every level (local, county, state, federal) should be required to wear an "always on" body camera when on duty and 2) the laws should be rewritten so that the CIVILIAN is presumed to be telling the truth in any dispute of fact where the officer CANNOT (or will not) provide video of the interaction.
@Gaivs
@Gaivs 2 жыл бұрын
It's really stupid (but suggestive) that not knowing the law is not a valid excuse for breaking the law, but then you have wildly different (and often hidden) rules and policies the police can enforce at will... It is now law that online consent forms / terms and conditions have to be concise and readable for regular people, why on earth doesn't this apply to the laws around us when this can have (and often has) enormous, life changing consequences for regular citizens.

They still turn off the cameras and claim they didn't know how they got turned off. Or claim that the camera malfunctioned. Or that, in the heat of the moment, they forgot to turn it on. And, of course, a lot of incriminating video is tampered with back at the station.
