I’m sure somebody already write this exact comment but No BS beauty did a review on this where she provided information from Pub Med which to my understanding is a site of publications of scientific findings that have been verified. She shares that she had the exact same question as you as to how this sunscreen has the same percentage of mineral sunscreen ingredients as other sunscreens with 30 spf as opposed to 50 and her research on Pub Med revealed that an algae used in this particular formulation acts as a natural filter that reinforces the level of protection given from this sunscreen. Like I said I am sure I am the 30th person to write this but just Incase it was missed, I am sharing what I learned from No BS video although I did not follow up on pub med to verify what she shared with us viewers but she did provide a link to do so.

Just wondering if anyone ever looked more into how it achieves an SPF rating of 50 with its relatively low zinc oxide percentage? Even though the color is not quite perfect, this is the only affordable sunscreen that doesn't make me look like a pasty greaseball at the end of the day! I'm wondering, even if it is so cost effective and wears nicely, if I should repurchase. Especially now learning A) they're not even Australian! lol, B) they originally listed the ingredients alphabetically instead of by relative amount, and C) the low percentage of zinc oxide vs high SPF rating.

How much zinc does it have
@_empty_49452 жыл бұрын
I’m pretty late lol but I can help answer this. Despite the filters being a low percentage, there are other ingredients in the sunscreen that help reflect light which contributes to the high spf. I believe dr dray has a video about this explaining it much better than me!

@Anna.Maria.B.4 жыл бұрын
My main issue with this sunscreen is that it is super drying. I cannot wear it on its own. I usually put a regular 20% zinc oxide SPF50 sunscreen on my face first (tend to be oily/greasy, in addition to leaving a white cast), and then I put the tinted Australian Gold sunscreen on top. It has a mattifying effect. On its own, it makes me look orange, but the layered combination suits me (that said I'm on the paler side, so I don't know if I've actually helped anyone, I just felt like commenting). Your sunscreen reviews are great - very detailed. Also, other youtubers tend to only show how sunscreen looks on their hand instead of on their face, so thank you :)
4 жыл бұрын
You know, that hack actually makes TONS of sense! I feel like I'll use this exactly how you mentioned, to mattify and control shine under makeup over a more moisturizing, rich formula. I've been told a few times now that the medium tint shade of the BB cream version of this is the exact same formula and texture and the undertone is more suited to my skin color, so imma get that one and see. And thank you! I love sunscreen and it's such a misunderstood yet growing sector of skincare youtube, so sharing knowledge, info, and reviews is really important to me, and I don't beat around the bush. I need my sunscreens to do very specific things for me, so I will put them through the RINGER.
@edzyutuc40463 жыл бұрын
Have you found any research backing up their spf rating and PPD 19 rating? Or have they disclosed further explanation regarding this? Having only 4% zinc oxide i believe is not enough. Same concern for me. I’m focused more on combatting UVA than UVB since I’m always indoors. PLUS I LOVE YOUR CHANNEL
@marygomez15303 жыл бұрын
Oh God, I've been browsing through the comments for the past half hour looking for some info on this exact issue. I have the same question, because I too stay as far away from the sun as I can, but UVA rays are a really bad bitch and I'm concerned about the PPD rating. I love this sunscreen, but I need to make sure it works for what I need.

I think you should definitely try the version that is in the shade medium to tan! I know it says that it is a bb cream on the front but I have used both and the "bb cream" version is just as opaque as the original formula. The medium-tan version is much more yellow/ orange colored without much of a pink undertone. Too dark for me but I think it would look lovely on you. Anyways, love your videos

The percentage for zinc oxide is irrelevant, it is dependent on the particle size and quality of the zinc. Otherwise baby powder would have a SPF. If it says SPF 50 then its worth that value.
4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for clarifying! I'd done some research that concluded the same thing (and also brought up the point that some asian sunscreens with less white cast potentially using more micronized zinc in their formulations). Plus, Australian Gold is very transparent with their FDA UV testing on their sight so I'm not going to doubt them. That baby powder tea is funny though. Thanks!

I’ve been watching hours and hours and hours of sunscreen reviews and yours are absolutely the best. Thank you for your service. Can you incorporate into your future videos the concentrations of the ingredients, specifically zinc oxide since that’s the only effective UVA filter. From what I understand, the spf claims on bottles are not accurate and the broad spectrum claims can be a huge stretch even for mineral sunscreens. I’m looking for a minimum of 15% zinc oxide that is not drying and doesn’t leave a white cast
4 жыл бұрын
Of course! I've started incorporating more of that kind of info into my more recent reviews if I can get the information. What's interesting, and I've learned in school (I'm in a MSc Cosmetic Sciences program) as we've started formulation science, is that while the percentage of the filters is important for UV protection, a lot more goes into a formulation to determine protection levels. Things like antioxidants and other formulation components, as well as the overall vehicle, particle size, and how the filters are treated also have a huge say in the final protection values. I'm in agreement with you that broad spectrum is a generous term for Zinc, although it does cover into the UVA 1 part of the spectrum, although not as effectively as it's chemical counterparts, and concentration also plays a big role in that as well. I've seen a lot of people online discussing that tid bit about SPF advertising not being accurate and I have my opinions around that, but I lean on the side of trusting the packaging since a lot of countries have strict regulations around sunscreen formulation, and I just make sure my application is GENEROUS. Again, people see sunscreens haveing single digit percentages of zinc and titanium and assume the SPF claims are bogus, but there's a lot that plays a role in the final product. Plus, brands like Australian Gold are very transparent with their UV testing results, and you can find them on their website! My favorite mineral sunscreens I've tried that are more moisturizing are definitely the Cocokind one, and the Axis-Y sunscreen. I got a review of Cocokind up already, the other one should be up by next week!
@thestormlscoming4 жыл бұрын
@ thank you for taking the time to write this up! Yea I actually just received my cocokind sunscreen today which I ordered after seeing your video. I ordered Kinship as well. I’m definitely interested in trying some of the European or Japanese sunscreens with the enhanced UVA filters, so that’s step two haha. I’m not sure which chemical I have issues with in American sunscreens, but they all sting my eyes, whether it’s immediately when applying or a bit later in the day as the product moves around. I haven’t watched all of your chemical videos yet but If that’s something you can talk about, that’d be super appreciated. I heard about antioxidants and other formulations boosting up the spf and UVB protection, but does anything boost up the UVA1 protection other than zinc oxide and a handful of non-fda approved chemical filters? I have lupus so definitely need to be extra cautious with sun protection, so just looking for the best options. That’s super awesome you’re studying this now. I wish I went to school for cosmetic chemistry instead of accounting ahah. Way more interesting and useful

My only beef with that would be the sponge absorbing excess product, or reducing the amount of coverage, but I DOOOO love a BB air cushion puff. I didn't insert it in, but I did an air puff for day 3 and 4 of application. The issue is this sunscreen is just too damn opaque! Some other commenters were saying that the BB cream version is literally the same opacity as this version. That beauty blender trick works wonders for reapplication though.

It's like you read my mind! I was thinking about this sunscreen when I was watching your Versed review because I have this sunscreen and enjoy it quite a lot, but it's mostly because of the tone of it. I have cool-toned undertone to my skin, and even my mom who has more neutral undertone likes it but I won't deny that the cast of it is quite strong on a person with any other undertone. This product acts like a primer (since it has silicones) and a tone-corrector in one for me.
4 жыл бұрын
I'd been curious for so long so I'm happy I finally got around to trying it! I don't hate it is the thing, and some other peeps in the comments have told me that the medium shade of the BB cream version (which apparently has about the same opacity as this one) is more my undertone, so I think I'm going to grab it. I loved this under makeup, and the texture of this on the skin was honestly beautiful, so with the right color, this will be a staple for summer since it kept me so matte and wore so nicely under makeup.
@tanjhdois8372 жыл бұрын
I have tried so many mineral sunscreens in the USA and they all such. Not just because of my olive skin and everything oxidizing orange even to tinted ones. But the protection isn’t there for me. I switched to Japanese sunscreens with high PA ratings and finally my skin doesn’t burn. I honestly think American sunscreens don’t have the amount of spf listed on the tag. Beauty products can claim anything and not have to prove it. For example maybeline bb cream spf 30 titanium dioxide. The label list spf 30 mineral. But as soon as I looked at the back I see titanium dioxide listed last and it stated may or may not contain titanium dioxide. USA sucks for sunscreens
@reissval Жыл бұрын
I think what is tripping you up about the percentages of the zinc & titanium oxides is that those are the ingredient percentages and not the overall product percentages (which companies aren't required to report). If product A has 20% zinc oxide in it, but only puts a small of that ingredient in their sunscreen, the overall percentage in the product is small. Product B could have a 5% zinc oxide as an ingredient, but they use a lot of it in their sunscreen and end up with a higher overall concentration in their product, thus a higher SPF. In a way, a lot of the products advertising their higher zinc oxide percentage is misleading because they don't tell you how much of that 20% zinc oxide makes it into the product.

I just bought this, I'm very fair and was hoping this would act as a kind of color correction type product for me as I don't wear makeup but I didn't notice it accentuating my fine lines under my eyes, will have to pay more attention. I'm also, I believe, cool undertoned but I don't have any pictures wearing this. I had the devil of a time getting it off though, are you double cleansing (I'm sure) and if so, what are you using? I've never bought an oil cleanser before and so we have some grapeseed oil and I've used that the last couple times I wore this sunscreen and it has worked pretty well.
4 жыл бұрын
Tbh, I wore makeup AND set my undereyes with some powder the day that I was like "damn my fine lines are PRESENT today", so the issue was exacerbating how matte and dry my skin was. Yes I do double cleanse, and you got to with this one since it is supposed to be water resistant. There's a lot of things that could work. My personal go to is the Heimish All Clean Balm, but there's a few different kinds of cleansing balms. Another popular cleansing OIL is the DHC Cleansing Oil, although my boyfriend finds it to be too rich. Even something like a micellar water could work too!

When it comes to physical mineral sunscreens, the % don't mean the same as chemical spf's. It has more to do with individual micron size of the minerals. To achieve an spf 50 with large micron size minerals, it would have at least 20% minerals. If the micron size is smaller (still non-nano), it can be achieved with much lower %'s. If you have ever tried an spf 50 or even 30 that goes on like thick white paste and a ghostly whitecast that you can't cover up - that is 20+% mineral and very LARGE particle sized minerals. Basically, the smaller the mineral particle size, the lower the % is needed to achieve a high spf and less of a whitecast. The larger the mineral particle size, the higher % is needed to achieve a higher spf and you can often expect a whitecast. Almost ALL are now non-nano so you don't have to really worry about that. I have tried over 30 and only ever owned 1 nano spf.
@Snuzzled3 жыл бұрын
@@krisr3612 it is important though to remember that particle size effects which parts of the uv spectrum the zinc is most effective against. A good sunscreen with broad protection will have a mixture of particle sizes to ensure they have a better range of protection

I’ve tried this in the past and it was soo dry for me and wrong undertone. I think what I had seen was that the other colors you were referring to are new colors for this same sunscreen. So that might be why there are not many reviews, but I think it’s supposed to be the same as this just expanded shades. Since this didn’t work for me when I first tried it though I’m not 100% on that as I don’t stay up to date on it (since my dry skin won’t be rebuying).

Yeah, I understand where you're coming from. I kinda want to buy the new colors and see what they look like, but tbh I won't be using this as a full fledged face sunscreen, rather has another layer or sheer BB cream over another sunscreen that's more hydrating and better for my skin color that this could mattify.

I have a really oily t-zone (combination skin), but I’m desperate about wanting a mineral sunscreen that leaves an almost no-to-minimal white cast 😅 I’ve been looking at tinted ones and I think that’s what I’m gonna have to go for. I also don’t wear makeup, so that isn’t a concern for me ☺️ I’m currently using a sunscreen that does the job, but it’s a bit drying and has a lot of fragrance... so idk :(

Tinted sunscreen - good for a lily white man like me?
4 жыл бұрын
Yes yes! Tbh you're not that fair, and the white cast for mineral sunscreens (which need to be tinted most times since the UV filters for mineral sunscreens are literally white pigments. Titanium Dioxide is literally the titanium white pigment in white paint) can be bad on anyone, so tinting it makes it a lot more pleasant and aesthetically pleasing to wear. What it then comes down to is finding a tinted shade that won't look too orange on you, but you can generally find formulas and tints that are very forgiving since they aren't too opaque and high coverage. Organic/chemical filters don't have that issue though, and that's more what I exclusively use.

She was super interested in trying it though, so I texted her the details so she could pick some up here and bring it back with her to Australia 🦘

Friend! That sunscreen looks terrible. Maybe it would work as a primer. I thought eucalyptus was considered an irritating compound for skin? Happy Pride! Super happy about not getting fired for existing in the world now.

Hey Hey! Honestly that's how imma use it because it kept me MATTE and it sat beautifully under makeup, so i'll target it specifically in my t zone. They have a medium shade in their BB cream which is apparently much more my undertone, and the formula appears to be the same as this sunscreen, so I might give it a try. And it definitely can be. I'm not sure on the extent of it necessarily, but it is a botanical extract (another reviewer made the distinction of saying it was the extract, not the oil, so idk how much of a difference that might make) and there's definitely a higher risk of irritation and reaction to that as a result. And Happy Pride!!!

I like your videos 😊😁 wish I could see tinted spfs on many different shades even one like mine because I have olive skintone and it's hard to match it with the pinky/peach undertones some tinted spfs have. 😭 My last tinted spf was so dark and peachy it looked like my face wasn't matching my neck 😂 universal tinted my butt 🍑

Yeah, I don't get where these brands get their definitions of 'universal' from, but 99.9% of the time they're WRONG. I'm glad you enjoyed my content and found it useful!
