hands down the best reviewer of cars for potential buyers. This reviewer actually compares all the possible options and equipments, which is so confusing in modern cars givens so many choices for engine, exhaust, suspension, wheels, seats etc.

This is the best car review I have ever seen. The 718 Boxster is a real masterpiece just like every other Porsche. I literally love everything on it and I can't wait to get mine. It should arrive in September. I put the deposit for it the very next day after watching this review. Thank you Thomas!

Autogefühl - Hello Thomas! This is just to let you know that I just traded in my beloved 718 Boxster for a Carrera 4S. I had a great time driving my 718 for 2.5 years but I decided to upgrade. 911 is absolutely the best sports car ever made and now I can’t describe how happy I am. I wish I can take it with me to my bedroom every night, ha-ha. If you made a KZbin video of 2017 or later Carrera 911 4S I would love to watch it.

Hi again, I am torn between the S and the 2.0. I will get the sound package but will never be on a track and it will be my daily driver. Some reviews say from a standing stop there is turbo lag in the 2.0 whereas the S has a lot of go. For USD $10k or so is the S worth it along with lower gas mileage? Thanks.

A lot of purists will dislike what I'm about to say.... I think the new Boxer 4 with turbocharging is the best engine for this car. The 718 has a better weight distribution, power comes on very low in rpms, shifting the transmission is reduced and you have more space in the rear trunk. I doubt the fuel economy will be any different in the real world. The exhaust sound is very good and Porsche has tuned it well. Being a best seller, I think the 718 will have excellent reliability and be a classic 20 years from now.
@metalmikebot
@metalmikebot 8 жыл бұрын
+gbriank1 I totally agree. It's a give and take with turbocharging. Like Thomas says in the review, with NA engines you generally have to wait until the engine is revved up pretty high to get the full power delivery. And anyone who's driven a BRZ/FR-S can attest that NA engines can have torque dips that 'feel' a bit like turbo lag. Sounds like this engine is super responsive.

+Mike Doolittle go to a dealer and drive a 981 there is no issues with power and its way more fun to keep it revving up high blasting through the gears on full 6 cylinder song!

How do you know it's 'more fun'? Have you driven the 718?
@Ashgardiner
@Ashgardiner 8 жыл бұрын
+Mike Doolittle Yes i took a 718S Boxter out last weekend when mine was in for a service. Acceleration didn't feel significantly faster, but then again they are both blisteringly fast. I think you would only really notice in a drag race. Handling didn't feel as good as mine, but my car is a Cayman S which are known to bee sharper than a Boxter S, Mine also has PDK, torque vectoring, PASM and adaptive steering. The Boxter only had pdk so it was an unfair comparison. I would say it was pretty close but nothing groundbreakingly different, to be honest they feel pretty similar to drive although the pasm is much better over bumps in normal road than conventional suspension. Its very hard to make a car that is pretty much perfect much better when it comes to the handling both are superb to drive and i think anyone would be very happy with either. The 718 did feel a little cheaper than my car i really didn't like the dash vents, but then it didn't have all the options and leather bits like mine so its not quite a like for like comparison, little things like manual seats was a level i didn't realize Porsche could drop down to! Overall it was no better or worse to drive than my 981 it just didn't evoke the same emotional connection as my 981 and that was 100% due to the sound and way the power was delivered, it was fast it just wasn't an event like it is in the 6 cylinder cars.

I'll wait to test drive one before ordering, but based on your review I'm confident this will be my 5th Boxster S.... and first 718. I cannot imagine needing more from a car. The Boxster S really is almost perfect if you don't need 4 seats.

Autogefühl I do not understand how anyone could ever buy any Porsche without the full leather interior. That just add so much special feeling to the interior, also with the accented stitching. I really like alcantara but unless it's a GTS you can't combine the alcantara seats and leather dashboard. Edit: I'm an idiot, you can, but it's a individual option.

I recently found this channel, and I’m very impressed with the reviews. I am a current owner of a WRX with twin turbo, and I can say with certainty that this does not sound like a Subaru. I have driven a 2010 GT3 and was blown away by the intoxicating sound of the flat 6, so I understand the disappointment with the loss of the exhaust note. I am a previous owner of a 1973 914 with the 2.0 liter, 4 cylinder engine. The 914 weighed approximately 2000 pounds and the engine produced only 95 hp. I can truly say that the mid engine, low weight, relatively low hp Porsche, was a blast to drive (former owner of a Boss 302 Mustang). Turbo 4 cylinder engines are here to stay for various reasons (performance and emissions) and whether they reduce the number of sales of the 718, is yet to be seen...thank you for these great review.

Dear Joseph, if Porsche is happy with the sound of the engine, why would they bother to install two speakers (one behind each seat) just to play electronically "enhanced" engine sounds (I couldn't find out if they are recorded or amplified). Why would Porsche add weight to a sports car just to cheat the sound you hear in the cabin? Is this in accordance with their heritage? Why you can't get this information in any KZbin review?? Is Porsche paying the reviewers not to disclose this?
@jms241965
@jms241965 6 жыл бұрын
I need to take a ride to the dealership to see these speakers...if Porsche were really concerned with the sound they would have kept the flat 6...the increased horsepower and performance is long overdue...we will see what the sales numbers are for the 718.

Having driven both 718 S 's (with and without sport exhaust), I actually prefer the standard exhaust. The reason is that, although when PSE is on, yes it is a little louder at high rpms, it is also more quiet than the standard exhaust at lower rpms. You still get the gargles and pops without PSE. I simply found standard exhaust to be the more pleasing overall driving experience. I make a similar analogy to the standard suspension versus PASM. With PASM, when switched off, the suspension is softer than standard, and when on, it's harder. PASM equipped cars miss entirely the perfect, to my sense, standard suspension. Waiting delivery on my Boxster S, standard suspension and exhaust.

Seems like a nice car to have if you're looking for a second car and live in a country that has a climate to actually allow you to drive this. As for the sound, I liked the 2.5 because of the lower sound, the 2 definitely improved with the exhaust button on, though I imagine the boxter S sounding even better with that same option enabled. again, great video!

An excellent review Thomas. Most of the commenters on all of the 718 Boxster reviews have negative comments on the exhaust note, but until you hear it with your own ears in the 718 Boxster S with optional Sport Exhaust, you have not heard the best there is for the 718 platform. It is too bad that Thomas didn't have the S with the Sport Chrono and Sport Exhaust for this review. For a fair comparison, I went to a dealer and drove a 2016 Boxster GTS and a new 718 S with Sport Exhaust, back to back. The 718 with Sport Chrono and Sport Exhaust delivers that wonderful torque instantaneously at all times, has superb handling, and a decent throaty sounding exhaust note with somewhat less crackling than the GTS on downshifts. It's not equivalent sounding to the GTS by any means, but not anywhere near as horribly sounding as the official Porsche video on the 718's which was poorly mic'd for exhaust note...they do not sound at all like a Subaru with a "tinny" exhaust pipe. That was a disservice to the car and to Porsche who have done quite a respectable job on the new 718.

As much this is the best analysis of the new porsche 718 I've seen. Congratulations on your analysis really sample all aspects of the car. My comment is I would buy a boxter GTS few months ago until I saw that the new model coming soon, I wait the decision for that reason. What I dont know is that not the GTS version of this model. I know I'm not the only customer who wants him with the GTS kit. Anyway I really enjoy your video ! Great Job !

+davichin27 thanks !! GTS kit will follow later, they always bring that later for their models, I expect that by mid of next year. GTS packs usually rock as they have the alcantara options. Though for the 718 Boxster you can already get leather alternative with basic seat, thats rare with porsche

Thanks Thomas, I'm sitting at home in Canada, it's minus 20c, and I got to go for a ride in a great car in Portugal! fantastic! Love your reviews, one suggestion, can you give us an example of the sound system? nothing major, just a little sample. Great job, keep up the good work.

Great review, as always. The replacement of the 6 cylinder with the 4 is not so controversial for me. But there's something aesthetically discordant about the headlights and grill. I guess the headlights curve too much into the center, and the rectangular grill clashes with the curves that define the overall shape of the body.

I agree that the little design tweaks to the exterior are great, however I think that the old interior looked more elegant due to the less plasticky looking vents.

You do a great job reviewing these cars and if there is one car I lust for in the "affordable" group, it is this one. A 718 Boxster S is the perfect daily driver-do it all car for me. I can't afford it yet, but I hope to in the not too distant future.

the S is overpriced indeed comparing to the normal version. The Boxster / Cayman is a car that you can very very well buy in the basis spec and just add some features you really appreciated

Fantastic review as always, Thomas. I'm a bit disappointed you didn't get more time to drive the base model and compare the two. And I think the interior is a bit underwhelming; the Audi TT-S has much better value in that regard. But there's a purity and agility about the Boxster I think is amazing.

+Mike Doolittle thanks! I drove the base model some time more after shooting, the difference is not THAT huge, of course you notice a little bit that you have more power in the S, but it is no game changer. Difference is greater between manual and automatic in driving feeling

Greetings from the USA. I haven't commented in a while but had to say something for a Porsche review! Great review as always, thank you. The usual English term for the shifting down effect is either rev-matching or throttle blipping. Where did you film? It looked like an old NATO airfield with some cool old planes. Are you going to review the BMW M2?

Excellent stuff just like the below mentioned 718 Cayman. If you think it's expensive (wherever you are), here in Norway where I live the Boxster starts at 829.000 kroner which is 88.000 euro (August 2016). Yeah ... it hurts!

You guys don't understand the 6cylinder NA are not good anymore. When they said everyone is going turbo they meant FORMULA ONE racing!!! F1 reduced their engine to 6V turbo which is a huge difference from the old F1 engines of V8-V10. Think about what your gaining from the engine reduction... you get less weight, more handling, more response, lower center of gravity. The turbochargers are more like supercharge setup so not really much lags like bolt on turbos. NA are not efficient anymore, before you can even reach the high revs you already on the next stop light so really... NA are only fun on the race track if you can keep it 6,800RPM above and loud engine sounds which isn't the really concept of PERFORMANCE!!! Purist just got used to the lovely sounds of NA but if you really want a true NA cars, might as well settle for mid-level sport cars such as S2000, GT86, Miata... lower power meant your going to push that engine and really rely on those RPMs. BMW are NOT even NA anymore, so Porsche are not selling out. So move on or get dust...

+goons123flofy Ive been in the Corvette....but never in the porsche. The vette is fine to me... im sure the Cayman is just as low to the ground as the vette. The only problem i have is that when I option out the new Cayman to my liking on the Porsche site... I comes in OVER the amount of a base 911..... which makes me wonder.... get a stripper 911 or a spec'd out Cayman S.... With the vette, i dont have that problem, the packages are what they are and the prices dont fluctuate as much, and with the new grand sport... im leaning towards the vette. I have a year to figure this out... but this is a pretty good problem to have. lol

Thanks for the review Thomas! I'm sure it really drives great, but I have always felt the rear of the boxster looks a bit strange. And it still does.. The engine sounds great, for a 4 cylinder... I guess it would have been ok if they offered one 4 cylinder engine as an entry level boxster, for a clearly lower price. But if I were to spend this kind of money, I would definitely want a good old screaming 6 cylinder engine. Comparing the looks and sound to an F-type, the Jaguar wins hands down in both areas. That would be an easy choice for me!
@autogefuehl
@autogefuehl 8 жыл бұрын
+artemusje2 thanks! Hm well I thought so too at first, but after driving both in a quite close time period, I would go for the Boxster. It is more comfortable, more refined and the handling is so much better. And on the motorway, the F-TYPE really annoys you after a while. And I say that although I love the F-TYPE styling wise

That's interesting to hear, Thomas! And I must admit, that things like sound and comfort on longer drives are important to me. Maybe it's not such an easy choice after all! :-)

Great review you covered the cars features very well. I don't agree with some of the things you said but i can understand your opinion. ( mainly didn't like what you said about it being quiet through towns, if i buy a sports car i want to hear it, people living near a road choose to live near a road and my noise as i drive past is only very temporary) So... i have a 2014 981 Cayman S that i was thinking about trading in for a newer model Cayman when it comes out. Then the 718 come along. Things i don't like on the exterior. The rear splitter/diffuser isn't vented nicely like the 981, the front bumper looks almost flat and overly square with those weird indents at the sides, the side skirts have a horrible gouge/indent down the side of them, the side vents look overly square, i know why they did it as the 981 vents have a painted edge and get chipped to hell. I cant decide if i like the black Porsche bar under the spoiler. Interior, quite similar to the 981 although the new rounded vents are a hideous design decision they just look bad and slapped on where as the 981's are integrated into the dash shape (square styling outside round inside? come on!). Also don't like the sports wheel with the mode button, the whole point of the sports wheel was to remove all the buttons and make it a pure driving experience what happened? finally the radio/nav pcm, what the hell! the one in my car looks way better, I like the recessed screen on mine as you can rest your hand on the ledge at the bottom to get better finger control when going over bumps, also they dumped the sound control button which is really handy for making adjustments without having to look at the screen while driving. Then finally the BIG thing! The engine, yes it has more power yes its a bit faster yes it has a turbo, but the sound! Where is the sound? Where are screaming the high rpm's? The thing i love most about my 981 over and above any other feature is the sound first then handling then the acceleration. That high revving 6 cylinder full bodied scream is 50% of my buying decision. It makes me smile, obnoxiously blip the throttle in traffic, in tunnels, driving down a road with sound reflective walls objects. It just makes the car feel special, and all my friends agree when they are a passenger in the car. For me as a car enthusiast that drives my 981 to work as my daily runabout car, regardless of ultimately how fast or slow it is, the 981s is in no way lacking power. I can assure anyone it has enough power, it can hit license banning speeds way way too easily! Yes i have faster cars and bikes but i just love the sound of the Porsche flat 6 on full revs its just totally addictive deep and engrossing. I love that i can enjoy it every day unlike the screaming high pitch Ferrari and Lamborghini engines that are somewhat more fragile and highly strung for daily driving. The 917 just sounds flat and low revving it just doesn't sound special it doesn't make me shudder and say listen to that engine its just eehhhh, kinda like my wife's run about 4 cylinder vw tiguan. So my final thoughts... I'm not going to swap my 981 in for a 917 i just don't want or desire a Porsche with a 4 cylinder engine. Regardless of if its faster, everyone knows its a 4 cylinder Porsche and I'm just not OK with that and i wouldn't feel good sitting in it having people know that! Call it vein if you wish, that's just how i feel and I'm sure a lot of people will feel the same, even if they are not brave enough to expose their vanity! I think Porsche may be in trouble with this car, its more expensive and less desirable new, in a used market i think resale values will be poor compared to the 6 cylinder cars but! They drive very well and will make good buys for people who just want something they don't care about to whore round a track every weekend. If i wanted a 4 cylinder mid engine sports car i would just go buy a lotus exige. I'm on the backup list for a gt4 hopefully i will get one otherwise i will just keep the 981 until Porsche decide the 4 cylinder mid engine thing as a bad idea, hopefully relent and start making 6 cylinder Cayman's again. If that doesn't happen, maybe i will just keep the 981 and put a gt3 or a 6cylinder turbo engine in it, once the Porsche warranty has expired and make it a track car and return to something like a BMW m3/4 for a daily driver as Porsche no longer offers a cheap daily driver that i want.
