Hello guys! A few years ago, I was in a bad car wreck, got disabled and suffered from horrible depression. Then I watched Jim’s Freedumb special on Netflix and been following him ever since! Watching your comedy specials and show has really helped me get through massive depression. So, thank you Jim for helping me in my life. My wife, Holly, and I watch your podcast on KZbin every week. We love each and every one of you guys and wish you all the best. It’s actually our anniversary this weekend, so if you could tell my wife “Happy Anniversary” for marrying this big dumb idiot, that would mean so much. Thank you for your time.

As an Austria I want to add that Austria is much older than Australia. The name Ostarrichi (today Österreich in german) was first documented 996 (not sure when the British gave it an english name - Austria - though). Interestingly (for history buffs): Austria means east (germanic: "empire in the east"), Australia means south (from latin "terra australis"=land in the south). So, although their names are so similar, they derive from 2 completely different cardinal directions.
@brenobacci
@brenobacci Жыл бұрын
Not "completely" different cardinal positions... just 90 degrees. Completeley different from Österreich would be Westreich, and from Australia would be Setentrionalia or something like that. 😋😁

The first manned flight was on November 21st 1783 and the hot air balloon took off from where the Eiffel tower now stands, and the crowd that showed up to watch was the world's largest gathering up to that point, Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson were in attendance, and on the side of the balloon were the largest portraits of the king and queen ever made, and as the balloon flew over the crowd one of the passengers started shouting his name "JE SUIS PILATRÊ!" which is where we get the word pilot.

I think a physics episode is needed because Jim asked some good questions about relativity that were not getting answered. Also he asked about whether a plane flying onto the spin of the earth would arrive faster. Really great question and she said no but did not explain why, it’s because of gravity the atmosphere spins with the earth just like we are attached to the ground so you still have to travel through it as normal.
@thilde007
@thilde007 8 ай бұрын
Agreed. Rockets going to orbit usually go with the spin of earth because it’s a speed boost if you’re trying to leave the atmosphere

From google: "Distributors in both Australia and New Zealand changed the title of this classic comedy from "Airplane!" to "Flying High" because they thought it would be too similar to another American movie released at the same time. "The Concorde... Airport '79" was an unrelated film to "Airplane." However, due to release delays of US films at the time, it was released in 1980 in Australia and named "Airport '80." Having "Airplane" and "Airport '80" released at the same time would have caused much confusion to moviegoers, so distributors changed the title."

There WAS a crash caused directly by smoking, and it wasn't until 2016. EgyptAir flight 804 from Paris to Cairo crashed into the Mediterranean when a cigarette held by one of the pilots set aflame an oxygen mask. The mask had been inadvertently set to "emergency", so a higher than normal oxygen level flowed, which resulted in a huge fire that overtook the entire cockpit. 66 people died because Egypt hadn't outlawed pilots smoking on duty.

Ok, that was some damned smart stuff about flying against the earth's spin. When Jim was told he was wromg, he said "Ah, is it cos it's in the same atmosphere?" Yep, pretty much -- the same "reference frame." The earth actually isn't spinning, according to the earth's reference frame. It's like what they said about running on a train -- yes, you are running faster, according to the ground; but according to the train, you're not. Importantly, there's no "right" reference frame -- it's all just about where you're standing. It seems like Jim feels a bit of a fool for asking these questions, but they're difficult concepts and he almost gets them right intuitively.

Yeah, back in the days you’d die from a scrap, or pleurisy and consumption. Also you have to consider access to medical attention. I for a bit I grew up near where one of the largest consumption clinics was. They said the dry air and altitude helped. Also, approx 3 cases of bubonic plague occurs in the United States every year. Partially due to people eating roadkill in the south such as armadillo.

Before Australia it was called Terra Australis, aboriginal cultures across the continent had developed over 250 languages in over 800 dialects so it may be hard to find one singular name for the continent, we sure don’t know it. based on their world understandings from what European settlers say there wasn’t a single name for the land. Though we did genocide a whole bunch of them, so maybe the original word is lost to time.
