During childhood and early adulthood, our bones develop their strength, but as we age, our bones lose calcium, causing bone thinning. A solution to that issue is embracing a bone-friendly diet and lifestyle to strengthen our bones or minimize age-related bone loss.
However, the best diet to prevent osteoporosis is not just eating calcium-rich foods. It’s also about avoiding certain foods and ingredients that can impact your bone health when consumed in large quantities.
You might find it surprising that some ingredients you thought were good for you are harming your bones and overall health. And that's what I'm here to discuss with my guest, Mira Dessy, better known as The Ingredient Guru.
A holistic nutrition professional, author, and popular public speaker, Mira knows that it's not just what you eat but what's in what you eat. We also know you can't just give up dark chocolate or coffee and other food additives, so we're providing you with healthy options so you can start gradually making healthy swaps to what's on your kitchen table.
Are you curious about what ingredients to watch out for? Let's jump into another informative episode of the Happy Bones, Happy Life podcast!

I started reading labels and when I looked up the carrageenan I stopped using the whipping cream, and all my chest pain and blood pressure went normal. I'm not taking medication now. Spinach smoothies in my 40s/50s caused me to develop a big stone in my right kidney...way too big to pass, over 2cm. Still there; according to urologist, it won't hurt me even though I often suffer lower right back pain. 😢 Also, my parathyroid malfunctioned, causing calcium to be leached from my bones. Now osteopenic. Parathyroidectomy has corrected blood calcium levels. Drinking lemon water to help dissolve kidney stone, but I am going to have another doctor look at this situation. Oxalates can be dangerous. Go to Sally K. Norton's site, or buy her book to help save bones!

@@bitrudder3792 According to scientist, even bananas,blackberries,strawberries,apples, apricots,lemons,peaches,cherries, have low Oxalate, when you cook the longevity spinach you reduce the Oxalate, including benefits, it’s medicinal, combat diabetes, improve liver health, its fiber promote digestion and guts health, they are even talking about the possibility of its anti cancer properties. I have a neighbor she is 83 years old, God bless her soul, she still clean her yard by herself, she always eat her longevity spinach, she said has been doing it as long as she remember, she doesn’t has kidney stone. My nephew produces kidney stones, from protein, he has to be clean every so often, never he has eating spinach. I have been eating spinach for six years, I am 70, I don’t have kidney stones, I painted my entire house inside, outside, attended a big garden, canning, I painted even my driveway. Set rinsed raw organic chicken into Pressure Cooker. Cover entire chicken with organic veg and/or chicken broth; add fresh (diced/seeded) organic Meyer lemon; 1/4 cup fresh crushed leaves of organic lemon thyme; 1 tsp freshly crushed black pepper corns; 1 whole white sliced medium onion (or five stalks chop green onions for Miso taste); 1/2 tsp Celtic salt (best brand: '82 Minerals'). Set on stove on medium pressure cooker for 4 hours. After cooking time bones of chicken should 'fall apart' - if not add more liquid, reseal pressure cooker, and cook for additional time (2 hours more?) This is not only a bone broth but a bone stew that supplies the bone minerals and vitamins. Remember to discard the knuckles at the end of the bone's grissel as they will not dissolve in pressure cooker. Seal and freeze in glass jars for 3 months. Bon Apètite

Bone broth is problematic for some people and healing for others. But you don't even have to get fancy with it. Pure distilled water over bones/meat, and you can add a dash of organic vinegar, organic/biodynamic wine, lemon juice… Some acid that helps call nutrients out of the bones. Skim off any physical debris that floats to the top. Done. You can add vegetables as you like, if you don't mind plant toxins.

Also save all of your egg shells. They are loaded with natural calcium rinsed them and put them in the fridge. Throw them in with your soup broth. Let it boil, strain everything. Yep that’s it.

@bitrudder3792

there doesn't seem to be any general agreement on that question about stock versus broth. The usual question to ask for health purposes is whether or not it was made from bones or flesh or both. And I've seen the terms used interchangeably for that. Sometimes people distinguish between whether bones are roasted as to whether the resulting liquid is called stock or broth. So no matter what the dictionary says, just ask the company what the heck they're doing.

@TheIngredientGuru 12 күн бұрын
Hi @aemami7698 Dietary cholesterol typically doesn't have a huge impact on blood cholesterol levels, those are from what's produced in your liver and intestines (only about 20% comes from your food). If your cholesterol levels are high I would encourage you to work with a holistic nutrition professional to create a protocol to help you lower your cholesterol.
@bitrudder3792
@bitrudder3792 5 күн бұрын
I highly recommend that you read "the cholesterol Hoax." The lower your cholesterol, the more likely you are to die from any cause. The higher your cholesterol, the more likely you are to live longer and healthier. Cholesterol is the building block for all of our hormones, and repairs cell walls. if your cholesterol is high it may mean that you have recently been eating cholesterol rich foods and it may go down shortly after the lab test is done for all you know. It may also signal that your body has a lot of repair work to do. When statin drugs were discovered, the normal range for cholesterol was lowered which was a really good marketing campaign. Monitoring and prescribing statin drugs is a cash cow for the medical and pharmaceutical companies. It has no effect on whether or not people get heart attacks, etc. healthy fat is healthy, especially in the context of a healthy diet which doesn't necessarily mean what we were taught. There's a whole political game that resulted in the statin industry. Same with some other medication. Keep studying, keep learning, and study your own specific situation… If you are fortunate you might find a natural - oriented practitioner, MD or otherwise, who can advise you as to which is better for you among the different choices. Bottom line, we were told the absolutely wrong thing about consuming fat. Basically, the food pyramid should be upside down from what we were told. Give or take a few adjustments.

YES - it infuriates me to pick up either cream or butter and find additives - absolutely unnecessary and I won't buy them. Even Land O Lakes who sells butter that contains only cream and salt, sells heavy cream with carrageenan! One heavy cream you an always count on is from AE (Anderson Erickson) Dairy.

Kerry Gold from Ireland doesn't have carrageen. It does have some canola oil, though. Vermont cultured butter is the best American sources butter I know of. Excellent ingredients and ethically produced so that it doesn't spoil

I make mine with an immersion blender. One cup olive oil in small wide mouth mason jar (bullet cups work, too), drop in whole egg, salt and Dijon mustard to taste. Lower blender over egg and start on low. As the egg and oil blend, lift blender a bit and grab the rest of the oil by tipping and turning jar. Takes less than a minute. Olive oil is strong, but so much more healthy than commercial products! No preservatives, so must be used in a timely manner.

Just eat high-fat carnivore, and BOOM, no need to read labels. Meat, eggs, fish, saturated fat, etc, and that's it.

What about CAROB powder as a substitute for a hot chocolate drink?
@Savannah-ed4rv
@Savannah-ed4rv 25 күн бұрын
I don't think it has caffeine so probably a good idea! I remember being able to buy carob bars that were like chocolate bars but I think the chocolate industry took exception to that! I used to buy them all the time and then they just disappeared. I never see care of powder in the natural health stores anymore, but I assume that can be bought online.

Not Carob or cocoa. Carob is very high in oxalates. Oxalates bind to calcium as it leaves the body.
