Aura is an extension of your soul protecting your body from physical damage. When it’s broken you start taking physical damage to your body and are vulnerable to taking a very critical blow. Your aura can also be extended to your weapons to help them be more durable. As stated by Ruby “They’re an extension of ourselves! They’re a part of us!” Faunus are a race of humans in the world of RWBY where they have a singular animal body part, for instance you saw a girl with bunny ears, other examples could be wings, tails, claws, fins, or horns. Faunus do also have night vision as said in the episode where they were in class. They’re largely discriminated in this world by a lot of people, thinking Faunus are just animals thus can be used for slave labor or hunted.

- Cardin Winchester - Cardinal of Winchester - Bartholomew Oobleck - Dr. Suess' Bartholomew and the Oobleck So this was the first time the show got tears out of me. Jaune saying that he was tired of being the idiot stuck in the tree really got to me, mostly in part to Miles Luna's great voice acting. It's silly that this is the scene that got me but hey, it did. And thus the introduction of Semblances. Basically everyone gets a special little power. Ruby's is speed. Weiss is her glyphs. Pyrrha's is polarity. I do love we've seen Pyrrha use her polarity before. If you go back and watch when Pyrrha is first introduced and she throws her spear at Jaune, she doesn't even touch it when she retrieves it. Little touches like that are so fun to go back and look for. Yang literally did not move when a dude ran full speed into her. Girl is sturdy. This arc gets a lot of flack and I get it. It's a pretty generic bully arc, and back when RWBY V1 was originally airing it dragged on for four weeks with people only getting four-six minute length episodes for each of those weeks. So I can see where the frustration was coming from. Now though, with the ability to binge the show, it's honestly not that bad. I only came to the FNDM after V3 so I just got to binge it. Next week, the finale of V1. Let's go. Again, I'd like to throw out the suggestion of checking out the soundtracks with each volume, either on your own or as reactions (either way is fine). They've kind of become part of the essential RWBY viewing experience. I left a link to V1's soundtrack on the last RWBY vid.

One theory I've always had, though I think a lot fans have had this theory, is that Jaune wasn't a bad student when his dad tried teaching him to fight, but his dad was a bad teacher. From what Jaune told Pyrrah, his dad taught him a bit and then quit when he said Jaune wasn’t cut out for Huntsman work. But as we saw in the entrance exam and later here. Jaune DOES have what it takes. We also know from what Jaune said, his family comes from a line of great Huntsman. It sounds like his dad just EXPECTED Jaune to be a natural from the start like him and their ancestors, and when he saw that he wasn’t, he gave up. Jaune wasn’t a bad student or didn’t have what it takes; his dad was just a bad teacher and expected too much too soon. Jaune just needed actual training like everyone else, but because his dad didn’t realize this; it lead to Jaune getting really low confidence and forging his papers.

So some context around these episodes: Volume 1 was written as 10 episodes, but was ultimately released as 16. CRWBY (pronounced "Crew-bee", the nickname for the RWBY production team) was very new at creating an animated series, and would often miss production deadlines, which led to six of the episodes being split up to maintain the weekly releases. Any time an episode has "Part 1" or "Part 2" in the title and seems on the short side, this is one of those split episodes. That caused some negative sentiment among the fan base surrounding this run of episodes ("The Badge and the Burden" parts 1 & 2, "Jaundice" parts 1&2, and "Forever Fall" parts 1 &2.) What was meant to be a three week break from the acceleration of the main plot to focus on character development instead turned into six weeks of what fans viewed as filler- and four out of the six episodes in question being dedicated to a character outside of the core four made it even worse. As someone who discovered this series shortly after volume 1 was complete and was able to binge it, I never had a problem with these episodes. But seeing the fan discussion at the time, there was some HEAVY venom directed at the "Jaune gets bullied" arc for the first few years of the series's run.

Now you've seen the episodes that laid the groundwork for both Ruby and Jaune's roles and mentalities as leaders! Also, since the show had some difficulty explaining what a Semblance is, which the writers regret: A Semblance is basically a special power that uses their Aura as fuel. Most of the time, a person's Semblance is unique, but a Semblance can also be passed down through a bloodline. Since it uses Aura, Huntsmen have to be careful and strategic with how they use it in battle. For example, if Pyrrha had run out of Aura for whatever reason, she wouldn't have been able to move Jaune's shield and save him like this in Forever Fall. Special note: When Yang's eyes turn red and her hair bursts into flames, that's her Semblance activating. It is never stated outright in the show, but there are instances that imply that surges of negative emotion can activate a person's Semblance by accident. Yang's hotheadedness (excuse the pun) leads to her activating hers by mistake when she gets too angry.

Since this is a Jaune/Pyrrha centric with some Ren/Nora, I'd like to share the names of their weapons which someone has probably already done but for the sake of comments and engagement! Jaune Arc = Crocea Mors (Sword and Shield) = The name is latin for 'Yellow Death' and also named after Julius Caesar's swords and interestingly enough known for being embedded in it's shield (like Jaune uses the shield as a sheath) Pyrrha Nikos = Miló and Akoúo̱ (Sword/Spear/Rifle and Shield) = Miló means "Speak" and Akoúo̱ means "Listen" in greek and when her weapons are on her back it resembles her insignia/emblem design. Nora Valkyrie = Magnhild (Hammer/Grenade Launcher) = A Nordic Name which means 'Strong, mighty, strength' Lie Ren = Stormflower (Machine Pistol with Sickles) = The name is derived from Ren's lotus flower emblem. My favourites are Crocea Mors and Miló and Akoúo̱, especially with the speak to attack and shield to listen aspect which fits Pyrrha well.

I love how you really try to analyze every little thing you catch as well, it makes for a very fun and engaging reaction. 😁

Fun fact: maybe you know that every character in the series is inspired by a fairy tale, myths, etc, well in the case of team JNPR they are based on hystorical and mythologicals heros, Pyrrha is Aquiles, Ren is mulan, Nora is thor and Jaune is Jeanne'd Arc, so knowing that Jaune is Based on Jeanne is very meta that cardin bullied him, beacause in the hystory of jeanne'd arc was the cardinal of winchester the men who sentenced her to burn on the pyre and whats the full name of Cardin on the series? Cardin Winchester. P.D: sorry for my english im still learning.

These early episodes do such a great job at establishing all the character dynamics, and they will come in handy because once the plot fully kicks in, it's gonna be quite a ride! I'm loving your reactions!

Jaune’s meltdown on the roof is so painful but so good. You just wanna grab him and shake him.

I love how in sync your reactions are with Pyrrha's to Jaune explaining how he got in - the simultaneous "what?" took me out 😭

I can't believe you're already almost done with volume 1! It's always fun moving past the setup episodes and into the more character based ones, I can't wait to see your reaction to what comes next!

If you're going to be watching the rest of RWBY I'd recommend watching the World of Remnant episodes. They give a lot of context for the lore.

In case you don’t know and honestly, this is unimportant but I think it’s pretty cool and shows what goes into the connections/easter eggs for character inspirations. Cardin Winchester’s character alludes to Henry Beaufort, a Cardinal and a Bishop of Winchester who oversaw Joan of Arc’s trial and execution. In addition, Cardin’s chess piece that he took was the Black Bishop. Also his ID-number we saw on Jaune’s scroll is ‘1374-BEAUFORT’ and his weapon’s name is Executioner. In addition to that his name is also based on the theme of his team in terms of bird names (Russel Thrush, Dove Bronzewing, Sky Lark) he even has a bird emblem on his chest plate.

Little fun fact about team JNPR, They're all based on historical or mythological characters who crossdressed in their stories. Jaune is Joan of Arc, Nora is Thor, Pyrrah is Achilles, and Ren is Mulan.

You pretty much nailed it with the faunus, people with extra animal attributes and whatever abilities associated with that part, like Velvet the bunny girl, better hearing along with that night vision. I don't mind Jaune's story arch here, personally don't think it needed 4 episodes but this back in the beginning where the episodes were so short, so yeah. But it does set up for Jaune's character jounery later in the series. All I'm going to say about the final two episodes of this volume is that you are going to enjoy them.

jaundice really solidifies Ruby and Jaune’s mindsets as the leaders of their teams and it’s such an interesting theme to see play out as they continue to grow as characters and team leaders. and as excited as i am to see the finale of v1 i’m even more excited for v2 the world really starts to open up now that we’ve gotten to know our main teams

Yeah, I think this is one of the quiet moments that helped get me hooked on the show. Just that simple, blunt advice that people are depending on him, and so Jaune has to put the work in.

Man rewatching these episodes really reminds you how short they are. Lol her fixation for Blake makes these reactions even more amazing. Holy cow i just realized that they're only 2 episodes left for this Volume right?

Elijah i recommend that after every volume you should listen to the soundtrack because they tell you a LOT of story sometimes even more then the show does.

Cardin and team CRDL are typical bullies. Absolute cowards when faced with an actual threat. RWBY and JNPR would have never abandoned one of ther own like that. Damn nice to see Ruby taking Ozpin's advice to heart, she's even dishing out the same advice to others. Calling it now, Elijah's gonna love Chibi (when she catches up to it).

Nora telling her over-the-top stories, with Ren correcting her and Yang completely entranced, has always been hilarious, but the best part is finding out that it was all a dream. It's also another brief look into their personalities, I think: Nora loves fighting; Ren is more down to earth, but pays attention to everything Nora does; and Yang is right there with Nora when it comes to love for fighting, so of course she would find her tale fascinating, whether it's real or not.
