Having lived through the Chilean boom, I was frequently annoyed by the predatory nature of Chilean business practices and the complacency and inaction of successive governments as social conditions worsened year by year (crime, drugs, corruption, uncontrolled illegal immigration etc). So the resentment is partially justified. But the same Chileans who have been brainwashed by aggressive consumerism are voting not only to end the material prosperity that they still take for granted, but to dissolve the country itself. Madness.

You have to also have lived when it was a socialist economy. In Peru, I lived both models, Velasco's lefty military government (60's and 70's) and then Alan Garcia's socialist experiment in the 80's (hyper inflation of 1,800 % per year, devaluation of the currency to 1/1000 of its value and then 1/1'000,000, food shortages, plus marxist terrorism), and then in the 90's after that disastrous experiment, we were fortunate to move to a free market economy for the following 30 years. I can tell you how it was, the abysmal difference. No comparison with regards to better service, options, prices, and economic growth with the free market economy and also the relief of having got ridden of the inefficient broken and corrupted state owned companies. Unfortunately Perú is going back to stupidity, corruption and a socialist recipe we know never works.

I hope his books are translated in English. He is one of the most important intellectuals in Latin America, knows first-hand the nature of our continent and has a perspective that first world intellectuals will never have. I recommend all his books and in particular « The Neo-Inquisition », an incredible document of the current state if political correctness in the world !

As a side note: Chile has had to date 2022, a total of approximately 10 constitutions. 10.... times they rewrote and started over. People need to change and then amend the document afterwards.

Presidents come and go. As a U.S. Citizen and Permanent Resident of Chile, I am happy I am here in Chile. It seems that there are extremes at play all over the world. Fortunately we are no in the former USA now. The Chilean landscapes and views are spectacular but what makes Chile really shine is the wonderful people here in Chile. Just tops.

I think that the economy in Chile is going with an engine that has a single speed in the gearbox and the time will come when that engine is going to melt. It lacks a gearbox adapted to the true speed that the economy needs in Chile and the current government does not know what to do. Cheers.

Can you believe that Trudeu's address on more stringent gun control laws, was coincidentally issued at the same time as Boric (chilean president) revealed his radical ban on gun ownership in Chile? I lived in Canada for a while and returned to Chile in 2018, dissapointed of Canada´s progressive agenda. Little did I know Chile was going to shift towards populism on steroids!
