Baby Gorilla - Jameela with Freddie

It's the end of April and I'm visiting the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo to see Jameela. She is the baby gorilla that came from the Fort Worth Zoo. She is now with her foster mother, Freddie (Fredrika). This video only has baby gorilla Jameela and Freddie.

Cleveland Metroparks Zoo Gorilla Details:
Mokolo - born at Chicago's Lincoln Park Zoo, he came to Cleveland in 1994. At that time, he joined three younger gorillas to make up Cleveland's Bachelor Group. Eventually, we were left with only 2 gorillas, Mokolo & Bebac, then Bebac died in 2017 (from heart disease-not mentioned in the video). Mokolo is now 36 years old. He is the dad of Kayembe and Kunda. Females were brought to Cleveland starting in the Spring of 2017
Fredrika - At 49 years old, she is the oldest adult female in the troop. She is Kayembe's surrogate mom She has raised four babies of her own. She came to Cleveland from Zoo Miami in April of 2017.
Kebi - (Kebi Moyo) she came from The Columbus Zoo & Aquarium in May of 2017. She had her first baby at the age of 8. Kebi's first baby is named Kambera Dupe and she is currently at Zoo Atlanta. Kebi is now 32 years old.
Nneka - born in San Francisco. She came to Cleveland in April 2018. She gave birth to Cleveland's FIRST baby gorilla in 2021 (a male named Kayembe). She is 25 years old. Nneka's first baby was raised by its grandmother because Nneka did not show any proper maternal care then (San Francisco Zoo). Today, Fredrika is raising Nneka’s second baby, Kayembe. Again Nneka, did not show proper maternal care for this baby either.
Tusa - she is the smallest and lowest ranking adult in the troop. She arrived in Cleveland in May of 2019 from the Albuquerque BioPark Zoo in New Mexico. Tusa is 32, but has her 33rd birthday on December 2nd. Tusa was hand reared by humans, and she can get very vocal when upset.
Kayembe - has the honor of being the first baby gorilla born at the Cleveland Zoo. He was born October 26, 2021, and is two years old now. Like most toddlers, he is very active. He plays most often with Fredrika and Nneka. His birth mom is Nneka, dad is Mokolo.
Kunda - is the second baby gorilla born at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo. She was born July 19th 2023. Her mom is Kebi and her dad is Mokolo.
Jameela - born via c-section to Sekani in Fort Worth Texas zoo. Sekani is 33 years old and Jameela was her 4th baby. Sekani did not accept Jameela after recovering from her
c-section. A search for a foster mom led her to Cleveland Metroparks Zoo.
Kayembe was the first zoo born gorilla at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo.
Kunda was the second baby born in Cleveland in less then 2 years.
Jameela was the first baby born via c-section at the Fort Worth Zoo
Birthdates: Mokolo 7/10/87, Fredrika 6/5/74, Nneka 9/23/98, Kebi 1/13/91/ Tusa 12/2/89, and Kayembe 10/26/21, and Kunda 7/19/23, Jameela 1/5/24.
The Conservation status of the Western Lowland gorilla is “Critically Endangered”.

Oh how absolutely wonderful! Jameela is doing well and thriving thanks to the diligent keepers and zoo staff, and also Freddie, a magnificent surrogate. We love you Freddie! 💓💓💓 and the entire 🦍 troop as well. 😊 1:09 The white cotton ball on Jameela's butt is called "the baby signal". Gorillas have a strict set of heirarchy rules that they abide by. That white fluff ball tuft of hair tells Mokolo and everyone else in the troop Jameela is a baby/toddler, and therefore she is allowed to break certain rules 😁 as she grows, until it fades and disappears.

Freddie is not only an incredible adoptive mother but she is an amazing ambassador to all of us as we watch her tender loving care of Jameela, she is teaching us all the importance of the need for conservation for these magnificent beings in the wild. As much as her devotion to Kahemba and Jameela is on display at the zoo,the love and devotion of these gorillas is exactly how it is in the wild. The whole troupe has accepted baby Jameela just as a wild troupe protects and care for their young. Thank you Larry for this beautiful up close view into their amazing lives 🦍❣

This gorilla troop is absolutely amazing! Such a pleasure to watch. Thank you, Larry for always keeping us updated on all the precious gorillas in this group. They are all so unique and special in their own way. Freddie is an outstanding mother and she leads by example. Kebi is also an amazing and caring Mamma. I pray that Tusa and Nineka can learn from them and pass that wonderful care along to their future babies or perhaps another baby needing a surrogate. Mokolo is a great silverback and so welcoming to Jameela!!! God bless them all. Love all of them. The caretakers are also deserving of some credit as well both at the Forth Worth Zoo and Metroparks Cleveland Zoo. Look at baby girl riding up there on Freddie’s back like she’s been doing it all her wee life❣️😍 Jameela’s transfer to Cleveland has been a real triumph. For viewers who are curious about how Freddie still cares for Kayembe and how Jameela gets her bottle feeds, Cleveland Metroparks Zoo has just released an update showing Freddie breastfeeding both kids simultaneously and also showing how Freddie brings Jameela over to the mesh so the keepers can give her a bottle. Freddie was getting lots of greens beans while Jameela was feeding - I think they’re Freddie’s favourite treat. ❤ Thanks so much for another awesome video, Larry - and for the great information in the description. My updated prediction?.... She'll be tussling and tumbling with Kayembe before Kunda will... lol. She's getting visibly bigger and stronger and is sharing Mama Freddy with her big brother regularly now. Just so love Freddy and her willingness to share her love and care with these "orphaned" babies!! Had they placed her in nearby Columbus Zoo, she would be in there with her cousins, Sully and her baby, Kwame.

It's so good that Jameela is integrated into the group and she has finally found a family. On the other hand, I wonder if the zoo isn't pushing Freddie too much... and maybe Kayembe doesn't have resentment towards his adoptive mother... Freddie is already 50 years old and maybe she already needed to be retire from mother's duties...all the best to Jameela, Kayembe, Tusa, Nneka, Freddie, Kebi, Kunda and Mokolo, and for you too Larry. I dunno; I think adopting Jameela after the very initial birthing and first weeks’ phase not only doesn’t seem to be doing her any harm, but seems to be doing Freddie some good as well. She can’t keep fostering forever; tho, I wouldn’t want to be the one to try and tell her that……

This is going to give Keyembe a chance to learn the next level of socialization and how to be a good brother. This is also a good way to prevent him from growing up into a adult spoiled only child that isn’t as accepting as Mokolo is being right now. It also allows for him to bond more with his natural mother as she has been watching and learning from Freddie. I think in the other video they showed Keyembe coming out on his biological mom’s back because he has been sleeping with her. ❤

🥰Da sehe ich doch mehr Speck auf den Rippen von Jameela 👍Sie gedeiht prächtig❤ und das "Reiten" auf Freddis Rücken sieht nun selbstverständlich aus😀 Wie vorsichtig diese tolle "Mama" vorging, als Jameela noch so unsicher in den Reaktionen auf Affenbewegungen war! Die menschlichen Betreuer haben sich anders bewegt und das Baby auch anders gehalten, da musste die Kleine erst umlernen. Solches Gelingen erfüllt mich stets mit grosser Freude, herzlichen Dank auch an dich, lieber Larry!

Extra love for Mokolo, too. His life prior to the Cleveland Zoo was so different: he could have just as easily not been such a good troop Daddy. He's even come around when Kayembe gets rambunctious. Joy to see them thriving. Thank you, Larry! Your community is growing and there are such nice people in it. Way to go.

I live a few hours away from Cleveland. I told my husband about Jameela and I would like to go see her and the rest of the gorilla family and the many other animals at your zoo. Hopefully, we will be coming up one day next week.

Hi Larry. Do you think that the Silverback sense or knows that Jamella is not his blood daughter ,but accepts her anyway? Or do you think he knows no difference?

I watch a lot of gorilla video's here on KZbin and I would guess that surrogate mothers don't know if their babies are biological or not. When they see a baby, their maternal instincts just take over no matter what.

I would also guess these if a female has adopted it he would accept it. Especially a high ranking female like Fredrika (Freddie)

@@jaf8771 Gorillas are very intelligent. They know when babies are their biological babies. Even the silverbacks. Fredrika had to learn to be a mother too. She didn't raise at least two of her biological children.
