My Mum has passed on, but she was “accused” of being transgender several times, especially since she was one of the few “lady doctors” in the 1960’s. Her deep voice and slim, muscular body didn’t help, either. She wasn’t offended, and I don’t know if she had any transgender patients, but she would have been respectful. And I knew because they literally transitioned before my very eyes when I was in high school with them! 😂 All the others were adults that fully transitioned when I met them, and I wouldn’t have ever been the wiser if they decided to never tell me. One of them was a Vietnam war veteran too, so it’s not just “the young people being confused and / or brainwashed.” It’s like… tell me you never leave your mom’s basement and interact with the real world, without saying it. To be honest, this kind of thing is why I’m not pushing hard for changes in the way my organisation handles its forms… it needs a delicate touch and there are so many people who don’t understand the concepts… at all. I’m slowly getting through some basic gender inclusivity training with some key teams. It’s difficult when people say things like “I’ve never heard of gender non-binary before, that’s given me a lot to think about” because you just know that even if they’re keen to get it right they might really crash and burn. It will be a slow improvement, but I hope a steady one.

These Bad Anatomy videos show the truth of the old phrase, "They hate the things that they don't understand." As for "identifying transgender people by looks," that just expands their abuse to cisgender people who don't have traditional gendered features. I always make transphobes try to pin down how they plan to implement their exclusions. Looks catches some cisgender people and lets some transgender people through. Showing genitals is invasive and lets trans people with surgery through. Chromosomal testing requires a blood sample and lab, and excludes intersex people. Looking at ID lets transgender people through who live in civilized places that let people change their ID. All of the ways they try to exclude people are cumbersome and fail part of the time. On the other hand, accepting people are who they say they are is very simple. As for "Stealing women's titles", that's not transgender folks, that's Drag Queens. And they do it fabulously! As for injecting transgender folks with the hormones from their assigned at birth gender, this has been tried. Again and again and again. It simply doesn't work. I accept that LGBT kids can know who they are at a young age because I knew who I was at a young age. I knew I liked girls. I knew I was cisgender, though I never needed to put it into words. If I could know that, then I accept that anybody might know their orientation and gender identity as a child.

Yes! In terms of the last paragraph. I knew I liked women; I was very confused on if I liked men or not, because I wanted to be seen as a man. Since I was nine I felt that my body didn't fit my gender, but I didn't have the words for it besides "I don't want boobs; I want a flat chest." My family said what I felt about my chest was normal (in terms of cisgender folk feeling the same way I did). I didn't come out as trans until I was 20; now, I'm struggling to find a way to go on T, and hopefully, top surgery later on. I'm very depressed and so full of anxiety that my anxiety is keeping me hesitant about going on HRT.

I was watching a documentary the other day about intersex children, and those with botched circumcision, where the parents used to choose their gender at birth. Time and time again, no matter the medical and hormonal intervention, the child would begin to know who they were at startlingly young ages. It's why most doctors have stopped intervening and have suggested to let the intersex child guide you. Knowing that, it isn't such a huge leap to believe that trans kids know who they are, too.

I like it" When I was around 10, first time I found out that people can be non cis.. Now I am 19 and very trans I'm pretty sure I've known for a lot longer but never knew what it was, I just needed to see another person like me and I started to understand what I actually felt.

I didn't realize I was trans until I worked in a prison as a correctional officer. The reason being is you don't use first names in prison, only last names. So I wasn't hearing my deadname anymore and then it clicked. I looked and acted like a man in prison and it felt amazing. Everyone treated me like one because it's safer to deal with inmates that way. I didn't get brainwashed...I was 26 years old when this was happening. Everything in my life made sense to me after I realized. All those things growing up, finally made sense to me. The puzzle pieces fit together finally.

My gender has felt wrong since kindergarten, but it took me until age 47 to come out as trans. That's precisely because of lack of education, and because no one is telling people that they are trans, even when they are practically begging to be told they are trans. You made a really good point when you said "why should we trust that cisgender kids know who they are but not trans kids?". I totally agree with that statement as it would be a double standard to only trust that cisgender children know themselves but not trans children. It's the same thing with sexuality. Simply because "straight" is seen as the default, people won't even question if their children are really straight. However if their kid tells them that they're queer, they change their tune and start questioning everything because their kid identifies with something outside of the "norm". It's ridiculous and people like this shouldn't have children.

@@alilililili868 It's been pointed out that the attack helicopter is ironically a pretty good trans allegory if you're familiar with its history. The first attack helicopter was the AH-1 Cobra, which was based on the design of the UH-1 Iroquois utility helicopter. The AH-1 was fitted with stub wings, an armored tandem cockpit, and of course, a chin-mounted gun turret. It still uses the same engine, transmission, and rotors as the UH-1. Yet nobody would refer to the AH-1 as a utility helicopter anymore; it's an attack helicopter because that's what it was designed to do. Of course, given the addition of the gun turret, I would say it's more transmasc than the other way around.

I think the best way to do gender on forms that I've seen (when it's necessary at all) is first asking what gender the person is, with options like "man," "woman," "nonbinary" "other" and "prefer not to say" then a separate question for "do you identify as transgender," which is the same set up of questions that many forms in the US use for ethnicity and race (with the second question being about hispanic/latine status). It's the easiest option other than an open-ended fill in the blank, plus it's thorough.

@@AtanaaTheCurious When those questions are on job applications, sometimes it's a matter of wanting to see if there's unintended bias in the hiring process, or because they want to see if their applicant pool is as broad and diverse as they'd like. The responses to those questions (except the "what pronouns would you like us to use when communicating with you" ones) are generally not supposed to be available to the people doing the interviewing and making hiring decisions. (If a company asks me what pronouns I prefer, etc. it's also a way for them to signal "just so you know, we're not going to be a bunch of raging transphobic assholes" -- the positive sense of "virtue signaling," where they're sending a deliberate signal that they intend to respect people.)

@@TheObserver3 No, that's not what those words mean at all. Phenotype is *not* a subtype of genotype. Phenotype is the observed features, genotype is the genes. @@TheObserver3 they are different things. If you take a look at one gene that has a dominant version (A) and a recessive version (a), someone can have the genotype AA, Aa or aa. AA and Aa would result in them having the same phenotype, namely whatever the dominant gene version is, while aa would mean that they have the phenotype of the recessive gene version. Genotype is what genetics you have, phenotype is the expression of those genetics. Both are in use for reference to humans and other animals and I would assume that both are also used to refer to plants, but I know less about specific terminology for plant biology.
