Kenichi's arc is mine. I was a scrawny kid and teen, but kept grinding in martial arts and strength. I identify so much with Kenichi for that. I often think of that mini-arc where Kenichi was fighting a child-prodigy and losing until he figured out a way to win. His masters said that Kenichi is talentless in martial arts, but "has the talent of hard work." That always stuck with me.

That's the most beautiful lesson from Kenichi. Your capacity to work hard is a talent in itself. Talent is not just getting everything fast and easy. If you are smart, eager and/or hardworking, congratulations. You are talented as well!

Sometimes I do question whether Kenichi is really not "gifted". Because bro was barely a year or 2 into training and was already capable of throwing hands with people who trained their "entire life" and manage to stay toe-to-toe with them, if not pull a really gritty W.

I’ve been rewatching Kenichi and I realize it’s kind of rare for the protagonist in these type of series to start off at complete ground zero, even a good amount of sports anime and manga have the protagonist shown to have at least some sort of natural talent in whatever the sport.

Grounded Big 3. Kenichi. A thousand times, Kenichi. It's my favorite manga. It has literally changed my life and made it better. I used to be a weak, fat asthmatic. I was sick of never being able to do things others did easily. Then my anime club in college showed the episode where Siegfried was chasing Nijima. It was absolutely hilarious, so i looked up the manga for more. I fell in love. Kenichi was starting from ground zero, like I was. Sakaki is my favorite master, and it turned out there was a karate dojo not too far from my house. Fifteen years later, I'm a fifth-degree black belt, with actual kickboxing matches under my belt too (one with a 14-second TKO!) and recently taken the dojo over from my master, running my own place now. And it never would have happened without history's strongest disciple, Kenichi.

That's so heartwarming! Kenichi is my favourite manga too, I finally finished it last year and it was one of the most bitter-sweet moments in my life. When I got introduced to Kenichi as a teen (first it was anime) I was actually already a martial artist but Kenichi gave me something more than "just" huge ammounts motivation for training. It gave me an understanding of what I even want to achieve in martial arts, what to gain from them, and also it gave incredible role models (Master Akisame is my favourite and I would like to have as strong mind as him one day).

Something I liked about Kenichi was that the manga and anime were _acknowledging_ how impractical the training for him was through the comedy until his teachers stopped trying to Heihachi him into a better fighter and gave him a more realistic (sane) regimen.

I honestly feel like Kenichi was more inspirational. The other two already started with talent. But it's stated he has no talent and his progress from nothing to taking down Ragnarok is awesome. Now don't get me wrong, the other two are still awesome. I just find kenichi to be more positive.

My preferences from this 3 is Kenichi, Baki (especially early Baki), Ippo. I also thing that one overlooked aspect for this video is discussing the masters/ coaches. Kenichi has some of the best masters in any series. The great thing about them is that using "grounded" advise, the masters built Kenichi with great care in all the aspects body, mind and spirit

GroundedBig3 6:53 Ippo hands down has the best fight scene, from quality of the action depiction, pacing, to background music, to the freaking *sound effects* nutty. I can still hear Kamogawa's two iron fists blows sound effect right now as I recall them. 8:54 additionally, later in the manga, Kenichi's lack of talent was described as "regular dirt molded by master Japanese pottery craftsman and is now worth millions" bro was literally compared to dirt yet he still becomes extremely strong all due to his masters. But unlike pottery, he still need that will of steel to overcome the training and fear against enemies. Now that I realized that Kenichi had the will but no physical capability; Ippo had no mental strength but had good physical foundation, which makes an interesting juxtaposition. Elder vs Yujiro would be crazier than the last arc of the masters fighting each other 😂 I think it would be even more epic than the Kaiou Kaku fight because Elder has both raw strength AND martial art background. By the way, for anyone who doesn't know, his nickname "back in his young wild days" was "undefeated super-human" (無敵超人)

Great video. As much as I was rooting for kenichi here I also understand and respect you view points. But I love ippo I started but stopped the series I while ago and have been meaning to get back into it. But as for kenichi I recently last year in fact went back and watch the series all the way through man I love the series so much . I watched it for the first time at a similar age to kenichi and he resonated with me as a character cause I was and still the under dog. I’ve come a long way but I’ve stopped and started my fitness journey so many time throughout the years. I’m looking to get back to it and kenichi is my inspiration him and Goku. But kenichi to a degree might be more so cause of how much more realistic it is to obtain a physique like his as well as his hard work and dedication.

We need a second season of Kenichi where Shigure kidnaps him and goes in a traveling training arc exclusive to weapons. It's unfair that he accepted all of the Ryozanpaku as masters but completely disregarded Shigure teachings coz he wanted to be a barehand fighter. Would be cool if in his journey he fights the weapon disciples that appeared for the last arc Edit after finishing the video: there is no way that he has beaten the elder, he knew that they were meant for each other so he let them be, but I don't doubt he trains everyday to fight so one day beat him

#GroundedBig3 I agree with your conclussion. In regards to Kenichi, I think It's interesting that Isshinsai Ogata/Kensei actually thought of him as talented and with the potential to use both types of Ki, and the Elder sometimes compares Kenichi with his younger self. Putting aside that, it would be interesting to add Kengan Omega to the discusion with Koga's training at the beggining of the manga, or some more or less grounded manhwas/webtoons like Viral Hit, Hanlim Gym, Study Group and/or To Not Die. As always, thanks for your content, it's great

A manwa I had been following forever has JUST finished at the beginning of the year. How To Fight/ Fighter. Where the bullied MC learns to fight from youtube videos and trains to beat specific people but ends up taking on a criminal organization. It's a really good series. I put it somewhere underneath Histories Greatest Disciple. There's also manga called Holyland where a bullied nerd becomes the strongest street fighter.

And in the manga got doppo was even bigger and stronger than ever and he's between 60 to 65 I think. And even with jack, people aren't nearly as perturbed by his usage, as people are in the real world are, at the slightest hint of enhancement.

Grounded big 3. Nice. Anyways i mostly agree with everything you said but like u mentiontioned everyones opinion on what their faviroute story is will differ, and personally i prefer baki's story over ippo's. Also i think a cool category to include could have been best side characters (kinda like the kengan vs baki vid) as stuff like gym bros and teachers are important to fitness and fitness media, in my opinion atleast.

I found myself doing road work all summer (Basically just a long walk up hills) every day and shed kilos like crazy for a bit. The characters are massively inspirational especially the likes of Date Eiji, Wolg and Ippo himself. Because of them my winter routine whenever it's icy out has been to go a full 3 minute rounds of mitt boxing for cardio, it is so fun and very exhausting XD Ippo is def one of those shows I wish I found years ago, like 20005

Grounded big three. I had a a one piece dvd that had an ad for kenichi. So after I got married 12 years ago and kenichi was on Netflix for the first time, I decided to check it out. I was full on binging it, then my wife came home during one of the "plot" scenes. She looks at me like "what the hell? You really Watching this?" I was so thrown off and confused. Looking back and forth from the TV and her, then it hit, "I swear this isn't porn, just sit down and watch it with me." Then we both binged the whole series together. First anime my wife and I watched together all the way thru.

I have mad respect for all three, no doubt, but I'm undergoing the Garou/Bang route myself. Sure, they're not beating Aliens or whatever, but they--to me--encompass a training point from start to end. And not just in look, but mentality as well. We're all doing our best to make it, but it takes another soul of steel to want to get others to reach the peak of their potential, I think. 🤔

I really love kenichi since i was doing jiu jitsu with 5 getting really good winning Tournaments then starting muay Thai and finnaly going MMA going pro. 2 place ippo i really like the grind and also love the manga but it really drops the ball on chapter 1200 + with a suppresing ending and then still goes on. baki is way more entaitement then motivation for me to mutch insanity even thought i like IT.

ngl the fact that kenichi was stated to have no real talent just goes to show how hard he worked for his strength and while i only watched the anime (cuz i just don't have the time to read the manga) he is my biggest motivation by far

Ippo is easily one of my favourite shows and it's so good I'm considering reading the manga

*Grounded Big Three* 1- Ippo 2- Kennichi 3- Baki Also, even if they agreed to only punch, Baki whoops the both of them.

I 100% agree with literally everything you said in this video, but Kenichi is still my favorite. I think it just hits me hard to see a skinny dork who got bullied like me transform through nothing more than sheer determination into a true master!
