This the first song on the Unseen World album. Band-Maid opens their live concerts with that type of opening, it's called the Maid Waltz. Great song! The ladies riding on moving cars and playing, wow! Band-Maid rocks!

The intro is a variation of their “Maid Waltz” which Kanami writes for the BGM of their live concert openings, just before the first song they perform. She writes a new one each season of touring. So they must have had a giggle adding it to the intro of their first track on the album.

Love the harmonies at the beginning. Backing harmonies are usually on the 3rd or 5th of the scale, and these are on the second note of the scale, making for some really cool dissonance.

Nice reaction. What made me feel fresh when I listened to this song was the vocal style. The beginning of the song progresses in a way that Saiki answers to Miku, singing together in the middle, followed by Miku's long "Ah ..." from Kanami's solo to the end. Miku's voice is attractive even when Saiki's treble is fully produced.

They do have a standard “BM sound” a familiar outline sort of structure which the fanbase loves but they consistently manage to build something new upon that foundation and play around with the tiny details within that structure so much that you’re left feeling like they’ve done something completely new again, despite that vague sense of familiarity. In their previous albums, It was mostly Kanami working her ingenuity with the songwriting and arranging with Akane and Misa adding their bits to it. But the biggest change with this album is the much more complex vocal lines esp. with Miku being a lot more present with the backing vocals. It added extra layers of dynamics and made their tracks sound fuller and better fleshed out. Whether in terms of their overall musicianship or the maturity in their songwriting, Unseen World is truly their best so far.

You got that totally right. Whereas on previous albums Miku would sing more in harmony with what Saiki was doing vocally, on "Unseen World" she has a lot more individual vocal pieces that are working independently from Saiki's & they sound great :)

@@GaryHolloway-810 Yeah, like how she took the high notes in the 2nd verse of Manners and the start of Why why why. They aren’t powerhouse vocalists but I always felt if they can split the load with Saiki holding the main vocal lines down and Miku doing the short burst belts, it’d be perfect. And they’re really going that route now. Plus their harmonisations give them a clear edge over a single powerhouse vocalist. C rectified my little complaints on their vocal sections but UW has truly impressed me. I hope Miku keeps working on her belting technique. Being only responsible for the smaller sections, will also allow her to focus more on the rhythm guitar.

@@Dtagcity Yeah, well said. Everything is coming up roses for the maids. Their growing maturity, Saiki since her vocal surgery can sustain the power in her belting sections & hit the falsetto notes with confidence. Miku having a field day with her backing vocals & going all over the place. And now she has a lot more input on rhythm it's taken some of the work load off of Kanami. The poor girl's been looking tired with puffy eyes for the last couple of years, she deserves a bit of a breather :)

One of the best most astute reviews of the band on The Tube. You picked up so much. All the variations that so many don't. Akane is outstanding here (her extended fill) and Misa is always great. Their ability to hold a song together while providing all of the variation The Maids are known for is truly special. Kanami is just brilliant as always. Watch Without holding back ,their latest instrumental. Really highlights their musical ability in the intertwining of sound.

Oh, Band Maid will be putting out another new video this Wednesday, the 27th and then another one on February 3rd and I do believe a final video release on February 10th. The release plan was a new video every week following the release of their new album leading up to their Budokan concert (February 11th), which has , sadly, been cancelled. However, they are having a streaming concert on what was the Budokan date, February 11th.

It's not so much that there are "more" backing vocals, as that they're more often distinct counterpoint parts instead of just harmonies. This isn't new in itself for them, but they're doing it a lot more in this song and indeed this whole album.
