Since when has Dave Grohl's taste in music been brought into question? He's well known for championing a ton of undeground punk and metal bands.

Craig Mailman Ok, that's cool. Just thought bringing up Grohl's taste in music (when he's well known to have loved Metal for decades) in the way Sam did was a little weird.
@radioclash848 жыл бұрын
what are you talking about? Dave's project Probot was a homage to all of the metal bands he grew up listening to and also before Nirvana he came up in the hardcore punk scene and had was in the band Scream. I think he is very qualified to have an opinion.
@radioclash848 жыл бұрын
***** i think Nails are not your typical metal band i would say soundwise they are very close to hardcore, so it makes perfect sense. Napalm Death for all your deep description of them started out as a hardcore band. Grindcore as a genre is very much related to hardcore and punk. Don't get me wrong i think his band Foo Fighters is garbage but i think he has lot of knowledge on underground punk and metal.

Nails is so great. Every one of their releases has been solid and crushing. I just can't believe they topped the brutality of "Abandon All Life".
@ndSpaz2 жыл бұрын
I feel like they did top the brutality at "Abandon All Life", they kind of dialed it back and it really turned out in the album's favour. Abandon All Life was a bit too samey and boring.

Good call on Entombed production. HM2 pedal (or clone) is definitely present. That sound has definitely gotten overplayed over the last few years all of which was inspired by Entombed setup.

I think Kurt is a great producer but he's more of an engineer getting the sounds just right. He's produced the likes of Nails, Black Breath and Every time I die and all of these albums have sounded great on vinyl and CD.

First of all, thanks for taking the dimension of hype into account. I think it's important to discuss this phenomenon when trying to bring forth an honest review. That being said i loved this release. Always digged their style. Unsilent Death remains my no.1 though. Now, i gotta say i agree with some of the others here, and think you should lay off the stock concert videos, and fill the screen with artwork, bandpics or bits of lyrics. Again thank you, this is an awesome channel, and it's fantastic to see you on screen again, Sam.

It's a bummer to see Nails blow up like this. The band has always been designed to offer a very specific listener the shit they love. Having a broader appeal means that all these fucktards are gonna start bitching about applying their own expectations onto one of the greatest hardcore bands of all time. Also, this new record is essentially just grindcore.
@VCCassidy8 жыл бұрын
I think it's a good thing. NAILS are pure brutality and hopefully their straight-forward, no non-sense approach will clean the slate of all that sing/scream HotTopic-Core out there.

Good review, Sam, and a good decision to go to a 5-scale. Should give you some more wiggle room when you're in doubt. (Especially if still do halves) Imo, this record is top 3 of the albums I've heard so far this year, but I'm 90% confident that album of the year (for me) will be the new Hellbringer album. For people interested, look them up. It's Thrash from Australia and the production is VERY similar to Slayer's 'Hell Awaits'.

This is a solid review, but I don't think it makes sense to expect a band like Nails to come out with "Album of the Year." They're really not the kind of band that aims for any of the keywords you'd associate with that title. They make relentlessly pummeling, punishing, head-smashing music, and I think they delivered on that front on this record even more than they have on their previous releases. Each album they've put out has been a step beyond what they did previously. I dunno, I just would never expect a band like Nails to strive to make an album as ULTRA-LEGENDARY as one that might be called "Album of the Year." They're completely straightforward about what they do, even if it's not as technical or melodic or emotive as other music. They're here to make your head explode, and this album definitely delivers on that front. Just my two cents.

I'm not even a fan of "Extreme" metal, more of an old school fan, Slayer, Maiden and Ozzy is my speed and love. But I love music from all over the place, NAILS tempo changes and pure bludgeoning power has made a fan of me. This is about as heavy as I like however, the ceiling if you will... never know where great tunes are going to come from.

Excellent effort from Nails once again but at 22 minutes it's really an Ep not a full album. Hell, the excellent Behind-Beyond from Spirit Adrift clocks in 28:30 with only two songs! I've discovered a lot of cool music from Fantano and he has perfected his review style, but I've noticed an annoying trend from him over time. New, obscure-ish band releases first or breakthrough album, Anthony loves it and sings its praise. Same band releases a new album that gets a little bit more attention and now he gives it a luke-warm review because they aren't as obscure anymore. Older commercial rock band from his youth releases long-awaited new album, he acts like the record gave him literal cancer. If I know a band or album has a little bit of hype behind it I almost always know that Fantano's going to shit on it.

I think a 22-minute album is not an album, it's an EP. I don't like this type of guitar tone with a lot of fizz and never been a huge fan of grindcore. I'm more into brutal death metal. That was a good review though, thanks for keeping it heavy Banger.
@Lucols48 жыл бұрын
Since all their releases have more than 7 tracks then it's considered an album, not ep.
@CarcPazu8 жыл бұрын
So you're happy to pay the same price for a 50-minute album as you pay for a 22-minute one? The entire production takes less time, writing, recording, mixing, mastering... Personally I think calling this an album is short-changing fans even if it's grindcore and the album is amazing.

I agree with you that it's dumb to pay so much money for a short record, but at the same time I can't imagine grindcore albums lasting 50 minutes. I mean, it's too long for a grind album. But this is what happens when it is released by a big label. It is said that grindcore is not for money. Well, it depends...
