Gale's Racing Secret

Gale Banks has been building engines, racing cars and setting records for almost 60 years. In that time, he's developed a secret to winning; the calculation, logging and displaying of Manifold Air Density. Gale recently shared his secret with the competitors at Diesel Power Challenge. Interestingly enough, manifold air density (MAD) would predict 2 out of 3 of the diesel power challenge winners! Here are a couple conversations with competitors who were tuning their street trucks at the competition.

Yes, it is remarkable to see that the winning truck doesn't smoke a lot at all. It must mean that almost all fuel was being converted into actual power. Rolling coal is such a stupid polluting annoying way to run a diesel. It's just throwing away precious duel.

The extra fuel is used to cool the pistons on high hp engines. But it is kind of pointless on stock engines.

@@Hunter_meier Except, it doesn't work like that on diesels. If you overfuel, you end up with higher temps due to going closer to stoichiometric. Diesel engines run way lean from stoichiometric, so the more fuel, the closer to stoichiometric, and the higher the temps get. Also, (most) diesel engines run piston cooling jets which literally spray oil at the bottom of the piston to keep it cool. Most gasoline engines do not have this feature.

@@MacRobbSimpson I was talking about racing engines like 2000+ hp for truck and tractor pulls and the cooling jets are very common these day.if you ever watch some of them they start out blowing thick black smoke and by the the end of the run alot of them are blowing white smoke(raw fuel) because all of the fuel their dumping into the engine that is not getting burned it just depends on the tune

Delete it. Intercoolers get in the way. Big boys measure cooling in how many GPM of water is consumed.

It's amazing how many folks don't run true cold air intake systems. I hate to say it, but I bet more competition ricers with lower power output and cooler under-hood temps are running true cold air intakes. It's a basic but crucial first step for mitigating power robbing. Heck, the Challenger Hellcat runs a true cold air intake system thru the fake headlight, and the new GM trucks with the L5P have the true ram air hood scoops. Well done Gail, well done.

So is the "I dash" a stand alone computer system? I mean, would this work on a gas/carb/blower combo the same way it works on these diesel engines? Can I run it on a mechanical diesel?

The iDash is solid state device that monitor ECU activity and or run Banks BUS devices. It will work on older vehicles as long as they are running an aftermarket ECU or connected to a Banks 4 or 5 Channel Analog Module.

Gale right AF about nitrous into the manifold. It's counter intuitive because people want to put the coldest thing in the hottest place and get it evened out as fast as possible. Because you want the coldest, densest possible air the coldest density adder has to come last. Only reason to spray into an intercooler is if the cooler is under sized and can't protect the next compressor. Even then seems like it'd be a better job for water/meth than the stuff that boils at -127

Mr. Banks will you please make a snorkel intake for a classic body style Chevy. I can’t have one of your bumper intakes as I cross through water from time to time, but no one builds a snorkel for these trucks. I’m wanting to get that cooler air that’s not under the hood but even most cold air intakes pull some hot air from the motor.

Interesting !! So I guess what your looking to do is use a larger intercooler, with forced induction outside of of the engine bay to get cooler air density. This should generate more horse power, possibly using a velocity stack!! Cool stuff WOW
