I just received a notice from DMV/CARB. that I needed to get a smog test for my 2017 diesel motorhome. I had to open an account on-line with the California Air Resources Board, then pay an annual $30 fee. I had to pay for two years, they said I didn't pay last year. That's news to me, I didn't know the program existed last year. But I am certainly not going to fight them over $30. Once my account was opened I had to find a diesel-only smog test station. When my vehicle was tested and the data uploaded to CARB the screen said "pending" . My shop tried calling CARB but the phone recording said he was 153rd in line. My mechanic gave up. This is a nightmare. My motorhome will need to be tested annually, which is better than the commercial fleet who will need testing twice a year. Can you imagine owning a commercial diesel powered fleet and having to pull trucks from the field and test them twice a year??? Good lord. The death of California from a thousand cuts of regulation.

Your 2017 diesel shouldn’t need a diesel specific smog test station to test. The Certified Clean Truck Testing inspectors can come to your RV as it is just an OBD Port plug in. Plus testing doesn’t’t start until the 2025 registration renewal which is probably why your tester had issues.

It swings waaaay higher during up times and lower during down times. It's still however the 5th largest economy in the world. Simple. Set up a shell company in Montana. Set up your customers with registration through it in Montana and they can avoid sales tax, then put the plates on the rv and drive it into California where they take delivery. @ there are a lot of people doing this through an LLC which they are “ceo” of. The vehicle is registered to the LLC. You as owner of the LLC are allowed to operate the vehicle. Doug Demouro has a whole video on this. In the case of a super car that is kept in California it can be problematic, an rv is used throughout the country so can be left outside California for 180 days and easily documented as such.

They have a way bigger profile than the average citizen so they would be getting caught long before the average Joe that flies under the radar. The risk reward favors doing especially with an rv which can be kept out of state for more than half the year and documented. The local Karen’s call the cops, they pull me over, I show them the papers, they shake their heads, and send me on my way. All states have reciprocity for road use so legal where it is registered and good to go.

I am from California and have spent a lot of time in Or and Wa. You can still get some wonderful travel time in all of these states. It’s still doable. You definitely will pay a lot in Cali but in Or and Wa there’s places to get lost in the mountain and trees and enjoy. Don’t give up that now. I run a small landscape company.... in 2018 i had to buy a 2019 gas dump Isuzu truck at $52k because the diesel one I had didn't qualify to register in california (emissions). And now everything (equipment) needs to be battery operated... 1 trailer set up (I have 3) blower, trimmers, chainsaw, mower 21 inch deck, weedwacker in gas 5k ( commercial grade)...same equipment in battery 15k and batteries dont last 4hrs of work... Zero turn mowers gas new is under 8k battery 30k thats F- stupid... good job, blue.

I saw the same headline on FB, but, someone wrote that they are not banned but will require a yearly emissions test and certification sticker...from my Google question came this : "Clean Idle Provision Starting January 1, 2024, all heavy-duty diesel engines in motorhomes must have a "Clean Idle" label. This label certifies that the engine meets CARB's idle emissions standards."

Yes this was the case starting in January 2024. The ACT regulation begins in Jan 2025 and requires the gradual transition to ALL new vehicles over 8,500 lbs GVWR to be Zero emissions vehicles (ZEVs) by 2035. The problem is the “plan” for the gradual transition requires manufacturers of the chassis to produce a percentage of ZEVs in order to be allowed to produce the Diesel powered chassis. Because there are NO ZEV alternatives for motorhomes they can’t fill the requirement so they won’t be allowed to produce ANY chassis to build the diesel motorhomes on.

@@gary9080 oof....really ? I remember being on tour with a rock group in 1990. We were just coming down into the valley of L.A. from quite an elevation. Of course, the smog was a low cloud of this disgusting yellow/brown haze, but, even before we got down there my throat started to tickle and I had to keep clearing it. The irritation hit me quite a bit. Since then, CA has done remarkably well to clean things up. Also, we were in Chonqing China some years ago with a tour guide. 32M people ! It was quite overcast so I asked our guide if was going to rain ? He laughed and said, no, that's the smog. We haven't seen the sun without the haze in years !!! My thought is that China is alarmingly aware of pollution on quite a high level..they are going full o -full out to reduce emissions. They have to. After seeing that first hand, imho, we in North America do not want to get to that stage. No way. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Just got hit with the CA clean truck inspection program this year... 2001 Cat powered diesel pusher that we've owned for 14 years and drive less than 1000 miles per year in the state subject to smog testing and compliance fees effectively doubling the registration cost per year. Was told by inspector that if your diesel rig is pre-2008 it will eventually be banned entirely from state registration.

Correct me if I'm wrong...but as I understand, this regulation bans the sale of ALL motorhomes with a gross vehicle weight (GVWR) of over 8,500 pounds...not just diesel powered RV's. And, it's not just limited to California. This law has been adopted by Oregon, Washington, Mass, NJ and NY as well.

Those other states have signed on as well but are allowed to delay implementation which most are doing. It’s a gradual process to replace all internal combustion engines with ZEVs by 2035. We’re seeing accelerated effects in the class A diesel and super c motorhomes because Freightliner and Spartan (the only chassis manufacturers) have announced that they won’t be able to meet the requirements and will not be building those motorhome chassis beginning next year.

With all due respect to DeMartini RV Sales, I understand their frustration about the State of California blowing up their business model. They clearly have chosen to specialize in the luxury diesel pusher and heavy duty Class C RV market. It’s time for them to either adapt or die. They can easily make the switch to luxury 5th wheel trailers. If they really want to diversify, there are plenty of smaller Class As and Cs that are not banned from California. A few sales people are going to take a hit on their commissions, but if they were concerned about a steady income, they wouldn’t have been in sales.

Yes we are requesting to make them exempt and met with congressman Kevin Kiley on Thursday but no luck so far. It is just not right for them to take away peoples rights in CA and 11% electric motorhomes is ridiculous and impossible for the time being.

I. 04 I left california I saw the writing o the wall sold my home in Newport Beach and now I've got homes in Bosman Montana ,Park City Utah, and San Padre Island, Texas....telling you get out of CA and you whont look back.
