Ok let's talk about Barbiecore and how the latest Barbie Movie is taking over interior design. This trend blends the Barbie Movie with maximalism and just a hint of nostalgia. In this video, I go over how I think you can get this look in your own home.

Architectural Digest did a break down of Barbie dream houses through the decades and they had surprisingly sophisticated design. A lot of the furniture was copies of designer pieces. I think this trend works if people choose quality pieces and good design, not cheap plastic pieces.

While it’s definitely not for me, I do think the embracing of things that are thought of to be feminine is in general positive. “Girly” things are often thought to be frivolous, stupid, or even trashy. Especially when combine with youthful or “fun” things.
@silvasilvasilva
@silvasilvasilva Жыл бұрын
Maybe these things *are* really frivolous, and then get associated with women for that reason. Either way, I don't think we should accept whatever associations are made and just deal with the consequences. I was never a pink-wearing little flower and I refuse to accept I'm not "feminine" for being who I am. I don't need dresses or flowers to prove that.

Nick’s take is a serious one! I like pink as a contrasting color in menswear, for example, for a pop of freshness. Pink can have a Barbie-inspired moment, but it doesn’t have to be fast and it doesn’t have to look cheap. A nice pink grapefruit scented glycerin soap. A raspberry-striped tea towel in the kitchen. You get the picture.

Nick, 62 years ago I was thrilled to receive the original Barbie Dreamhouse for my eighth birthday. The one-room dreamhouse and its furniture weren't made of plastic -- they were made of cardboard. And there wasn't a drop of pink anywhere. The style was sleek and streamlined mid-century modern with a sofa, a hi-fi/TV console (with jazz record albums), and a bed. In short, it was the kind of tiny house you, Nick, would feel perfectly at home in -- except for the absence of the kitchen and the bathroom. But who needed those things since Barbie's Howard Johnson-colored sportscar was always parked outside.

I loved playing with Barbies as a kid, but I created homes for them myself. There wasn't any pink that I can remember, but there was lime green, orange, and yellow. I had an old Barbie "mod" playhouse from the 60s and I added on to it with cardboard boxes. It was my idea of glam. Any foil giftwrap that I could get my hands on became wallpaper and I also used scraps of carpet, scarves, etc to make my own house. It was very boho. My Barbie's bedroom (her name was Valerie) was wallpapered with brown giftwrap that was printed with images of reclining leopards, and she had a faux fur leopard bedspread with green velvet throw pillows that I sewed myself. The living room had a black, orange, and yellow piece of "art"--it was a tag from a men's clothing brand called "El Toro" and of course the image was of a bull. Very 70s. Update: I googled this brand, it's called "El Toro Bravo" and they made leather jackets. I still think the logo is cool. It'd look great on a poster. Valerie had it first.

One thing I think people forget is that in the Dreamhouse set, Barbie/Ken/etc are also accessories to the house. So their colors/clothing patterns are compliments to the house (or should be), so you don't have to make everything pink on pink on pink. There are lots of aquas and yellows and whites in the houses too. A lot of the "Barbie" looks on social media are pretty surface level, vague childhood memory recreations of the dreamhouse they had when they were a child (PINK), and not actually what the toys themselves looked like. Grab lots of actual reference images of the toy sets. If you grew up in the 90s, figure out which trendy 90s elements the original toy designers were aping when they made the dollhouse version of them, and go for that.
@celebrityguest.9530
@celebrityguest.9530 Жыл бұрын
everything about this!!! by all means the original dreamhouse was largely yellows and oranges and earthy tones, it's a lot more fun when you take what appeals to you and leave the rest, like barbie can be anything so why can't the decorating, y'know?

I have a really minimalist neutral house (greys and warm neutrals), and the Barbie nostalgia convinced me to get a couple of hot pink accent pillows for a little while, and i love them! A year ago I accidentally ended up with a barbie pink wall in my bedroom😅 The rest of my house is minimalist and japanese inspired, so when I first saw the wall I cried lol. I hung up a large neutral painting on the pink wall, kind of like a reverse statement art piece. The rest of the room is calming; light oak furniture, whites, textured neutral fabrics. I used some pink tones in candles around the room. It looks absolutely amazing now! I don't follow microtrends, this was just an extreme paint swatch mistake, but it did really open up my perspective on design cause I never thought I could be into something like this. I actually can't imagine going back to a more neutral color on that wall!

Have you seen the fashion photographer Jamie Nelson’s house with different colored rooms, like the Madonna inn almost? She’s on insta. Re Barbie…I just guess the corporate aspect of what women should look like is an issue for me, and bringing back those standards. I guess they have surely diversified by now, and I haven’t seen the movie. Though I enjoyed playing with Barbie and ken when I was a kid, I guess I felt pressured when ppl equated me to a barbie…or when I was younger to the flat chested one, skipper? (Or was that the boy? maybe a brief tween bedroom redo, but that’s about it. and i like pink, but not the hot pink. interestingly, i read about the set making and they said no black or white was used. i’m old enough to remember early Barbie, and she wasn’t a total hot pink girl. her famous fabulous outfit, they all had names, was Solo in the Spotlight, a black fitted sequined floor length dress with a tulle hem. she was more glam in her early days, but later in the 60’s became what we called Mod. it’s definitely fun but not permanent.

i think the fast fashionification of interior design and the fact that we have interior design fad /at all/ is the actually bad thing here lmao. like im far from pro-plastic but even if it were all linen and leather, the rapid speed with which these trends and fads come and go is THE problem, and arguably fast fashion practices with natural materials are far more destructive because of the devaluing of the heavier labour and resources that went into growing/processing those textiles and materials.

You are working so hard to talk about this in a delicate way 😂so as to not “insult” anyone. We all know this is kitchy & tacky & fun! Hopefully, people don’t buy into the movie merchandising marketing hype. But, it is so fun though! Remember the 1970’s pink tub, sink & toilet? 😂 Side note: When my son was young, his favourite colour was pink. His whole room was pink Waldorf Japandi

I didn't have girlie things growing up like the canopy bed, etc. so I have this character inside me called "Petite Rose" who occasionally makes me buy outrageous things. My sister will go through my drawers and pull out a never-worn lacy thing and say, "Petite Rose strikes again." One tip for literally everyone: Pinkish lamp shades and pinkish light bulbs make everyone and everything look more beautiful. That's why upscale restaurants use them. Try it.

I inherited my childhood home in Florida . It has a Mamie Eisenhower pink tiled small 2nd bathroom. Initially I was going to tear it out but somehow it grew on me and I decided to keep it. I wallpapered the 3rd of the wall above it with a Martinique dupe since I saw this pairing of pink and tropical green at the Beverly Hills hotel. I love this little pink bathroom now. It makes me happy. That's as "Barbie" as I want to go. Well, I am considering painting my primary bedroom's ceiling the most soft muted pink I can find. Haven't found the right color yet. If anyone knows a good muted soft pink paint color please let me know. Does this count as Barbiecore? I kinda hope not. Going more for Floridacore. 😀

I did my bedroom in the most pale pink I could find (two years ago) which was Valspar’s Mosaic Pink. The room has light from the south and west, and I painted the ceiling a pale taupe so as the light moves through the room throughout the day it reads as a pale coral then pink, then almost off white. It’s very pretty. Did a warm white trim.

i just found you recently and honestly i love how you work with things that are not necessarily to your taste and that you advocate for one's own personality over everything else. that is so important, and so overlooked nowadays i feel, with these super fast fashion trends. i find working or advicing on stuff that you don't like is way more challenging and i really like how you broke down this style (that i don't dig either) and offered suggestions for all kinds of tastes, the more over the top and the more subtle. it's really refreshing.

I wonder whether there is a Kencore or a G.I. Joecore. Kencore might incorporate things like mirrored ceilings, leather furnishings, maybe a bearskin rug. G.I. Joecore might include camoflauge curtains (green or beige), plants potted in helmuts, and canvas bed canopies with mosquito netting.

I'm a Barbie collector, have been all my life, but the Barbiecore aesthetic would only be something I do in my doll rooms. I just don't want my entire house to be my doll collection. I also don't use any pink tones in my decor outside of my doll rooms. In fact, I don't use any cool colors or red in my decor outside my doll rooms. No blue cooler than turquoise, and nothing more toward red than a coral shade. Everything between coral through the orange-yellow-green range through to turquoise is allowed, but I stay mostly in that yellow and green range, with pops of black, brown and white.

I love pink and always have, but personally, for home decoration I have incorporated very muted and (at least to me) more subtle shades. I think a bright, saturated Barbie pink can be really fun for a water bottle or a hair band (and I definitely have both) but for home decor... Well, considering most of my house is also scandi inspired, it probably would look a bit put of place. I love seeing pictures of these bright, pink maximalist spaces though, and I loved the video! There are so many styles and ideas that we can appreciate in other peoples' homes/showrooms without necessarily wanting to live with them ourselves. Great video!

When my toddler daughter (now 28) decided her favorite color was "magenta pink" I had to swallow my dislike for the color and decorate her room in pink. Yccchhhh, I'm one of those Boomer ladies who hates pink. I was about as tasteful and temporary as possible. That house came with pink and white wide striped shades in the basement, they fit my daughter's windows. I replaced her dresser and nightstand knobs with pink ones. I painted a corkboard frame pink, and bought pink and white striped bedding. She had her pink until her color sense changed, then it was easy to switch everything out.

My tiny apartmet stays the same most of the year; I just rotate pillow covers and tea towels etc but my small bathroom is where I’ve had my “extreme” ideas in form of shower curtain, hand towels and some flee market finds. It’s white with black and chrome accents (I also have black and white rug and towels) and then I add colours with just small hand towel, shower curtain and maybe second hand vase and soap dispenser. So the basics go with every style and then I can invent new look with some small details. For example I have 3 shower curtains that have teal on it: teal and green, teal and pink and teal with brown. So the teal rug and hand towels can be used with any of them. Same the black and white towels and rug. I love to change the bathroom makeovers every 3-4 months, usually with 0$.

Right, okay. While this style isnt for me because I like my maximalism more masculine, I am worried about the people in the comments here. Who hurt you that you feel like grown people shouldnt be able to wholesomely connect to their inner child for some joy and whimsical fun? You can not like it without putting people down. Also, Nick, I think you dont understand a fundamental thing about the people who gravitate towards this style. And that is that this is more in line with an alternative subculture than a simple trend. I really dont think most of these tips that are like "hold off a bit and dont fully commit" are going to be fully applicable in that case. Because this is about a lifestyle and self-expression of your identity. It's a fully immersive thing. Much like being goth is. In short, you sound like the dad telling his teenager that it's just a phase. 😂

Weeee! So excited! I don't dabble in the TV world, just the tube lately so 1) I didn't even know that there was a movie , and 2) I am a keeper of Barbie, I don't collect so much as just add on. Barbie has always had free range in my space, and I literally built them a patio condo in my office on a thrift budget of nothing yesterday and it turned out "So Pink". When I moved into my condo 25 years back I loved the pink and white ceramic 50's and 70's floors totally fit with my pink wool and teak danish dinette. I started out minimal. It's weird, I am all grey, the way I dress and look, but now, my house, it looks a little Jeanie's bottle, I have definitely become a maximalist. Love this! Thanks for taking on the challenge, so fair. Think I'll watch it again. I really love all the visual references that you use and your speech cadence is excellent!
