If I remember right this song is about breaking into the business. The first one he approached to secure a record deal didn’t think much of his songs so he went to another nearby who immediately signed him up and to the top he went! I lived near him in Oklahoma City/Moore then Norman. He was just our hometown boy singing on the radio! He was very genuine and down to earth. ❤

I just can't believe this man I grew up listening to is gone.. and his first # 1 was Should have been a Cowboy.. Don't know if y'all have listened to Trailer Hood.. it's just true Toby.. fun. Country music used to be just telling a story.. a lot of it now is more pop... but Toby was country through and through..

Saw him in concert only once. It was a blast. If I recall correctly this is the sone no label wanted to make. They said girls will never like this. So he started his own. You should check some of the other guys he produced. My personal favorite is Trailer Choir. Check the song Rockin the Beergut. Same tongue in cheek. I had that as the ringtone when my wife calls me. Shoulda Been A Cowboy is his first hit. It came out in 1993. Toby was a poet with his lyrics. He could hear someone having a conversation and then turn that into a song, and he had a way with telling stories through his singing. Crying For Me is a song that he wrote after his best friend Wayman Tillman died. Toby said that he wrote it for his friend's funeral, but he couldn't perform it because it was too soon. The saxophone 🎷 really makes it more emotional. Does That Blue Moon Ever Shine On You is a beautiful song. 🎵 American Soldier always gets me teary-eyed. If you want funny songs, listen to As good As I Once Was or Red Solo Cup, or I Wanna Talk About Me. I love How Do You Like Me Now because it's like a comeback song after many people doubted him. He lived where his heart ❤️ was, and he didn't follow the crowd.
