this is the best portrait video ive ever found but once he stopped talking i kinda got sad bc everything he said is relevant Update (2021): Hello, it has been 4 years since i first watched this video, I want to thank you for sharing this. I have been practicing the steps you taught and tried out what works best for me but i keep coming back here. I can now comfortably say that I can draw, not good enough to call myself an artist but I have had people commissioned me to draw portraits for them here and there. I can't thank you enough for the knowledge you have shared, you're a wonderful teacher!

+ Yong Chen Thanks so much for posting these videos. I prefer portrait drawing over other subjects and I've learned quite a lot from watching your videos, especially blocking in shadows. I had been going about it seemingly all wrong. I'm so into details that I spent to much time trying to get all the details. Watching you use the charcoal help move me away from focusing on small details and in that moment, getting the right values improved. Man, I'm so excited that I probably not making myself clear. Let me just say this, thank you Sir. No formal art training, I'm just a grandfather who now enjoys drawing my grand kids more often. ...thanks to you! 💯

it amazes me how your drawing turned out so beautifully when it looked so messy to start with. I was told i should always use light strokes in the beginning, so it is easier to fix later on, but you don't seem to care?

Keep in mind that vine charcoal is relatively easy to push around on the paper, which makes light strokes less of a priority in charcoal drawings

mr.yong ..are the rules for proportion of faces same in every face..i mean can we ivide every face into four equal parts ..and is the width of face always same as the distance from eyebrow to chin
@YongChen
@YongChen 9 жыл бұрын
Most people's face from hairline at top of the forehead to eyebrows has the same distance as from eyebrows to nose line and from nose line to the bottom of the chin... Most rules only can be used as guidelines and we still need to observe and compare for each portrait.

+Ricky Acosta Also a painting of someone smiling is very cheesy. This is not posing for a photograph. A painted portrait is typically aiming to depict form in space on a 2D surface. It also strives to capture the life/presence/soul of the subject.
