5:35 the whole members club thing is essentially a loop hole in the law. My country is part of the commonwealth so we have a lot of British-based laws as well. How I understand it, certain things are illegal to do in a public space. For instance in my country, casino style gambling and lewd acts (sex etc) are illegal in public, but if you have a members club, it is a private space and therefore the law doesn't apply. So basically every entrant becomes a "member" by paying a nominal fee, and you're then free to do whatever within the confines of the establishment.

I used to manage a sex club, there is no "sex license" as some people think, but your right you need have these venues as a private members club. It's not about the fee, it has to have a membership system in place, why they have ask your name etc when you get in

It's great that you went to Basement as I was not expecting you to go there. I have to say it is one of the better gay saunas i have been to. I have went on a Sunday and it is indeed the best to go as you can get up to 200 guys in the place. I do have to say Basement is very clean, prices are a bit steep, but wish it was closer to home as i have to travel 30 plus miles to get to it

Having lived in Manchester for the last five years and been to Basement once (on my birthday!) in that time, this is a very fair review which totally echoes my experience and impressions. As well as Heat in Stockport - which I’ve not visited but I’m told can or did have staff attitude issues - there’s also Pennine Sauna at Shaw near Oldham. It’s open for 4 short afternoons a week only and is part social club for its mostly more senior regulars, with hot food cooked to order from a limited menu. It’s very different to most gay saunas, partly because there are proper taps on the showers! Hope you enjoyed your time in the UK, Patrick.

Many saunas operate as a club to comply with local laws. I’m also convinced the annual fee to get extra money from clientele.

Staff in there are lazy and rude. The sauna itself us on. You should go to Northwich sauna in Cheshire. It's much bigger and much friendlier 👍

Patrick, I am totally with you on wet area facilities that don’t measure up. A room temperature dry sauna? Ugh no thanks. A lukewarm jacuzzi? No thanks. I’m NOT taking a bath for God’s sake. 10 second showers? I really like lingering under a fairly hot shower. It’s relaxing. No truly private place to douche? Not cool. But with that said, the play areas and the lighting sounded great. So a mixed bag. Your description was entertaining as always! ❤

Bad customer service at a sauna. YES! Club Body Center Detroit, Michigan.! Don’t waste your money guys! CBC Club Tampa Baths (out of business now.) Flex Baths Atlanta (Years ago). Not been to Manchester yet but I’d still try this place.

Gone there many times pre covid was good and good price. Went last Sunday. Paid a silly amount.. and I was disappointed l. I agree with everything u mentioned. Its really gone downhill. I wornt go again x

Actually, there is a second gay sauna in Manchester, called Heat in Stockport, but Basement is the better and biggest of the two.

Technically true, personally I don't bother with the distinction, it is no different Wembley or Notting Hill is part of London when it is actually part of Greater London

Stockport is not Manchester. It’s a different county and heat is a very small and no one there. If you drive I highly recommend “Northwich sauna” it is 30min drive from manc, bigger than Basement and usually 200-300guys come on weekend.

Hi Patrick. I don’t know if you’ve been to Fort Lauderdale (Club Ft Lauderdale bathhouse), but you probably would t like the customer service and the membership fee here either, but once getting in you’d enjoy yourself! But yea I’m all about Customer Service too.

Oooh, I've got opinions on Basement. The tunnel separating the 'zones' is fun, like a weird liminal portal to some sex dimension. Fun to invite someone on an adventure through it from the bar. Very linear layout, lot of stairs, tight corridors, hard place for a chonky bear with aching knees. Zero accessibility. An arctic wind howls through that steam room every time the door opens and steals all the heat. The hot tub switching on and off all the time is awful. That big darkroom is too dark - could atleast have some glow in the dark paint on the walls or something so you can sense the space, see if anybody is around, maybe highlight the gloryholes that nobody ever seems to use. The gloryhole booths themselves are badly designed, so open that they might as well not be there, not in a great place, very underused. When it's quiet there it can feel very empty with how spread out things are. Love the fishtank room though. Love the big beds right in the middle of the play area where most of the traffic is. They keep the place pretty clean and nice. Overall a good sauna. Great on a sunday when the puppy people are in town. 😉

Big tip for European saunas is Sunday afternoon and Saturday night are the busiest and best times to go if you want it busy, also bank holiday Mondays are great too!

Regarding rudeness... at one point at Oasis in Montreal there was this insanely handsome, built guy working there cleaning, of course working without a shirt. But if you approached him, he would actually yell at you to leave him alone since he was working. I mean, I get it that he was just there to do a job and should be considered "off limits", but being that hot and in that environment, maybe be a little more chill about things.

I hear ya... he should take into account the situation and learn to "fend people off" in a polite way. It's the same with go go dancers and strippers. Of course people are going to cross the line with you, so find a way to "reject" them that gets your point across without causing a scene

From my understanding as a Brit, the members club bit is more about only letting in a single gender, since if it's a public club then anyone has to be able to enter. They don't always have to charge, but it's a bit down to the council and their licences. Though it wouldn't surprise me if some clubs used this to sneak in some etra profit.

Yeah only members clubs can exclude genders, and without a local byelaw to permit a sex club a members club bypasses the national legislation.

Places like that were never my cup of tea for meeting someone and for pleasure for a few reasons. I rather go about doing that in a different way. I like to get to know the person etc. Before we have fun. Tricking ain't it for me. Plus some of those guys in the bathhouse are really werid

@@PatrickMaranoI’d add that there is a certain layer of protection in some saunas, our local sauna has a decent camera system that monitors the majority of the areas. Cubicles are still private and I believe the dungeon and dark room are also off camera, BUT they have a good level of staff roaming the facility to clean etc who also look out for people in distress or anyone who is being harassed. That safety can give some people reassurance especially if they have had bad experiences via apps or on the dating scene.
