Very good comparison video, and it made me re-consider the EV6 in my ongoing research. The EV6 does have rear heated seats, USB-C ports, and has that huge sub-woofer relocated to give a bigger rear trunk under-storage. But after all is said and done, I still go back to the I5 as the one I'll get. I really love the openness of the center console and the exterior styling more on the I5.

I've been waiting for a video on this. Seriously considering getting one of the korean twins and this was really helpful for me to help make a decision.... I really want a Model Y LR but just can't swing the cost (and the wait). Cool to know that the awd is quicker 0-60 than the Model Y LR! Thanks for a great comparo Alex.

@@PassportToPimlico if luxury is your bag rather than blistering performance the GV60 RWD 228bhp is compelling - with the following over the EV6 and ionic 5 - Nappa leather and suede seats and suede head liner, metal switch gear and metal fascia over piano black, double glazed windows, heat pump included, batter pre-conditioning and plug and go charging capability, full OTA updates, noise cancellation, Band and Olufsen stereo, electric adjustable steering wheel reach and rake, much more physical buttons for HVAC, finger print recognition, rotating crystal sphere ( motor on/off visual notification), massage driver seat while still sharing features which one or the other has like - rear window blinds and heated rear seats. Truly a car which feels like the money paid for it.

Great comparison, but one nice feature that you failed to mention is that the rear seats in the Hyundai slide fore and aft. Gives you a little bit more flexibility for rear passenger room vs cargo room. (If the seats were in the most forward position, that might explain why you found the ev6 roomier back there.)

I prefer the look of the Hyundai, and the lower price, too. The range difference is minor to me given how quickly these can charge. On a road trip you're going to have to charge every couple of hundred miles either way, and usually just midday and at the end of the day (or throw in another brief stop if you must.) At home either one can handle commutes and charge overnight.

I don't understand these comments, the range of the Ioniq is better than the EV6. EV6 base range is 230 miles where the Ioniq SE is 303 miles.

EV6 all the way (which is just as well as mine is due in a few weeks - pretty much identical to the one here). The small decrease in practicality is not an issue for me and really that's the only area where the Ioniq wins (maybe the bigger sunroof although I do like that mine will open). Looks wise for me the EV6 is fantastic and I much prefer the style of the interior as well. The Ioniq retro look is not for me at all and I suspect will age badly, while the more minimalist interior doesn't do it for me. The EV6 does drive better - less body roll and more road feel, although it's not a huge difference (don't know if the UK spec is tuned differently than in America as seems to be more noticeable here? Could also be our roads). Both great cars and miles ahead of most of the competitors.

Thanks so much Alex for doing this review! We're looking to replace our current short-range Ev, for a long range one, the EV6 and Ioniq 5 are absolutely at the top of the list. Especially because of their fast charging abilities. Please do regular updates on the EV6! We had 2 different generation Sonatas and both suffered from bad A/C compressors that self destroyed in summer weather. So we're a bit apprehensive about purchasing another Hyundai/Kia product. Thanks again Alex, we love your content!

I am really tempted. Another reveiwer commented on the lack of rear wiper. I live in a snow area and the rear window of my SUVs get dirty quickly from muddy slush. Rear wiper and washer are more important for this than maybe even rain clearing. I know you live in a non snow area Alex, but have you had any problem with visibilty on your EV6 with dirt? Thanks.

I have spent time with both of these cars. I drove the top trim "GT Line 2" (in Canada) of the EV6, and then the long range RWD version of the Ioniq 5. I was shocked by the handling difference between these two cars. The Ioniq 5 wallowed a lot, taking time for the suspension to settle after going around a corner. Your video makes me think that the suspension is firmed up for the top trim, and I wonder if the EV6 if equipped in RWD long range would have the same slow suspension. After driving both of them it was a complete 100% absolutely not buy for the Ioniq 5 in my mind, and I put money down on the EV6.

I had a test drive in the Ioniq 5, I don't really like the seats, I am a big guy, and I felt they were too much bucket or what you call it, the sides go in and hug me more than I like! I havent been in a EV6, but after seeing both IRL, I actually like the EV6 looks better! I was sure I liked the Ioniq 5 best, I do on video, but in person I prefer the EV6... I don't know if it matters though. There is more than a years wait on Ioniq 5 here, and Kia has taken prices off their website, so guessing its no better! After test driving both I'm super torn. I LOVE the exterior of the Ioniq 5 and I LOVED the interior of the EV6. The EV6 is a little more expensive in general but I can get a Wind EV6 + tech package that gets most of the features of the Limited Ioniq 5 for thousands less. But stock seems to be way lower in my area for the EV6 and dealers are charging way more because of it. The only one around here is a Wind AWD w/ tech package and they've marked it up to $64k! Gonna sit on it a few months and see what happens. Worst case I end up with something completely different.

That was an excellent review. I was charging my A3 Audi etron in Needles, when I saw the first Ioniq 5. Visited with the very happy driver, and sat in the car. He paid $57k plus sales tax. Then less the federal tax credit. It was still twice as much as what I have in my Audi. The electric car industry will not gain many buyers if they do the actual math. At $7 a gallon, I would have to drive 185,000 miles to make up the difference. That is 18 years for me. Edited for spelling.

I thank Tesla for waking up the automotive industry, and showing how we CAN have EVs... But I wouldn't want to own one! If you don't have home charging at a possibility, MAYBE I can see some arguments for them! But while the games and the farts sounds are nice gimmicks, its not something that should make you want to buy one car instead of another. The idea that you have to do basically anything from the screen or an app is straight up stupid! It's a solution to a problem that never existed, and its a worse solution than what we had before! And quality isn't really their strongsuit either! For the price of a tesla, misaligned panels and lights you can keep fish in is no less than unacceptable to me! Range is my key consideration in the EV purchase. 1) Kia EV6 Wind VS GT or Ioniq 5 SEL VS Limited - Because the higher trim ( GT or Limited) has bigger wheels and stickier tires, I was expecting a reduction of 10 - 15 Miles in range. The EPA testing doesn't indicate any change. I'm curious to know this. If there is no penalty in range, I'd go for the higher trim.

Excited to see the BZ4X after all this recall mess has been handled. I know many dislike it because it’s clear Toyota doesn’t want it’s owners to fast charge and thus made it slow and capped but with the AWD versions using CATL battery packs and the regular using the Panasonic battery tech I feel like Toyota is really putting the emphasis on long lasting EV’s rather than trying to make an EV fit in the Gas powered world of long commutes. The truth is EV’s/Non solid state battery’s aren’t ready to fully replace long distance commuters but most families it would be perfect with a level 2 chargers home installed. I like both of these cars and was trying to get an ionic but I’m not the biggest fan of under the hood’s engineering and Every Hyundai Dealer has been a nightmare to deal with both the Hyundai and Kia dealers around me have all massive mark ups and poor reputations. I’m of the opinion if you are gunna spend 50K plus on a car It better last a long time, and Fast Charging is always going to increase battery degradation. I’m honestly very happy with our Mach E.

Anyways great video. For reference every Limited Ionic 5 has a sticker price of 56k plus not to mention tax. And for that price it’s a bit rough.

The only thing you missed is the fact that only the EV6 has rear climate control vents while the Hyundai doesn’t. This steered me away from the Hyundai as I live in a hot climate and need the rear section to cool as soon as possible for the kids to be comfortable.

Not sure what you mean, the Ioniq has rear vents they are just on the pillars rather than the console

The SE doesn’t have rear air vents you will have to step up to higher trims if you want air vents for the rear passenger something that is standard on the Kia EV6

What was going on the EV6’s DRL’s? Looks like they kept going out while you were driving.

Sadly, both are just too expensive. Still good value compared to the model 3 and the comically expensive y. Since I don't need an ev yet, guess an Equinox is in my future.

Four inches less of shoulder room is as significant as the aerodynamic gain in the EV6. It would seem the size of your backseat passengers is a deciding factor as to how many could be carried comfortably and for what length of time. Awesome review that removes a ton of baloney and gets it down to where the rubber meets the road‼️

The ev6 objectively looks way better then the ioniq 5 due to one simple fact: it avtuslly looks like a god damn car, the ioniq 5 just looks like a fat prius

Alex, I love your reviews, but please bear in mind that many Kia's are not sold nationwide... and the Hyundai EV's are sold out for a year. How about finding out whether Kia sevices EV's nationwide? And pointing out which cars are unobtainable and thus not in consideration for buyers. A review is no good to me if I can't buy the darn thing!

I was considering a model Y. Went with an EV6 for two main reasons. Price, and the fact I’m certain I would dislike how you have to do nearly everything through the touch screen on the Tesla. I like physical buttons.

@@841577 My only concern would be service. For example are the Kia dealers setup for collision repair and general EV repairs like Tesla is? I've read stories of Hyundai's taking weeks or months for Ioniq 5 repairs because the parts weren't readily available.

I'm very disappointed to see that both of these have red rear turn signals. I decided a long time ago that I would never own a car that lacks amber rear turn signals because I think it is just a cheap shortcut that makes the car less safe. Automakers also do this because they think it looks better or is more fashionable - still not a good reason. As more and more EVs come to the US market, this makes my choice easier - I can just forget about the EV6 and the Ioniq 5.

You're reasoning for the small frunk space is inaccurate seeing as how the European version has a much larger and deeper frunk space in the rear wheel drive ev6 because there's no front motor underneath it...i think Kia just didn't want to spend the extra money to produce the bigger frunk in the U.S.... as far as the 2 cars themselves; the Ioniq is just ugly to me all around. It looks like a modernized Volkswagen rabbit, and they stopped making those ages ago.... you also didn't mention that the rear windows on the Ioniq don't go all the way down, they only go a little further than half way which was something old modern cars used to have for child safety except it could be turned on and off with a button on the driver's door...not so with the Ioniq, you're basically stuck with them... the only thing the Ioniq has over the Ev6 is the footrest in the rear seats when reclining...but in terms of range, power, looks, features, color options, the Ev6 beats the Ioniq across the board...the ev6 looks like it came from the future where the Ioniq looks like it used parts from the past. the only thing i don't like on the ev6 is the car graphic on the screen, it's clearly modeled after the ionic since they share the same software too. I gather they developed the Ioniq 5 1st and then just transferred the software to the ev6. I'm hoping that it can be changed down the road with an over the air system update...still not a deal breaker as is though. Lastly, one thing that tends to be important for a lot of buyers...resell value, you can sell any used Kia a lot easier than any hundai and get more for it.

Pfft, can't even go 300 miles on a single charge. Talk to me when they make EV's that can go 400 miles and don't cost an arm & a leg.

Do you routinely go places between 300 and 400 miles? Road trips likely require topping up the batteries at either range, and commutes rarely require even 100 miles. Extreme ranges require needlessly heavy, expensive battery packs, while adding minimal utility.

Look at a hybrid. Use the electric in the city, go to hybrid battery hold on the freeway, and make your trip. I routinely go on an 850 mile trip monthly, and can get 70 miles of electric charge, and 48 mpg. For a combined 61 mpg total.

If you never need to stop and stretch your legs or go to the bathroom, get the Prius Prime - you can get 25 miles EV range for putzing around town, but the total range is 650 miles. You can sit in one place for more than 8 hours straight on the highway (sounds like fun). In the US, with the federal tax credit, the Prius Prime is cheaper than the normal Prius, about $25k.

Exactly. People throw out their imaginary range numbers as if they drive 300 miles every single day and are never parked long enough for 20 minutes to charge.
