Hey Bdubs, just a quick history bit about brutalism. The term actually doesn't have anything to do with the word "brutal" as we use it in english today. The term comes from the French phrase " béton brut" meaning "raw concrete". The idea was to focus on the material qualities of the concrete itself without covering it up with another material or distracting from it with too much detail, in the same kind of way that several modern art movements have encouraged the focus to be put on the work as an object rather than as a composition by emphasizing the hand of the artist, the material qualities of the paint, the canvas, and the brush, etc. So when creating brutalist designs, you should think "raw" or "exposed" more than "brutal".

Some of the Soviet-era brutalist buildings are actually incredibly beautiful and ornate, but leave all the concrete casting seams and steel rivets and brackets for support structures that were disassembled after the building was done. The "rawness" and the fact that the base materials and construction methods aren't hidden away under paint or panelling or other finishing methods.

Brutalism is a very cool aesthetic to me particularly when it's mixed with "overgrowth." Like an old building that's been abandoned and nature has reclaimed it. Also, the variations and trying new things are one of the best parts of your series!!!

i love this series so much!! As an illustrator who is also interested in brutalist architecture, I cant tell you how much it brightens my day to see you go into the fundamental principles of these things. :-) also! the 'mess', as you described it, in your brutalist wall is generally referred to as 'greebling' or 'greeble/greeblies'! Its just a term for areas of high detail, usually in relation to diorama/model making. Anyways, keep up the good work!!

i normally hate brutalistic buildings, but seeing it in minecraft is so interesting!! i think you also came up with a really appealing general shape for the factory too which helps a lot. also using the ai for a computer helps to makw it more evil feeling, it almost feels like you've spliced open a syborg brain in the middle it's a little scary to look but definitely cool in this context

LOVE the interest in irl architecture + weathering! If you've never looked into 'neo-Andean' architecture before, it gives a maximalist/art deco appearance using 2d shapes and bright color on what are often very flat buildings. Seems like something you might have fun with!

Oh man. I love Brutalism as a style. It's my go to for Minecraft building. Love the build. I've always subscribed to the belief that a brutalist build should tell a story. It's about letting you know at a glance what the purpose of the parts of the build is. When you look at the stairwell you should instinctively know "that's the stairs" or "that's where the people go". And the story is what gives brutalism it's interest.

A way to make brutalism interesting is playing with light and geometry, one of my favorite examples is Villa Van Wassenhove. It also shows that brutalism can also have different concrete textures, often a wood-like one made by using traditional wooden molds when pouring the concrete. What you made reminds me of cyberpunk brutalism, with large plates covering something and greebling (like lego fans call it) in between the plates. ps: or like in Star Wars like he said, greebling is mostly use in lego Star Wars sets lol

Bdubs!!! Love how you've managed to pull off the brutalism style so well. By complete coincidence, I've been messing it with myself for the past few weeks but haven't found much success and I think it's because I wasn't thinking of the composition the way you described (mostly low detail with high-detailed areas interspersed as focal points). This video came in at just the right time! I hope I can take this back and implement it in my own builds. For your reference, I was pulling inspiration from artstation and buildings like the penitentiary in the Spiderhead movie (would definitely recommend you check those out for yourself if you're looking to try buildings that aren't just rectangular). The build looks great, thank you for constantly pushing the envelope of building in Minecraft and trying your hand at non-conventional styles. Way to go, keep it up! :D

One building I'd really suggest for experimenting with is the Geisel Library at UC San Diego. You may have to go big on the scale at first and THEN scale it down, but that's a building that would be a good experiment with brutalism and a good way of learning proportion, focus, and still having something look good in Minecraft!

It's something I'm never sure whether I actually like or not when I see it, but I can appreciate the architecture because it draws so much attention to itself, while somehow having less detail/design to it. New word for my braintionary: brutalism. While I'm honestly not sure how keen I like it with the rest of the world I have faith it'll eventually fit in nicely with other builds you'll do. It looks like a turkey or sugar beet processing plant here in Colorado. Will you be doing something similiar maybe at a smaller scale in the Create world? That'd look sweet. Of the many different things you do I really appreciate that you try new build styles & somehow make them your own. I always feel like I can see something & say definitively "now That's a Bdubs build." I also REALLY like the "texturing", the ombre fading effects you do. Thx for all you do! 😊

Oh my god, Bdubs!! This building is so freaking cool!! I’ve been feeling bummed out every time I try to build lately but this makes me want to try again!

Extremely late comment but I can't ever get over how much Bdubs looks like he could be John Bernthal's brother lol. I see Bdubs and a small part of my brain immediately jumps to Frank Castle.
