I was initially skeptical about Vai's inclusion in the tour based solely on my own ignorance of his prodigious talent. I understood he was a virtuoso but I associated him primarily with Dave Roth and Whitesnake. Boy was I wrong. He's bringing something incredibly exciting and vital to this music I never expected. His presence on this tour not only has made me a fan of his, but it's opened up a real interest in his entire catalog. I really love everything and everyone involved in this tour, but Vai is turning out to be a revelation.

Good on yer. Vai's solo catalog is nothing whatsoever like Roth or Whitesnake. Really more like a metall-ish version of Zappa. If that interests you, I'd recommend searching YT for the "Where the Wild Things Are" full concert and just watch the first couple of songs and you'll get the idea. Great 2-violin lineup unique to that tour, as well!

I was already a Belew fan when I heard Vai for the first time in '83. I remember thinking "wow - wouldn't it be too cool to hear Vai & Belew do something together?" Well - it took 41 years, but that wish came true, and it's maybe even better than I thought it could be!

Doesn't Bruford usually play a multi toned wood block on this? Not that Carey has to or should, but wondering if Bruford ever used a kit for this?

It's called a 'tongue drum' or 'slit drum'.....when they toured in '84- Bruford would walk around with the slit-drum miced up...Carey is using electric pads replicating the sounds

Hate to be the one who pointed out, but: while it's not bad at all, it comes short to Fripp's attack of the piece. Even the solo is... too Vai. This is why Fripp is GOD, like it or not, there's no one like him, not even Vai. Don't get me wrong, i'll be there as soon they come, music like this worth it
@tOPjon1Ай бұрын
I suspect there are some who cherish Robert Fripp (for good reason) who won't like this interpretation of 80s KC. I have never had a bad word to say about Steve Vai; in fact, among virtuoso guitarists, he has very unique solo albums and an impressive body of work, all things told. On a subjective level, however, I don't hear Vai capturing KC at this point. That isn't said to serve as criticism. I understand that, like Carey to Bruford, Vai to Fripp isn't a "novice to master" situation, but Fripp is undoubtedly unparalleled in his approach to music, guitar, and sound. It's difficult when you witness a puzzle piece as uniquely shaped as Fripp to then witness another piece--as different from him as Vai is--interpreting his work. From a guitarist's perspective, I believe I understand why Vai is bringing so much of himself into this... because he's earned his own reputation, but from the perspective of a long-time KC enthusiast, I'd like to hear Vai conforming more to what Fripp contributed to these 80s albums. I'm not a drummer, but I've noticed Carey brings a bit of Danny into Bill's work, but only so much. When Levin plays older Wetton or Lake, he isn't donning his finger extensions or using the stick... he's mostly conforming to Lake and Wetton, in order to serve the music. I think if Vai conformed more to Fripp he would better serve the music, which, btw, was always Fripp's stated approach to his part in all music he's been a part of. No disrespect to any of these accomplished musicians is intended. These four musicians are towers in their own rights. This is simply an observation.

I, too, missed some of that Fripp sobriety and restraint. Maybe it’s just me, but I feel Vai is occasionally showboating - decidedly not a KC vibe

That's why this tour is called BEAT and not King Crimson. Enough with the orthodoxy already. I caught the second show in Napa and it was phenomenal. Fripp isn't going to leave England because he's too busy performing with his wife, so give up any hope of another Crimson show. Be glad, thankful, and gracious that these four gentlemen endeavor to bring this music to the masses. That it doesn't have the reverence and seriousness of a Robert Fripp show? Who cares?
