Please join me in this video, Charles Hawtrey - A Flamboyantly Wasted Life.
Many fans of the Carry-On films consider Charles Hawtrey to be one of the outstanding members of the cast, this curious little man in goggle glasses with a thin quirky look - often receiving third billing, with only Sid James and Kenneth Williams in front of him - but was it enough for Charles?
In this video we will explore Charles Hawtrey’s beginnings as a child star of the silent era, a performer in Revue, and a regular in the popular Will Hay films but what really happened to this extraordinary actor - how did he go from working closely with Vivien Leigh the wife of Sir Laurence Olivier - to becoming a belligerent recluse in Deal on the Kent coast, where his jolly high camp flamboyant personality gave way to resentment and alcoholism.
I take flowers to Mortlake Crematorium the final resting place of Charles Hawtrey who was scattered on the rose bed - and we will take a walk through his life to discover more about the man with an unusual style of comedy brilliance built on a foundation of talent, ego, eccentricity, and notoriety.

Exactly the same could be said of Kenneth Williams for similar reasons. Neither had anything in life except their mothers and their sexuality, this in an age when self-hatred was expected of homosexuals, who were then treated as criminals. It is interesting that Barbara Windsor was a good friend of both, and both despised the Carry On films which were the source of their fame.

I can't imagine what it must have been like to grow up gay in a time when it was shamed as a sickness that was punishable with prison for practicing, but I have to wonder whether he was also on the autistic spectrum before high functioning autism was recognised. His life parallels that of Kenneth Williams. Both died alone and in mental torment. He was a product of the times. The experience of gay men back then was the same as that of Oscar Wilde, half a century earlier. Hiding behind a facade, terrified of exposure, no wonder so many gay men were actors, they had done it all their lives. Police officers used to visit public toilets in plain clothes to entrap gay men. Imagine that happening today.... Alan Carr, Tom Allen, and many others proudly proclaim their sexuality, back in the 50's and 60's that would be professional suicide and risk a prison sentence. No wonder their mental health was so precarious

It's very sad to hear that Charles was so happy on-screen and lonely off ,when you watch the carry ons Charles had a presence on these films and would be missed if he wasn't in them and he deserves just as much credit as Sid James and Kenneth Williams ❤

It's indeed heartbreaking to learn about Charles Hawtrey's off-screen struggles, especially considering the joy and presence he brought to his on-screen performances. His unique charm and comedic timing made him an indispensable part of the Carry On films, and he undoubtedly deserves recognition alongside the other iconic stars. Thank you for highlighting his contributions and acknowledging his talent, and thank you so much for watching the video - it's always appreciated! xxxx

What a brilliant and fair recollection on his life. He seems to have a lot in common with Kenneth Williams, Without the alcoholism. I think bitterness set in through a lack of a special Other half in both their cases. Born into a time where homosexuality was illegal I feel for their lack of that special other half. Your flowers like your tribute were so fitting And the conclusion at Carol Whites resting place Poignant. Her roses also perfect. Thank you for such an enjoyable reflection On Charles Hawtreys life.

Thank you so much! It’s interesting with Kenneth Williams - from what I’ve read he was often a little bit envious of how relaxed Charles was about his sexuality - although of course I don’t know if that’s true but looking at the situation from the outside it does sound possible ❤ Such turbulent lives - including the beautiful Carol’s ❤ Thank you for watching - it’s greatly appreciated xx

In the mid 60s Charles was often seen in Wimbledon riding a ladies bike with a basket on the handlebars. Wearing kaki shorts, long hooped socks and a flamboyant shirt. Looking please with himself if someone recognised him. But riding off with his nose in the air if anyone approached him. We all assumed that he was living in Wimbledon, as a lot of actors did at that time.

The scene in “don’t lose your head” where Hawtrey ascends the scaffold with a dirty laugh, then delivers a couple of killer punchlines. That scene is comedy gold. Right up there with Hancock, Sellers, Only Fools and Fawlty Towers.

I know its petty, and im probably wrong, but sounds more like Sid James. He was the dirty laugh specialist. Hawtrey makes the joke about reading the letter later. But it doesnt matter. Im a pedant. Its interesting how times have changed really. In todays times he would have been #me too'd as a peado. Thankfully the media was much less sensationalist back then. And social media certainly helped.

He rather comes across as someone who thought very highly of himself, felt thwarted by the lack of stardom, and considered the rest of the cast of Carry-On to be utterly beneath him. The episode of him dressing extravagantly on the beach and mocking the locals in Deale sounds like he didn't want to admit that he was slumming it in front of forner colleagues.

My mum and dad took me to see my first carry on film in 1969 , Carry On Camping . I was eight and I was hooked on the films after that lol. I love those films . Its true that behind a clowns face many a tear is shed. I thought Charles Hawtrey was brilliant, and I still do. It seems the more amazing and funny the character the sadder the private life , Kennith Williams being another brilliant and funny soul. I still watch them now as a pick me up if I feel down.

Hawtrey had a massive chip on his shoulder a very unpleasant man. He never got over that he'd not be ahead liner like Sid James and Kenneth Williams. He was never going to be other than supporting cast and that's what his problem was. His mother was always making out he was going to be a major star. He was also a horrible drunk who was unpleasant to anyone who went near him.

I have been meaning to find a Charles Hawtrey doc for YEARS but have always got bogged down with the crap of the modern era of nonsense. Yet, somehow, this thumbnail popped up to remind me?! INCREDIBLE! I always found his concentration levels jarring and yet at the same time part of his likeability. By that I mean he CONSTANTLY looked at the camera as if reading his lines below or looking for affirmation that he was funny. He was funny NO DOUBT! WOW! Even back then some "fans" were totally disrespectful to someone of fame. Seeing someone famous doesn't give you the right ask for anything. Just tell them "Hey, I love your work and thank you" then EFF oof! 13:43 GOD BLESS YOU for showing that R.Whites Lemonade advert from the 80's OMG! MY CHILDHOOD :D I used to perform for my mum to that lol. You adding flowers at the end while picking off dead stems was VERY touching. Your DEEP DIVE into his life was nothing short of STELLAR! Great job lady.../many hugs for this : ]

As it's 65 years since the Carry On series started, BBC Radio 4Extra had a full day devoted to them, with old interviews, anecdotes, clips, CVs. Charles was not mentioned in glowing terms though, as noted here. It's a damned shame that none of the cast received residuals, as the films became popular worldwide, year after year, and the producers must have earned £Millions. ( My very first date, aged 14, was going to see Carry On Camping! I think that's the only one I ever saw on the big screen )

I had a chance to speak with Peter Rogers not long before his death and after we had concluded the business we had been engaged in: he sat and told me stories about his dealings with certain members of the 'Carry On' team. He claimed he absolutely detested most of them and evidence of this was to be found in the casting decisions made during the late 1960's and into the 1970's, with the parts written for the actors deliberately and viciously lampooning their real-life weaknesses and foibles. Charles Hawtrey's role as Dan, Dan the Lavatory Man in Carry On Screaming was one of these. For a man whose fortune was made working with these staples of British comedy, his attitude horrified me. Fine little documentary. Well done.

I’m afraid to say he reminds me of myself during a stage I went through where I knew I could unintentionally offend any more sensitive folk I talked with, but got so tired of staying in, being picked on, or apologising, that I decided to be boisterously irreverently honest to all, and friendly only with the ones who laughed (usually the more naive/young). It wasn’t till late in life that I was finally diagnosed with autism, and understood where I lacked the ability to empathise with certain others and how that might cause offence. I wonder if Charles was just undiagnosed?

I always found Charly to be so funny in the Carry On films, he made me laugh the most. We the public never really know of the trauma behind an artists body of work, we go home thinking "that was so funny", while the artist is wondering "when will be next job?". The acting profession is so precarious, I'm not surprised some of them reach for the bottle for help, one can be a 'happy' drunk or a 'nasty' drunk and when Charles beloved mum passed he apparently became the latter. His seems to have been quite a sad life , in many ways unfulfilled, his drinking alienated himself from what could have been wonderful friendships, I don't think he liked himself very much which is deeply sad because we the public adored his very funny and quirky acting, being able to make people laugh is one of life's noblest endeavours ❤. Thank you so much for your lovely comment Robin - that sums up exactly my thoughts! It’s so sad how things went for him - and to be remembered as being so difficult - although Charlie took it all to the extreme - he wasn’t alone in those difficulties - so many of our beloved entertainers have trodden similar paths - if not quiet in the same direction as Charlie 🤭 Jack Wild is always the first to spring to mind - although he was quite different from Charlie - his drinking still took over his life but for Jack he managed to conquer those demons although like Charlie it was the smoking that ultimately took his life - so terribly sad xx Thank you so much for watching ❤️

I hear you!!!!! What is that saying - applied to women but I think applies to everyone - 'Well behaved women seldom make history' I think a magazine editor said it in the 1970s but I can't be sure - either way - I think the flaws are often what endear us more so than the perfection - and who is to say what is perfect anyway? Other than me saying Diana Dors is - haha - actually the truth is I love Diana Dors more for her faults than anything because she was honest about them and made mistakes - but rolled up her sleeves and moved forward - she got on with the job of living - and I find that inspirational in so many ways! and of course fascintating, intrugueing and interesting! xxxx as in the case of Charlie xxx

Thanks for that Shar, Charlie must of been a very unhappy person which is a shame, he couldn't quite find what exactly he wanted in life. Beautiful flowers as usual thanks again for this very in-depth story.😘

I think that too! When people are awful to others it’s often because they are unhappy and/ or dissatisfied with their lives - it’s so sad x Thank you for your lovely comment and for watching! It’s always very appreciated ❤

"The Carry On's" are a Great British Institution made when comedy was funny. I still watch them today and roar with laughter. All the cast were perfect for the characters they portrayed and Charles Hawtrey was one of the best.

This brought back some happy memories.. In the early 70's I was a dancer with the Elwy Juveniles at the Gaiety Theatre in Rhyl where Mr Hawtrey would visit the cast ... ( Aubrey Philips, Paul and Danny Denver,Georgina Staples,Dot on the organ and Roy Rolland to name but a few...) We were always given strict instructions not to speak to him or ask for an autograph. He appeared quiet, eccentric and polite.

Oh I love this Sue!!!!! Thank you so much for sharing this memory - Firstly I want to say I'm in awe of you being a dancer - that's fabulous - I admire anyone who can act, dance, sing etc! My nerves wouldn't of even let me walk on a stage!!! I'm also pleased to hear that Charles was polite! He obviously had a severe social phobia - it's so sad! Thank you for watching the video! xxx

Thank you so very much for taking the time & trouble to make this video. I grew up watching the Carry On films and was always mystified by Charles Hawtrey - There was never any information on him, no publicity and he only ever did one TV interview - So this video has really helped fill in lots of blank areas about him.

My pleasure - Thank you for watching - it’s very appreciated! I thoroughly loved making this video - Charles Hawtrey was such a fascinating character - I loved his performances in the Carry Ons - when you consider the people he worked with - for me he stood out as one of the funniest - that was quite an achievement next to some of them! ❤❤❤

Well done, this is superb. You really have a talent for these mini bios. Wouldn't it have been great to be on the set of a Carry On film for a day and mix with all those wonderful characters.

You're not kidding!!!! I would have absolutely loved to have been there and seen them all in real life - even just watching from a distance - would have been amazing! I'd have probably been to shy to talk to any of them! Which is strange I know because so many of us have grown up feeling as though we do know them - they're like part of the family! Thank you so much for your lovely comment and for watching the video ❤xxxx

Congratulations on putting out great content on your channel. Instant subscription. I think people forget just how ingrained Carry On films are in UK pop culture. Even now people say "oh Matron" if someone uses innuendo.

Great actor. Loved the man in the carry on films in particular. I believe there is still an official ‘Charles Hawtry Appreciation Society’

A great short documentary. There where bits and pieces I heard about his life but the additional information and way you structured it gave a sense of context to who Charles Hawtrey was. I also appreciated that you took the time to visit his resting place and leave some flowers, a nice genuine thing to do.
