I have something to add here. Don't treat the 20s sprint as the only part of the training. The 40s off is ALSO TRAINING. You are training your lungs to get more oxygen, you're training your heart to push that blood and O2 around, and you're training your muscles to accept it during rest periods. If you focus on breathing and staying present, your body will become better at recovering.

This is a great workout. I've been doing something like this for years. Learned it from pro coaches back in the day. Different versions though, a bit more adapted to soccer that the treadmill. If anyone is interested, I'll explain it below. Both versions share the same interval concept. Version 1: In a soccer field (or any place really), take half of it so it's a square(ish) of 50mx50m. Sprint for 50m, then turn and slowly jog 50m to the other corner before sprinting again. Please remember the jog is recovery, not actual running, so the speed shouldn't be higher than walking. This could also be back and forth instead of running a square, but it's easier for the mind going around than back and forth for extended periods of time. Version 2 (favorite version): You can go anywhere for a run, preferably a a park or a place where you can make very long runs without interruptions like crossing the street/stopping for traffic. Sprint for 1 minute, and then slowly jog to recover for 2 minutes. Recovery jog shouldn't be faster than walking. I know sprinting for 1 minute is not realistic, but what it means is that you try to keep your top speed and stick to it as your speed decreases until you get to the minute and start to recover. Perform these intervals for 20 minutes and work yourself up to 45 minutes, not more. Basically the concept is to get your body used to recovering while jogging slowly, as you shouldn't be walking in a game anyways. Active recovery is a big part of the game, and going to a complete stop doesn't exactly emulate what happens on the pitch.

I love your comment on individual training. I started soccer when I was 13, and did tons of individual training, whether it'd be dribbling, kicking the ball against the wall, imagine training with various drills. I jumped ahead of my friends who played since they were kids in technical ability only a year later. They even asked what soccer school I went to. In scrimmages, some friends say I run like I'm playing in the World Cup, and that I didn't need to do that. But it was an obsession for me. I'm happy when I have the ball at my feet, and I can chase it all day. If you love something, it never gets boring. Simple example is Cristiano Ronaldo doing all of these "silly" exercises (weighted ankles, constantly playing something, etc.) that all of his former teammates like Patrice Evra say he is crazy, but respectable crazy, and that he deserves to be where he is today. Do whatever crazy drills you want to do, better than doing none.

Hey, I’m Leo, a German soccer coach training in the second best youth academy of Germany, in Munich. I really enjoyed whatching your video. The only thing a wanted to add, is the cardio session at the beginning. I know it’s hard and you wanna do it first, because then you‘r done. But, the most effective way to do your cardio is at the end of your training. That’s because, like you said, you already are quite exsousted. Goof look!! Leo

That's wrong, if u do ur cardio after training u have no glycogen to use for cardio, that way u just lose weight better, but if u want to improve ur results u train it body to use that glycogen fast
@ryanbeatbox5 жыл бұрын
@@abram827 So much research has gone into training after in regards to conditioning and energy systems work for match fitness. Also, he's weight training at maintenance level in upper body not maxing squat for example on lower leg lifts therefore he's expending very little glycogen throughout the entire body so you would do energy systems work after, because the point is for longevity in matches mentally and physically, not improving technical performance of a skill like speed development for example. Lateral and linear speed development would require maximal energy in muscles for work (due to explosion and acceleration training and maximal neurological recruitment) so you would do that in it's own session to begin with, condition training is a different approach though. I think most coaches separate the 2 anyway, weight training is done on a periodization of 3/week or 4/week periods and can drop down to 1-2/week depending on season times (offseason, preseason, inseason, competitive) and conditioning / energy systems work are done separately along with speed development (lateral / linear). Conditioning training is done in conjunction with that usually on a 4/week setting (conditioning / lateral speed / linear speed / conditioning days) and then adjusts as you get into preseason then into inseason / competitive and periodizes from general conditioning prep moving into position specific conditioning prep in pre-season (this is also where team drills start happening). Either way though, it works for him and he enjoys it and is just sharing his views and experience not even saying it's the right or wrong way just the way that suits him.
@abram8275 жыл бұрын
@@ryanbeatbox I'm not talking about skills of muscles, I'm talking about your body systems that are trained to use the right source of fuel for more explosive power in sprints, if u want to train only technical aspects and not after growing performance in sprint then u can do it tired yes

Matt, don't listen to the haters. You have nothing to prove to them except yourself. The drills, advice, and everything you share on your channel is excellent information for any inspiring player wanting to become a professional soccer player. I am 35 years of age love playing the game. The first reason I watch your channel is because I have a 5 year old son who I got in to soccer at age 3. I am hoping that he loves the sport as much as I do, and wants to take it to a higher level then I ever did. I take him to the field and set up some of your easier drills and he does them for about 20-30 minutes, and then I lose his attention. I try not to pressure him to continue the drills because I don't want him to think of soccer as a chore or duty. I believe if he gains love for soccer he will automatically ask to do more drills to improve as a soccer player as he gains the love for the sport. Second I watch your channels because at age 35 I still want to improve as a soccer player even if I just play Sunday league games, and yes I do the drills together with my son on a natural muddy field. All the turf field we have are gated. Matt Keep up the great work and advice on the channel.

Great Video, a few tips on cardio. This type of training is called interval training. It is really excellent, but it s very very difficult. My point is that you can''t do this type of training day in day out. Your body will break down. If you want to make a routine I would do it like this. 3-4 times a week do a 15-30 minute cardio session where you run at 70% pace and pushed to a 70% breathing (breathing but not out of breath) and then hit some interval training (breathing will be 100% and you will feel like throwing up) every other week then you should see some strong results in 5-6 weeks.

You don’t need to eat man. You can do this type of training fasted or you can eat and should eat something very light; that digests very quickly and doesn’t sit in your stomach for a long time.

Bit late to the party but good workout. The pace works out as 100m in 20s, so it's the length of a pitch.

Panthomonium dude so right. It’s because people have nothing else to do, and don’t know how they truly are..so they bring others down with them, or at least try too

Really really good drills. Short, sharp, dynamic and all football related. A lot of younger players could take a lot of good ideas from this. A lot of ‘old school’ coaches believe in long distance running. Whenever in a football (soccer) match do you run for 8 miles at one pace? Whoever is saying your drills are dumb, need to realise how dumb their comment actually is. Good job mate

Matt, best overall body type to maintain for soccer? Muscular, Ronaldo de Lima/linebacker type vs. Endurance, Pele/Lance Armstrong type body? I'd love your feedback, thanks for the insights in this video by the way!

I do a workout based on the FIFA referee fitness test. It’s 40x75m with 50m walking recovery. The standard to pass is to run every single interval in under 15 seconds. And it’s not four sets of 10 or two sets of 20; it’s a direct 40 reps. It’s hard but I’ve done it a couple times, and completed each rep under the standard!

Why would anyone have a problem with training by yourself? You get the ball 100% of the time, and you can work on what you need to work on for as long as you need to work on it.
