Just seeing this now! Have painted for many years and appreciate your demo and clear explanation of why you're doing what you're doing. (Always learning!) Tomorrow I'll start a painting with a paper towel. It's a great idea for creating big color blocks, contrasting thin with thick paint, and suggesting shapes for the viewer to fill in.

Hi Kyle, these demo videos are really great and super helpful. Thank you for putting them together and sharing them. You said if we have questions to ask, and after watching some of your videos, I have a couple practical questions if you don't mind: 1. With using so much paint, especially with bright yellow, do you use a brand like blick or winton? Or are you shelling out $45/37ml of posing with a brand like old holland? Do you have a suggestion on a great value paint that you use in general? I find that ultramarine I can get away with cheap brands and it's such a strong pigment it's fine. Same with natural earth pigments. But yellows are a bit harder. 2. Do you have suggestions for where to buy canvas and what series? I'm currently finding some good ones at hobby lobby that seem reasonable, their "classic" canvases seem pretty nice for the money. Thanks for the suggestions on brushes--I bought a good handful of large brushes like 10's, 12's, a 14 even. I've found bristle to be my favorite! And Rosemary's chungking line is nice and stiff even at those larger sizes. Thanks for putting out quality instruction with painting! Phill

Thanks for teaching at such a pace we can follow ! Yea ! I really make some good notes watching your easy style. I use acrylics and some water mixable oils and hope a lot of your good instructions will work using those with lots of spraying to keep moist.

It’s not traditional but you could try vivianite as a true earth pigment and it’s blue :) Kramer pigments or golden probably has it. You could also order vivianite pigment and add it to linseed oil possibly to make an oil paint.

I discovered your teaching videos and am learning so much. Could you tell a bit more about the medium and the paint thinner? I know you have a brand you like, but what are some alternate choices. (Yes I did watch first video) Thanks!
@theartfulsouls45294 жыл бұрын
I haven't really found too many alternatives that work the way now galkyd and gamsol work. A very similar combination would be stand oil and turpentine. You might try that but be careful with turpentine because the odors can be toxic.

The paper towel I use leaves pills of paper. What kind do you use?
@theartfulsouls45296 жыл бұрын
Sherida Nett , I think Vivia or Bounty works best.. if those don't work you could always get the heavy duty blue utility paper towels. Also make sure you have plenty of medium(I use 2/3 galkyd oil mixed with 1/3 gamsol paint thinner) and paint on your towel too so you're not scrubbing too much.hope this helps:)

What brand of paint are you using? Why you don’t use a true red like pyrrole red. The cadmium red light is more an orange than a red. Just a suggestion.
@theartfulsouls45296 жыл бұрын
Oil Painter , I use the cad red light for the beginner videos because I don't want my students being able to mix too strong of a purple:) later in my advanced videos I will teach how to augment this palette with a few other colors that really broaden the range. But I'm limiting the color mixing capabilities by design in these beginner demos. Beginners always get carried away with the purples..lol:)

First time to watch you paint. Do you use a brush? You have made a wonderful, informative map for the setting, though. Very good instructions while you apply the paint. Have you been painting long? It appears that you know all the correct information to lead the beginners. As I watch, I do hope you do use a brush. You are telling everyone just how to lay it out loose and how to not get too fussy about details. I really like this way you are teaching.when I look at the painting, if I did not see your subject matter, you could be painting plein-aire out in the countryside of somewhere in Europe. Looking amazing.👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Sandra Powers , Thanks! I've been painting since I was 14...I'm now 34..so 20 years.
