I own neither but reading the comments I notice a lot of people saying that the Sub37 is the more aggressive of the two. However that is definitely not my impression. The top end on the Model D seems more aggressive to me whereas the Sub37 is really smooth. From this demonstration I'm not sure if they can be compared on that level. They both sound great and have their place. For the money the Model D just can't be ignored.
@ronnieaux52906 жыл бұрын
The SUB-37 has a very low range on the filter, so the really top-end harmonics are filtered out it seems. The Minimoog has one of the most open filters I've ever heard. Also, the SUB-37 has a lot more sub bass content (A LOT MORE) than the Minimoog Model D. The SUB-37 also gets much crunchier because there are 3 stages of distortion available (mixer overdrive, 'multidrive', and feedback distortion). But I would say the Minimoog Model D has the more EPIC distortion sound - it gets extremely powerful and deep.. very cinematic type of overdrive. I think the two most epic synths for overdrive are the Minimoog Model D and the Prophet 6 (the P6 has this way too aggressive distortion that sounds like a guitar pedal, so it's like an overkill of crunchy distortion that has a very cinematic, out of control, sound in a different way) The SUB-37 overdrives/distortion, to me, just makes for better EDM/Dance/Modern Electronic music kind of a cruchy sound.

@sbmphr I really do think that Behringer nailed it with their clone. I've considered selling my Model D for a Behringer one many times. But i decided to keep it only for its historic value and frankly because i know the components inside are better so it satisfies my inner purist. But if it were only that I want a minimoog model d tone in my productions, I'd get a behringer's for sure. I hear no issues with it at all. A+ job

Peter Venne I agree it's a bit of an apples and oranges situation. I think there's enough A/B tests of the original and clone Model D, so this showcases that you can get at least somewhat similar raw analog power without having to break the bank. The sub 37 has filter tracking set at 1:1 when you initialize a patch. If you don’t intentionally change this, you don't get as much top end sizzle on it as on a D. Consequently, many folks conclude that the sub 37 just sounds that way, and suggest that setting the filter slope to 6 is the only remedy. But all you have to do is reach over and turn the filter tracking knob to 0 and...there's the top end everyone says is "missing" from the sub 37. It's even more apparent on the subsequent 37 because it's harder to overdrive the mixer section, where as on the sub37, even the initial patch was getting pretty close to overdriven, and once you turn up oscillator 2, it definitely was. And as far as overdrive, the subsequent 37 has one of the most beautiful filter drives I've ever heard. If you want to spend another $300 just for great drive, send your sub 37 to Moog and have them upgrade the circuitry to subsequent37 circuits. It's worth it. Anyhow....turn down filter tracking and don't overdrive the mixer if you want it to sound like a D. In every way, the sub37 is a ridiculously more diverse and capable synth. No one should regret owning one, especially not because of some comparison to a clone of a much more limited synth.
@elissitdesign5 жыл бұрын
One major thing to consider is usage. The Sub has memory preset recall which is far better for performance with included keyboard. With a 1500 price tag it’s more approachable. The model D is great for studio use or simple performance patching. The size does make it easier for travel though.

@@cmangrum1 Forgive me as I'm not very knowledgable on the differences much, I'm a guitarist venturing to electronic music. I got the 25 simply cause I wanted the nice craftmanship of a Moog. The sub 25 appealed to me cause I liked that I could bank settings (16 banks) and it was a few hundred bucks cheaper than the 37. The 37 has more octaves on the actual keyboard, but the 25 has two buttons to make the two octaves available go higher or lower, being an unskilled keyboard player I couldn't imagine myself spanning more than two octaves poking sounds around and turning knobs scouting sounds to play in my tracks. I think the 37 has duo mode and not sure my 25 does, as well a few more controls over sound. Also if I want more octaves on the keyboard there's a midi in so I could interface a larger midi keyboard if I get real into it.

I had a model D, but sold it a couple a months ago. Since I make live pop and electronic music, I didn't like the fact that the Boog did not have a bank for presets. That makes it difficult to perform live and try to change between presets on stage. Now I have a Sub 37. It is awesome. It has lots of presets banks. But it is not that portable. And you know what? The behringer D is pretty decent. It suonds a bit trashy, a bit unrefined, but that doesn't mean it sounds bad. It's clearly got quite hyped top end, too. The sub osc in the Moog really shines. They both sound good, but the low end of the Poly just isn't there for me. Listening on: Yamaha HS80m, mogami gold wiring from LA Sound, apogee symphony MKI. The sub in sub37 is made abundantly clear with that sick -1 octave SUB osc. Not a fair comparison really imo, but damn for $300 the behringer is up there. Anyway, a lot of mone you spend on a synth isn't just the sound. When I pay good money, I need my synth to not fuck up, to last forever, to be under quick and painless warranty, to not wear down, to last me a life time. A lot of these Model D's come de-tuned, as is a problem with analog shit, and the only fix is to get out a soldering iron and cross your fingers. A real pain the ass. And judging by previous behringer gear from the past, I can't see any of these standing the test of time. So, I'm also willing to pay for headache medicine I guess I should say.

Even as crazy as the sub37 is supposed to sound, to my ears, it is more controllable, and more refined as an instrument. Like the 37 would work better with other instruments in a mix. I don't own the 37, and am just coming around to the D, really considering a purchase... though I'm hotter on Behringer's MS-101. That'll be first.

It doesn't win shit that's not rally they are both great synths both fat as fuck the sub 37 its more capable sonically hence the price

Hell, you might as well compare it to an ARP 2600 and a Oberheim Sem as well. lol

With all due respect this video isn't doing the Sub37 justice. Try putting the filter slope at 6 so it's more comparable with the Boog. 24 isn't giving it that higher harmonics that the Boog has. The envelope won't help you there so no point trying to tweak that. Resonance and Multi drive gives you that. The Frequency and the FDBK knob as well. The Sub37 can give you some of the Boogs top end harmonics once you set the filter correctly. The Model D is brighter but the Sub37 is far more adequate at those sounds than this demonstration illustrates. I have to point this out or people may think that this is a balanced comparison. Respectfully I disagree with what this video conveys

Luke Kage - so glad you pointed that out. I got the sub 37 to emulate the top crispy edge of the Boot rather easily using those tips. Big thanks for that critical tip.

@@pco2004 Glad it helped. It's the whole point that the Sub37 can sound smoother or just as raw as the Model D if you know how to program it. I'm lucky that the sales technician who sold me mine had owned both so he showed me the basics of how to make it sound like a Model D and then I just experimented with it.

Comparing the 2 does absolute zero good without you trying to match the synthesizers. You're basically playing 2 completely different instruments.

I own a sub 37 and sound wise the Model D DEVASTATES it.
@cvtogate6 жыл бұрын
For those that say the Behringer puts the Sub 37 to shame doesn’t own, never played or programmed a Sub37. The Moog Sub 37 has a more aggressive character and different tonality. This programmer did not do the Sub Justice...The Sub can sound like a Mini Moog and more if programmed properly ....The Behringer Model D can only mimic the sounds of a “Mini Moog”. For those that don’t own a real mini moog the Behringer does imitate it to a certain degree....and of course it’s by far cheaper in price but the REAL MOOG has a certain attack, sustain and fatness that the Behringer doesn’t deliver. Appreciate the effort but it’s like comparing apples and oranges.

Ahmm no. Sorry. It doesn't. The Model D is an astonishing effort on Behringer's part. It really is. I'd love to agree with you because I love Bob Moog but it's simply not true mate. Infuriatingly the Model D is pretty spot on doppelganger for the Mood Model D reissue. The Sub37 is a completely different beast though and if I'm honest it's a bit less flexible. It tends to be a distorting mess pretty quickly. This is why I think they redid it with the Subsequent which has a lot more headroom in the mixer section. Love the Moog but it doesn't deliver more fatness or attack and it certainly doesn't deliver "sustain" in a unique way. That's kind of a bizarre comment about the sustain actually. And I own the Moog man (I don't own the Behringer.).
@cvtogate6 жыл бұрын
rudiger It’s not spot on at all, yes it’s a great effort, agreed. I have an early release original Minimoog, Roland SE 02 and a Behringer Model D to compare it to name a few. There is a difference in depth and roundness that my Minimoog has over the Behringer and that’s subjective in my opinion. Most people forget that back in 1983 Studio Electronics made on of the first Midi Moog clones....that was spot on.
@Screaming-Trees6 жыл бұрын
It's not spot on with an early release Mini Moog, no. This is true. That said I think they were aiming for the re-released version Model D as a reference point and that's been pretty spot on. Moreover, the re-release model D is probably not spot on with your early release Mini Moog either. And it's probably safe to say that between any number of original Mini Moog versions there are vast differences in tone and tolerances etc.

Agreed on the programming bit because the sub37 is an amazing synth that goes deep in what you can do with it. Also I disagree on the differences between the original Model D and the behringer one. I own both, the only thing that differs really (which is entirely workflow oriented) is the smaller knobs making dialing in sweet spots a tad bit more challenging than on the original. Other than that, it's identical. Also while you're here, wanna buy my model D off me?😆
