"The first time I ever really listened to Kyle Kulinski’s show was in the back of a cab last summer. The driver had his phone hooked up through the stereo and was pumping out an episode through the car speakers - loudly, as if looking to convert a captive audience.
“Do you like Kyle Kulinski?”
The driver, Ahmed, was a recent immigrant and apparently a die-hard fan of Secular Talk, the political talk show that Kulinski broadcasts on KZbin. I told him, yes, in fact. I do like Kulinski, had come across his show several years ago, and, all things considered, he seemed pretty good.
“He understands what we’re up against,” Ahmed said. “Like Bernie.”
But I was surprised to hear Kulinski’s name mentioned in the same breath as Bernie Sanders, particularly with such adoration. Because what I did remember about Kulinski’s show struck me as mostly capital-P “progressive” takes on the news - the left wing of the Netroots crowd more than the democratic socialism Sanders has popularized.
It’s an impression that wasn’t entirely incorrect.
“I have no time for philosophical, airy bullshit,” Kulinski tells me from his home in Westchester, New York. “I don’t want to hear about Lenin. I don’t want to hear about Marx. I just want a super plainspoken, straightforward agenda with a straightforward way of selling it.”
With over 800,000 subscribers and nearly 670 million total views on KZbin, selling a progressive agenda is clearly something Kulinski knows how to do - even Democracy Now, the long-standing flagship of progressive media, cannot match his reach on the platform. Chapo Trap House can certainly boast a wildly devoted fan base (and a not insignificant degree of media influence), but their audience is roughly half the size of Kulinski’s.
While Secular Talk might be more likely to be looped in with the progressive networks around Air America and Pacifica alums like Sam Seder than the more resolutely socialist world, Kulinski’s fiery rhetoric, razor-sharp class instincts, and knack for withering takedowns sets him apart from his peers. Judging by his rhetoric alone, he’s closer to a Eugene Debs than a Chris Hayes.
But unlike Hayes, Amy Goodman, or his friend Cenk Uygur of The Young Turks - who began airing Secular Talk on his web network seven years ago - the thirty-two-year-old Kulinski is virtually invisible in the mainstream media. Despite his enormous fan base, his show has never once been mentioned in the obligatory trend pieces on “the Millennial Left” pumped out by the prestige media. Nor has Kulinski’s name ever popped up at all in the New York Times, Vox, the New Yorker, New York Magazine, or the Washington Post, despite his leading role in cofounding Justice Democrats, the organization widely credited with sweeping Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the rest of “the Squad” to power.
Just last week, his Wikipedia page was deleted. The reason? “There is very simply no [reliable source] coverage of this person,” according to one moderator. In new media, he’s king - the Sean Hannity of the Berniecrat left. In old media, he’s nobody.
I suspect there are a few reasons for that. There is nothing “cool” about Kulinski’s show. (As a friend put it, “‘Welcome to Secular Talk’ sounds like something you’d hear on Egyptian radio.”) His no-nonsense social-democratic politics won’t get him much cred with the Full Communism crowd. He records his show not in Brooklyn or Los Angeles, but in a studio he built himself in his modest Westchester home. His hair is too groomed and his taste in clothes too preppy to qualify as “Dirtbag Left.” Nor has he ever attended an n+1 release party. “Not only have I not attended one,” he says, “I have no idea what that means.”
And yet he’s astonishingly plugged-in for a young man in the suburbs. Wondering how Sanders ended up on the Joe Rogan Experience? Kulinski, a frequent guest on Rogan’s wildly popular show, introduced them. “You make the most sense to me,” Rogan told Kulinski on a recent episode. “You’re a normal person.”
Much like Sanders himself, Kulinski’s show has a massive audience that just doesn’t compute with our media’s understanding of “what the kids want” or even “what the left-wing kids want.”
It’s probably for the best - the very woke and very WASP-ish decorum haunting much of the media world is nowhere to be found in Secular Talk. “Corporate Democrats over-focus on identity as a trick to divert you from the issues that unite us all - class issues,” he said on a recent episode. “That Raytheon decided they don’t hate gays or trans people - frankly, I don’t really give a shit what their take on that is..."

The oversight with the JBP talk regarding "incels" is that the term "incel", while by definition only means "involuntarily celibate", has widely become a pejorative term for men who can't find a partner AND are clueless about it while being horrible people. Almost NOBODY outside of high school will denigrate someone who is involuntarily celibate, however if you make a comment that you can't find a partner, then follow up with "I need someone to make me dinner while I play video games all day". Perhaps you should start with Dr. Aaron Spitz -- a urologist who is within the consensus that agrees with both findings listed above -- and (if you're into philosophy) David Benatar, an atheist South African moral philosopher who does not believe it is unethical, much less "barbaric." Seriously, how can you say that you're any better than the climate deniers when you refuse to do the _most basic_ research on the subject, and spout off your ignorant uninformed opinion anyway?!!

I honestly think masculinity is what's making some men become worse. When they are raised to be men (be a leader, don't show emotions, etc) and when they fail in it, that they will be made to feel like a loser. Men don't have as strong of a support system as women because they are expected to be independent and not seek help. Hence why most men don't go to therapy because it is ingrained in them that therapy = weak. And they just spiral alone scared of being seen as weak because of societal pressure that a man needs to be independent, to provide and protect, and generally not show any weakness. The problem with incel becomes when they blame all of this on women and starts leaning more into the toxic masculinity and misogyny to make themselves feel like they are "the alpha male".

@@trailersfromhell2539 I don’t know. It’s just my guess; I can’t tell for sure why Peterson made the decision to join The Daily Wire. Who has the power in the hierarchy (Ben) vs. who has the power in terms of popularity (Peterson) is a valid question to ask. It’s also hard to tell to what extent Peterson would warp his own speech to meet Ben’s expectations - or whether Ben would give Peterson more leeway than other people who are working for him, in terms of the values he wants The Daily Wire to endorse. So far, I’ve only noticed few disagreements between Ben and Jordan, even prior to Jordan joining The Daily Wire. I have noticed, of course, just like Kyle, that Jordan’s tone has grown more combative ever since. And, possibly related to that, Jordan might be doubling down on all his religious stuff now, with constant affirmation coming from Ben’s side. One thing that Ben and Jordan might disagree on are state-funded higher education and public healthcare - by mere virtue of Ben being a US Republican, Jordan being a Canadian. Recently, in the interview with Icelandic television, Jordan basically said (in his usual convoluted way) that it’s hard to argue that public healthcare systems and social market economies (such as in Europe and Canada) hadn’t proven themselves a net good (in other words, he supports those things). Of course, he had to phrase that in such complicated terms, in order to make excuses for the US - as the only Western country lacking such things. If Jordan Peterson spares any criticism against the US, specifically, because all he considers important is “defending Western society as a whole against the attacks from the post-modernists”, then the American right will paint themselves into a corner, from where they’re unable to improve (because all too often, they equate “the West” with “the US”, as if the other Western countries weren’t fundamentally different from the US in several ways). In the Narcissistic States of America, the idea that all criticism from the opponents is “hate” is unfortunately very prevalent on both sides of the political aisle.

What metrics? Yes women go to college more than men but they end up with debt and a degree in social sciences the majority of the time. Not discrediting their degree but let's not pretend like it's a STEM degree. Men out earn women even when adjusted for hours worked and job positions. Yes men kill themselves at a higher rate and are 75% of the homeless population and while I do believe that services should be equally distributed the reason men kill themselves more often is because of firearm ownership and the reason they make up the majority of homeless people is because the women who would be homeless are more often than not trading their bodies away to some guy for room and board. I'm not saying us men don't have our issues, we most definitely do and the progressive movement better start addressing them, but men are not the "punching bag of society". More often than not we're the punchers.

Likewise, many more corners of twitter and reddit are dedicated to punching into women, trans people, nonwhite people, gay people...etc. Its just that young men arent used to being treated like everyone else, they have been represented in virtually all media prior to like 2012 as the main characters of society. Instead of looking at what is really happening; shows like She-Hulk constantly insults men; Tik Tok is essentially deleting accounts that speaks to what women get away with, yet lets misandry run rampant; Kyle rather go against every point in what Ben says, in regards to society being against men to a degree, like a tribal political opponent. Kyle is completely ignorant to what is happening, especially in saying that a woman who is "sexually liberated" (sleeps around) is a strong woman, and conflates it with a woman working or moving up the corporate ladder. You don't know everything, Kyle, and I guess Krystal is wearing the pants.

A woman who sleeps around can be a strong woman. The same way a woman who doesn’t sleep around can be a strong woman.

The policy solution I have to the community problem is to introduce a UBI that requires community service to be eligible. As an example, volunteer at least 8 hours per month, get $500 per month UBI. You can volunteer in whatever you want. Serving meals, animal rescues, coaching, whatever. You get involved in your community, and your community gives back to you. It also spits in the face of the “money you haven’t earned” argument. Who determines how much community service is “worth”? We do, as a community.

Conservatives argue for traditional gender roles but we’re not uptight about it like you made them out to be. For example Ben and Jordan both state the fact that relationships with such qualities make everyone happier, but they still of course want people to chose what works best for themselves

conservatives are right on that. not every man will agree to replace men with women. and not every man is weak or wimpy as is the men on the left. you know we are the laughing stock of the free world, right? they know who rules america. marxists teaching our kids in the university. and yes they ARE marxists. far left out to weaken this nation so they can have power.
