This BenQ is VA panel monitor from 2013, but it's a good illustration of VA vs IPS vs TN. Full review here: aperturegrille.com/reviews/Ben...

So far, I have really enjoyed your reviews of monitors. I have spent the last week trying to figure out the differences between different monitors on the market current, and in under an hour you gave me a better understanding of VA vs TN vs IPS than everybody else online. Keep it up! Hopefully you can get your hands on some newer monitors soon.

Thank you! I'm glad someone is watching! I'm hoping to get new and interesting monitors in, because I can't keep reviewing old stuff.

I really like your monitor reviews. All that matters is performance and picture quality. The way you dig into this is the way monitor reviews should be done.

I want to know what do you have for a gaming monitor and I'm buying that.

Damn really good review, i just returned my first VA panel "samsung C27GR50 240 hz", that + this review mentioning some issues i faced convinced me that i wont try va panel again any time soon.

What'd you dislike about that Samsung?

@@ApertureGrille color temperature uniformity visible on white page, the bottom was warmer than the top. Visible ghosting on text and in game. But the most distracting was what you pointed out on your video from 9:30, it was less strong but was still there on text or when scrolling a web page or simply moving an image or moving camera in game. Cuz of my ignorance and how it appears to me i was calling it blicking/flickering.

Really like your monitor reviews, hope at some point you do one of the ViewSonic ELITE XG270QG

Funny that you mention that! I ordered the XG270QG two days ago, so I'm hoping to get it sometime this week. It'll be my first proper G-Sync monitor review.

@@ApertureGrille Damn thats great news, thats the monitor that i personally hope takes the crown as the best gaming monitor of 2019, really eager to see your review of it.

Do you use a colorimeter, or a spectrophotometer? In case you are using a spectro, it would be good if you could upload to the colorimeter corrections open database a .ccss file made with DisplayCAL (or ArgyllCMS), so people with a colorimeter could make high precision measurements of their display using this file as a reference correction.

10:00 All VA monitors tend to (or will) behave like this?

Now I'm wondering how curved VA alleviates the crushed blacks you mentioned.

I got saddled with a set of 3 of these when i started out doing texture work, i primarily wanted a large work space with good contrasts and they worked out well enough but you're not kidding about the loss of detail while moving in games, its pretty damn atrocious.

I'm interested how you managed to boost this to 80hz refresh rate? Can't seem to go over 73hz myself, at least with HDMI and w/o third party programs (just through nvidia control panel). Stuck with this monitor for a while and trying to get more out of it by some tweaking.

It's been a while since I hooked the BenQ up, but here's what I used for the custom resolution in the NVIDIA control panel: active: 1920h 1080v Front porch: 24h 3v sync width: 32h 5v total pixels: 2008h 1098v polarity: + + That may or may not work. Could depend on each individual monitor how far it can be pushed.

@@ApertureGrille Yep, doesn't work for me. Thought our tech might pretty close since otherwise mine works with almost identical settings as yours when calibrated. Could also be a cable issue, but oh well. Thanks for the quick reply and the amazing work you're doing in this channel!

Bad gray in games on *VA panel? Small gray details are smudged when moving. This is a feature of VA matrices. Slow transition pixel of the matrix VA from gray to gray color.

I prefer VA over IPS purely due to the contrast ratio -- I'm willing to accept the dark-level smearing more than I'm willing to accept IPS glow & low contrast. IPS monitors with decent local dimming might help the contrast ratio point, but they're very expensive. As a bonus, VA monitors are notably cheaper.

VA is my least favourite monitor type (though it's fine for TVs). I use my PC to game and I also use it for text work. The nonsense with how the sub pixels light up coupled with the horrible smearing when you scroll a block of text even just on a web page just makes them terrible to me. I can't believe people buy them. I'll take a TN any day of the week over these things.
