Love Melanson's attitude towards learning. Many Catch wrestlers gave up going to bjj gyms back in those days exactly because of that close minded attitude Melanson is talking here. These gyms back then were very hostile towards new things which wrestling brought to the table; such as leg locks, top pressure, movement, unfamiliar submissions, etc. etc. Nevertheless Melanson just kept pushing forward, and even asked opponents' coaches to teach him. You gotta love that attitute!

@Adam Khan 100% man, most grappling styles are really similar it’s really just the ruleset that makes them different
@quickstep2408
@quickstep2408 2 жыл бұрын
@Adam Khan ya but the gracies didn't like leglocks at the start. thought it was more in line with the 'poor's man's grappling', luta livre (essentially brazilian catch-based) and those guys have always used/use leglocks alot. that's probably why some OG bjj gyms back in the day didn't like the catch guys; the prejudice towards the style was still there. now it's just a history-beef thing that has since been squashed. so no, OP's not claiming any origin rights to tech, and his claims on hostility towards catch back in the day were accurate.

It’s absolutely crazy how much stuff I teach just like Neil does what are the things I will talk with all the students because he shared this with me was how when he grabs the arm going into that americana he doesn’t monkey paw it! There’s so much good instruction right here and just understanding because once you’re using someone’s arm with a two on that arm and you have more leverage than the person it doesn’t matter what they’re doing if they jump on top of you break their arm if they move around you break their arm if they move anywhere pretty much you could break their arm
