Dang that’s some awesome insight! Thanks guys. My biggest flounder (5lbs down in Baffin Bay) came off a 4.5” straight tail which is very similar to a jerk Shad and I was working it up and down in 4ft of water off a flat near island structure.

Although my personal best summer flounder (also called fluke here in NJ) of #9.6 came on a belly strip of mahi. That being said, I’ve been using a 7” GULP jerk shad on 1/4 or 3/8 ounce jighead for fluke for the past 4-5 years. Mainly in tidal rivers, bays, inlets and from the surf. I’ve caught countless 20” or better fluke. I prefer fishing a ML 7-7’6” spinning rod with a 2000-25000 size reel spooled with #10 braid. I’ll use a #15 leader with a loop knot to tie on the jighead.I like to cast up current and once I feel the jig hit bottom I’ll give the jig one or 2 hoops and then allow it to settle back down. From the surf, I’ll fan cast the entire section in front of me from 9 o’clock around to 3 o’clock. My favorite colors are white, Chartreuse Pepper, New Penny, and Pink Shine.

Do you guys ever use weighted hooks with underspiners? I haven't tried them in saltwater but I caught spotted bass on one with a jerk shad. It looks good for saltwater fish too. The Strike King version I got has a screw lock like a regular weighted hook but there's a spinner by the weight. Pretty cool.

Much appreciated low down on the jerk shad in the shallows. Many thanks, can think of a few target species here in Oz that I’m keen to give it a whirl on.

Good to know about the tail bites ...that gets expensive and wasteful if they are useless after a nip. Great confidence booster to keep em in play. Keep up the great work Looking fwd to the Skinner Jerk shad video...

I have found a lot of information this channel to be useful. I do have to consider the differences between Florida and where I live in SW Louisiana. In the Gulf of Mexico, from South Texas East to Mississippi, there is an enormous underwater 200 million year old salt dome basin. It has allowed sediment and sand to pile up somewhat between the basin and the shore. For the fisherman, this means that from the shore you have miles and miles of shallow water before it gets deep. These waters are extremely fertile but the shallow sea floor is easily stirred up by wind and wave action leaving waters murky. That is why we don't have the beautiful clear waters close to shore like Florida. Dark lures generally don't do as well here for this reason. It's seasonal but sometimes the wind cooperates and the waters can clear a bit and such lures could work. But not often. White or chartreuse is big here for most inshore game fish. Speck, flounder, reds, hardheads.......hardheads?! Those worthless trash fish even sneak into your paragraph unwanted. I hatem!

Thanks for the insight! Salt Strong Coach Pat Ogletree covers the Louisiana area so we try to provide information for that area, in addition to the information from Florida.

It's not always clear in Florida. I grew up in Sarasota and the water is usually green from plankton. There's plenty of murky water, especially in the summer when it's raining and the plankton is blooming in the warm water. It gets clear in the winter and spring.

Red Cody jig with a white curly tail. It's mostly shallow around here and have even caught Southern flounder on a top water plug.

Skinner is out of eastern Long Island NY ..and he mostly uses a High-Low rig (teaser top.with.bucktail + gulp grub low) NOT a jerkshad... .Marc Chang aka ShoreMoneyFishing is the 6 inch jerkshad Guru of NJ !!!
