Phenomenal job. I enjoy a well informed instructor that doesn’t just do a data dump but explains the thought process and why that thought matters. OBTW, I often used the concept of the plumb line, but would not have applied it in this respect. I really learned something here.

I must say after only discovering Arisaka Defense less than a few months ago they seem to be a pretty solid company. I love their minimalist approach for mounting solutions. I have two of their anti-rotational sling mounts as well as two of their 1" ring weapon light mounts, all M-Lok, and they're very strong with no excess material. I questioned their scope leveler but after seeing this I'm thoroughly impressed. Wish I'd have had this when mounting my Nightforce to my REPR. I did the level/level/level (perpendicular) method and confirmed with a plumb bob and while I've never actually experienced anything to instill a lack of confidence in the mounting procedure I, too, have never really been completely sure that there wasn't a shift when torquing the scope rings.

#1 on the ONE-PIECE mount. A quality one-piece mount is machined with the rings perfectly aligned. This means you should not need to hand lap the rings with a ring lapping kit to prevent torsion on the scope tube from poorly aligned rings. I have a NightForce Unimount for the Bushnell ERS 3.5 - 21 x 50 (34 mm tube) scope that sits on my 6.5 CM Ruger Precision Rifle. Great combo and a very accurate rifle.

Great video. I took about 2 years (when I had free time, 30 minutes a week or so. Wasn't in a rush) researching scopes, mounts and of course how to properly mount scopes. I bought some miniature levels and rigged up a platform to hold my AR level and I surprised myself after going to the range after mounting my scope because my gun shot much better than I expected. I didn't think it was gonna shoot bad, but since that was my very first scope I've ever mounted along with everything else being new to me like finding mechanical zero and learning how much adjustment your scope has etc, I just wasn't sure. Oh yeah and I also installed a free floating Midwest Industries rail so I'm sure that helped with my guns accuracy, at least a little bit. My point in all this is after doing ALL the research I did, it turning out great - watching this video and listening to what you're saying is vindicated me in what I learned from watching countless videos on here and reading as many articles as I could before I mounted my scope. My scope's 3x9 powered and has a BDC reticle and I really do like it, but I wanna buy a QD mount for it and buy a red dot which I also want to have a QD mount for which is why I watched this video. I wanna have in my range bag both a traditional scope that's in it's QD mount solid ready to go/get mounted on my AR, and same for a red dot (I'm thinking Aimpoint Pro maybe) so I can change from scope to red dot any time or if a certain situation calls for it and I KNOW when I mount either that they're zero'd and ready to go, no adjustments needed !! I like this mount in the video, but unfortunately I have a lot of other obligations so I don't have too much extra money floating around so I've found what I think is the best QD mount for the money, and that's the Burris P.E.P.R mount. It's only (I just checked) 104$ on Amazon and does have 12 screws like this one in this video to attach the scope to the rings which I of course definitely like...

Excellent explanations, which you manage to do very well... you would've made a great school teacher. I mount mine in a very similar fashion, using the plumb line to confirm, but there is an additional step to triple check everything if you are so inclined. After you have your rifle zeroed, take a large sight-in target and hang it using a plumb for the vertical crosshair line... shoot at center, then, similar to a tracking test, run the turrets up and down a few mils (or MOA) and shoot again while aiming at center. The shots should track perfectly up & down the vertical line of the target... if they veer, say left when you go low and right when you go up, or vise-versa, your scope is incorrectly aligned to the bore.

First off.... Great Vid. I really like watching your vids.... there are a couple of things I have to chime in on though... I have been using ADM mounts for about 8 years now, and have done a couple of vids for them.... That being said, I always recommend installing the mount the same way each time....being tighten the rear lever first then the front...if you do it opposite you can change the torque on the mount and throw it off slightly.... on how tight you got the levers, well that is a matter of preference... but you did forget to mention that the nuts on the levers are Six sided... that is very important to setting the levers... I use the Level to Level as well but I put the base level on the Receiver rather thank the handguard because there can be a slight difference between the two.... again Great vid and just putting out my own opinion and experience.... Target On....

No special tools method. Piece of string, anything heavy you can attach string to and a level. (Plumb Bob optional) 1: "Level BORE. Lay level across top of rail, or across top of scope mount(s) spread out as far as possible if not a AR / rifle that does not have full length picatinny rail. * If weapon has a BULL BARRE /non tapered barrel use level to level it. 2: Level the weapon left to right plane aka side to side with a plumb bob @ rear of weapon. Hang a plumb bob at REAR (Butt stock /pistol grip) so you can tell right/ left is of weapon canted or not. 3: Mount scope, have plumb bob hanging against wall (Or mark the wall).. LOOK thru scope.. Assuming horizontal and vertical reticial are at 90 degrees to each other aligning with vertical should be final step. Tighten- recheck. Done.

Dude I don’t think you need to torque the levers that tight. AMD states that you should be able to remove it by hand and not to over tighten it if I remember correctly
@calebclark67397 жыл бұрын
This works with American Defense mounts. I found out this method doesn't work with the Burris mount or Leupolds mount. Cause they don't mount to the rail square and evenly. On those mounts, I had to tighten the mounts and then use a level on the rail on the muzzle end. Look back through the scope and match the reticle with the level.

I commend your mentioning of the breaking in of the threads by multiple tightening! This is a much overlooked reason for new installations coming loose! When final torquing clamps with multiple fasteners next to each other on the same clamp, the final step should be to go back and forth between them with a tightening only action until no further tightening occurs. Often times tightening the second fastener will loosen the first one that you tightened and so-on until the clamp is fully squared at final torque.
@bigaarmory1007 жыл бұрын
The video is an informative video for installing a quick disconnect mount for your scope however I think the video is incomplete without actually showing shots on target, removing the scope, replacing the scope and then putting shots back on target and repeating that cycle several times.
@TWANGnBANG7 жыл бұрын
That would only show return to zero on this specific mount, but the techniques work to get the best out of every mount. Plus, I'd have to do the exact same thing without doing all of the tricks I mention so you can see the difference. Just take my word for it- the steps are easy to do and learned from guys who get shot at by their targets. ;)
@pwnedbyscope7 жыл бұрын
Whoa, that is not how you torque a fastener, what your trying to do when you torque something is tighten it just to the point that the threads would start "deform". the un-torquing then re-torquing causes un-needed strain an deformation

seems too tight on the qd. always had great success with lighter tension. edit: the instructions for the tension say the correct amount of tension is the maximum amount you apply with 1 hand to move the lever to a closed position. how much tension you use is a personal preference and up to your own judgement , but remember the system has a lot more contact than the competition, so you may not need to push the lever as hard to achieve the same result

My pet peeve: Scope leveling. First, the one and only thing that really MATTERS is that, when sighting - in, and when shooting, it's necessary that the vertical crosshair be PLUMB -- which, strictly speaking, has nothing to do with the mount or the gun. THUS: 1) Scope leveling is only necessary when a permanently mounted scope level is in place. That's because no matter HOW you mount the scope/mount/rifle, if you tilt when you shoot, it's THAT tilt which will count. IOW: without a scope level in place it's up to the shooter to ESTIMATE whether the vertical crosshair is plumb - if he can, he's OK, if he can't, then it doesn't matter how the scope was mounted. 2) If you DO use a scope level (which displays "level" when the vertical crosshair is plumb) then mounting the scope level vs the mount or rifle in unimportant. This issue of centering the vertical reticle to the bore (not "perpendicular") is of very minor importance (even at very long range). What's important is TILT of the verticle crosshair at long range. Off center can put you off maybe an inch or two at 1000 yards (provided the vertical crosshair is plumb); a 5 degree vertical crosshair tilt can put you off one or two FEET. Lots of long range shooters in fact tilt their rlfles a bit AND use a perfectly plumb vertical crosshair -- to address issues of comfort and steadier hold.
@TWANGnBANG7 жыл бұрын
You are incorrect about the crosshairs not needing to be perpendicular to the bore as any adjustment of the elevation or simply doing a holdover will be off axis to the bore even if your gun is level. You need a level gun and a perpendicular reticle- one without the other will lead to windage errors. If you don't use a level on your gun, you are still better off ensuring your reticle is perpendicular to your bore as you will better be able to estimate proper level from the reticle's relationship to the features in nature that are generally plumb or level. This won't even be something you try to do. It will just be naturally what you do. If the reticle is not perpendicular to the bore, you will be less successful with your natural alignment. TL;DR- both a level rifle and a reticle perpendicular to the bore are needed for precise shots at varying ranges
@GetMeThere17 жыл бұрын
TWANGnBANG What does "perpendicular to the bore" even mean? Many mounts, for example, are built with a 20-30 MOA ramp, for use beyond the typical adjustment range of most scopes. Such a scope wouldn't be "perpendicular" to the bore. I think you must mean "centered" with the bore - that a line through the vertical cross hair would extend through the center of the bore axis. This is what is typically meant in such topics. And indeed, that is only of very minor importance vs can't in the crosshair. If you will explain what you mean by "perpendicular" in this use I can explain further.
@TWANGnBANG7 жыл бұрын
You're confusing the bore of the scope with the reticle. You can call it "centered" if you like- it is still critical for the vertical line of the reticle to align top dead center over the bore of the barrel (which would also make it perpendicular to the bore).
@GetMeThere17 жыл бұрын
Let's look at some examples. Assume the vertical crosshair is always plumb, but that the rifle was canted when the scope was mounted with a plumb crosshair (which would result in the crosshair NOT being centered through the bore -- or not perpendicular, as you are referring to it. Furthermore, for this discussion, it's OK to ignore things like wind, spin drift, coriolis effects, etc. Example 1: The worst possible misalignment. If we mount the scope with the vertical turret to the side, and the windage turret at the top (with a mounting height of 1.5"). To then sight and shoot this setup with the vertical crosshair plumb would require that the rifle be canted completely on it's side, and the vertical crosshair would be 1.5" "away" from the center of the bore. If sighted in at 100 yards, lateral error at 200 yards would be 1.5", 300 would be 3", etc, and at 1000 yards lateral error would be 13.5" Example 2: Realistic rifle cant. It's generally agreed that one can easily detect a cant of 5 degrees in the vertical crosshair. How will a rifle shoot which has a plumb vertical crosshair mounted on a rifle that was canted 5 degrees (at 1.5" height of the crosshairs above the bore). Excel gives an offset from the center of the bore (SIN(5*PI()/180)*1.5) = 0.13", and at 1000 yards that would produce a lateral error of 9*0.13 = 1.18" which is a trivial amount at 1000 yards (about 0.1 MOA -- better than any gun can be expected to shoot realistically) Example 3: Realistic vertical crosshair cant. Assume our rifle is level, but the crosshair itself is canted 5 degrees. Assume the rifle is sighted in at 100 yards. To make a shot with a 308 with 175 gr bullets requires a holdover (or turret adjustment) of nearly THIRTY FEET at 1000 yards. The lateral error there is =(SIN(5*PI()/180)*30) = 2.6 FEET! which is about 30 times the error due to rifle cant. From the above you can see that crosshair "centering" (being perpendicular, as you put it) -- in a typical fashion (

Let's try this another way- go ahead and mount a scope with 5 degrees of cant, level the gun in a shooting rest, center the crosshairs at a target 1000yds away, and then dial in your hold. You'll be able to see the windage deviation from the cant happen right before your eyes, and it's not going to be 1.8". Not even close. :)

Ehhhh, everyone is stealing Spuhr's thunder on the wedge idea. So why not get poor and buy a Spuhr?
@TWANGnBANG7 жыл бұрын
I have one coming my way, in fact. However, not every application needs a Spuhr, though every scope needs to be leveled.

Agreed. I have a pair of Spuhrs. They are extremely high quality. I have one mounted on my SPR and I plan on bringing it out to the benefit this weekend. You're more than welcome to play around with it.

"for less than 40" :p I meant that it looked so simple that I was sure I could find it for half that, but I can't!

Somebody might come out with a cheaper version of this, but I'm not sure I'd trust it. The material doesn't cost that much, but it must be very precisely machined and finished or it won't stay square. That's where the cost to manufacture is spent.

I like my empty coke bottle scope better. it's much cheaper.
