Not exaggerating when I say I think I'd likely hve given up on this hobby all together if it weren't for you Mr.Bardwell with your OUTSTANDING+HELPFUL+ENTERTAINING et cetera content; my local quad shop & whoop racing league: "Full Send FPV" [Denver CO] and last but not least 2 pilots named "Mop-Bucket" & "Propknocker" that I'm blessed to call friends & rip packs together. (plus fix my quad, teach me tricks, and give me used/new parts LOL) TLDR; THANK YOU BROTHER! Wish I could give more, as you undoubtedly earned it, but will send some more $cratch your way when able to. Anyways, wrap this up by saying once again thank you Jesus/God bless you & the family + friends, stay safe, and know I'm sending nothing but love and prayers for nothing but gnarly yet clean flights with many packs to rip in your future! Bardwell is the absolute goat he deserves thr praise and love this tune is lovely and i have been struggling with PIDS so much recently that I flew with no filters stock pids for so long. Long live bardwell

This feels like a good start. The thing I loved about your earlier PID tuning videos was that you were willing to push the sliders too high and too low to demonstrate the kind of errors pilots should expect. With 4.3, so much of the controller is actively managed by other functions that we're asked to be moderate with the sliders and trust in the machine. It's almost enough to send people to emuflight. Your stuff is great. I look forward to the blackbox rundown.

I would say the opposite. That the 4.3 pid loop is so forgiving that it's difficult to get obvious bad behavior put of it.

@@JoshuaBardwell I guess there's nothing wrong with things being easy. Do you suppose that forgiving PID loop will start to break down when it's working on larger/smaller quads?

It's tuned mostly for 5" I think, so the defaults will be worse on other sizes. But the forgiving nature hopefully will hold true.

@JoshuaBardwell Picking a lower Hz on the radio side will give more latency. Picking a lower Hz on the betaflight side will actually lower latency from RC smoothing. More averaging is applied to higher speed links because increasing packet rate increases jitter AND you can get away with more smoothing because the latency is so low. Best of both worlds.

I come from fixed wing and helicopter Los I thought I would just jump in and be an amazing fpv pilot. Lol I bought the RR skyliner pro and 8 packsby the 6th pack I could split s a light pole I've spent hours watching your videos.i use your links to purchase the perfect build in pieces and a moongoat. I work 7days a week and have to make Time to fly I just don't have the time to program and play with rates and pid tuning I got the skyliner and it is geared towards a new pilot so much bounce back and the rate profiles are not good I would pay for the chance to fly one of Bardwells tunes with rates I can see already work I think I could learn quicker

This video started out awesome but at its end sort of makes me feel, Dont try to tune too hard, just enjoy and keep tweaking the tune at the end of every flying day to sort of over time make the build better. Because one of the hard facts with FPV is we will at some point crash, everyone does and you will too, so if that crash day comes while you were were OCD tuning the quad for perfection and all of a sudden something goes bad and the quad is no longer in the same mechanical condition as it once was, its going to be pretty damn depressing. ( I am talking from my experience) Also I feel tuning without blackbox is more difficult as you dont have concrete evidence its just "i feel" which needs you to be an expert pilot, but we want to push the setup so anyone with the same build can enjoy . I am one of those people who like to perfect a build and then brag about it and let others fly and say " oh wow man! this is such a good build and tune!" I request a pid toolbox comparison of how the tune evolved as i am very sure a lot of people coming from Chris Rosser would love to see how the lines change when the sliders are moved. So we know what is good enough instead of keep chasing the "perfectly damped response".

Great video and information. I watched your 4.2 pre-set video and then this one. I have been anxious/unsure about using those pre-sets but these two videos convinced me to give it a try (as soon as the weather warms up here in WV.) Also, i learned in this video that we could select multiple things in the pre-set to change...didn't know that that. Keep up the great work, i appreciate you.

The problem I have with PID tuning and Filters is, you said the further you reduce your filters the warmer the motors could get, but you also said the further you push your D gains the motors could get hot. So how do you know if you just need more filters or less D gain? I have a similar problem with P gain and Stick response. You and many others talk about bounce back on hard rolls, but you can get the double zip from feedforward being too high. Aren't those the same thing? A zip zip sound from over correcting aka bounce back?

Great video. I've been flying stock 4.3 because I don't have a clue about tuning and, as far as I can tell, it flies just fine. Can't wait to fiddle some performance out of them.

My main takeaways: use the presets; the defaults are very good; when you hand tune, you probably won't be able to feel the difference; and when you hand tune, you make the quad less resilient. I can't wait for 4.3 to release.

Yep, same for me too. I use the presets, tweak the master a little if needed and tune dynamic idle for a little bit of better propwash handling. ;)

Can't wait to give 4.3 a try! Yes, these PRESETS sound like a step in the right right direction! Also, want to use 4.3 because sounds like they finally fixed the CrossFire "LQ" (Link Quality) OSD issue when using with the DJI Goggles.

Used your frame with t-motor f40's (because 4s) sharkbyte, blheli-32, and an f7 fc, on betaflight 4.3. By far my best flying drone. First time using 2306 and rpm filtering and its my lightest quad. So I'm not sure what gives it the qualities i love. Lol about to re-build it with a 20x20 fc and the 1w hd-zero board.

@joshuabardwell Crazy question, but why did your video cut out of your goggles at the end of the video. The reason I ask is I just recently had this issue with my DJI goggles and I’m now nervous to fly again. As a note: when I lost video feed, the screen went black, I disarmed and video came right back. Not a full reset on goggles. Any thoughts. As always thanks for the content.

It had something to do with the damaged motor because when I tried to turtle mode, I lost video again, but it came back when I stopped.

I love the qav-s but lumenier needs to thicken the x plate that the arms brace against. That thing is fragile as shit. I’m gonna try to put two of them in there, hopefully it holds up

Thank you Joshua. What should we choose if we are not running the new high speed protocols? I still run a fair amount of D16 with telemetry on crazybee f4 boards and I know what I would choose for ELRS and tracer, but not standard FrSky. Do we just use the defaults and not apply a preset?

Great video JB! At the 34:34 mark you lose video feed, I'm having a similar issue as my video feed freezes when I arm the quad. When I power up everything at the start video to goggles is good but as soon as I arm it locks up. Wondering what could be causing this? Thanks

for some reason i cant get bi directional working on my mamba f7 stack ..everything is up to date but the option unchecks its self in betaflight

Turn off temp protection in blheli or change 32.8-32.7. There is a software bug. Dianone changed chipsets in ESC and that's why they are a problem

I haven't looked at it at all yet. I've been waiting for the official release. I know it's coming with all sorts of new improvements and do-dads. Are there a lot of presets for a lot of BNF's? Are the presets mostly for 5" drones, or are they for 3.5, 3", and smaller micros too? Thanks for replying! 😎🤘

I think I finally understand (a little?). Enjoyed this presentation. However, I am mostly a long range flyer looking for smooth videos, so I mainly need smooth and maximum efficiency. Would using the standard pids be best; where should I start, or just fly and call it good?

I recommend starting with the master multiplier slider; it multiplies your default pid values up or down depending on how you move it so it just makes the pids more aggressive in general or more loose in general. If you move it to the right your quad will feel more locked in and if you move it to the left it will feel looser. It's a good start.

Yeah... the first time this happens with FPV cycle motors I'm throwing the xing2 2207's back on. I feel stupid for swapping them off seeing these things fall apart still. I couldn't tell a big enough difference between them & the imperials anyway, but you know which one is more durable.

I got a noob question. When I plug my drone into beta flight and spin up the motors, the motors don’t return to normal when I recenter my sticks. Like if I yaw the motors don’t return to normal after I center the left stick, the motors are like stuck wide open. I don’t know if I explained this well but thanks for the help

Can you explain why aliasing is reduced by the second pt1 type filter at 1000hz? The filtrering is done after sampling and the ghost frequencies should still get through

@Joshua Bardwell hey man, getting kinda confused on the green bars right below the sliders that say profile independent/dependent filter settings. While you were doing the filters being that the dropdown box is on off does that mean that all the filters in the first column are inactive?

I thought Chris T said that the gyro LPF was necessary for anti-aliasing only for d-shot 300? I'd have to go back and rewatch the Rosser video but that sounds familiar.

Shouldn't good prop-wash handling sound "bad" as the quad quickly reacts to the turbulent air to keep itself stable?

When it's handled well, it is smooth and fast enough that you don't hear it.

Dynamic Idle also helps with propwash. Enable it and set it to about 3,000 RPM and it makes the props not spin too slow and reduces the risk of prop blades stalling (prop wash)

This will also decrease your throttle resolution. In the inverse way of throttle scale of 6s batteries on 4s motors.

@@jarredgallaher2643 it doesn't decrease your throttle resolution. quite the opposite. your quad has higher authority for turns etc with dynamic idle. other than with normal idle your motor commands can actually go to 0 if needed. it's a killer feature in bf 4.3! just try it out 🙂

when i turn off the adc filter on the Mambo it’s back on when i turn the radio off then back on again.

I can't seem to disable gyro lowpass 1 without having a rough idle in bf4.3. my quadcopter is still a relatively new clean high end build and i used to be able to run filter settings very much on the agressive side in bf4.2. any idea why disabling gyro lowpass 1 causes rough jittery idle? The filter sliders are default.

lol so im a newbie to race drones and have a tbs 16s crossfire edition and nazgul 5 compatible with my dji goggles all good but after all updates and betaflight, when i arm motors all good untill i use throttle over half and throttle goes to full and stays there with no control? if i stay under half all good? darn< lol

Hey guys, I now it sounds not nice but is there something like a short version to safe as a text how to tune a drone? Like start with putting D down and get p to this or this value/feeling/behauvior ? It would be super nice since I have the feeling this is something you should do with time and space plus your computer to tune it. (I´m asking because I´m living in a city and always going back to check the internet sucks)

The motor bell dropping caused me to lose video I think, because after crashing I tried to turtle mode and as soon as I spun motors, the video cut out.

Hmm, regarding the presets. I noticed looking at their CLI commands that for example "freestyle RC smoothing" overrides the values set by ELRS 500hz. Seems that the ELRS RC_Link already has RC Smoothing presets, so it seems they contradict each other. In this case which one should we choose? Is it a case of trying to see which one feels better?

Do you have to turn off the ADC filter in Freedom TX? I have a Tango 2 and don't have an option for ADC filter in the hardware tab. Trying to apply the Crossfire freestyle preset and it's giving me warnings to "make absolutely sure ADC filter is turn off." Scary!

It's always off in FreedomTX. They just got rid of it.

Great stuff as always! From comments people seem to love BetaFlight 4.3 release. My new iFlight Nazgul Evoque (digital vs) came configured with BetaFlight 4.2, but want to put 4.3 on it. Wondering how good people found the “BF 4.3 Migration Tool”? Any quirks people running into? Thx! 👍

What link speed are you supposed to use for crossfire when it's dynamic? Doesn't the Hz change depending on link quality?

The best thing is to lock crossfire at 50 or 150 and not use dynamic.

The RC_Smoothing option does not show up in the Presets in Betaflight 4.3.0 What can I do? As well as the ADC Filter in the Tango 2.

They changed rc smoothing and just put them all in rc link.

@@JoshuaBardwell Alright, Thank you. Do you also know something about the ADC Filter option in the Hardware menu from the Tango 2? It does not appear at my Tango 2... The betaflight preset for RC_LINK CRSF says to turn off ADC Filter as well.

Could you do pid videos with a session or hyper smooth turned off? It might be off in this but would be nice to be sure. Maybe 4.3 is finally a good BF again. I will test the RC

Obviously, having hypersmooth turned on during a PID tuning video would be counterproductive. You can see the props in the corner of the screen never move, which confirms that stabilization is off.

I am a bit confused about 4.3 Mainly on what boards are compatible for example i have 2 fpv the Mobula 7 F4 crazybee and the tinyhawk V1

All boards besides f3 I believe. I may be wrong but deff not f3 boards. F4 f7 fine.

Lock CRSF at either 150 or 50 Hz and then apply the appropriate preset.

Is RC3 solid? OK to migrate to now or better to wait for final 4.3 release? Any idea when this would be?

There are still a few serious bugs to work out, such as the problem with failsafe when using an SPI based elrs receiver. If you aren't affected by one of these bugs, rc3 is basically good.
