I do love it when Beth Rigby gets her teeth into politicians, especially incompetent and lying Tories. She hits the nail on the head every time. But she also needs to challenge Kier Starmer for saying more use needs to be made of the private health sector. In the short-term maybe, but we’re in this mess partly because of private health providers who naturally build profit into their contracts with the NHS. Also if we paid nurses and doctors etc. better, there would be far less of a dependency on nursing agencies.

The only way to recover the waiting times to something approaching acceptable is a short term boost to treatment capacity followed by adequate capacity and funding going forward. Therefore I think short term use of private capacity is entirely appropriate (although I doubt there is enough private capacity to do more than be of some help rather than a solution). But in the longer term we need to avoid it being used as a privatisation by stealth.
