Bicycle Touring The Netherlands | Dutch Forests | Amsterdam
The lovely forests of the Netherlands show us a surprise we didn’t expect. We make one of our famous one pot veggie meals. Then we leisurely cycle through the countryside exploring the sights. And last but not least we ride through the heart of Amsterdam.

Many, many years ago I cycled through the Netherlands and absolutely loved it. I did not even camp like Maudi and Eric. I just had a rail pass, and with that you could rent a bike at any train station, for just a few guilders (yes, it was that long ago!). The paths along the canals and through the neighbourhoods were just perfect. And the cities are quite close together, so you could visit and return in a day. Before Airbnb, there was a tourist office in many rail stations that would set you up with a room in a private home. It was ideal for the solo traveler. If I could do it again, I would.

@@WheelstoWander I would love to see an update on this type of travel in the Netherlands and surrounding areas. For example, is it still possible to rent bikes and travel by train? And what about those home accommodations or bike hotels? And if I bring my own bike, what is the best way to travel between cities where I don't want to ride? This would be a great alternative to the wild camping which is not always permitted, and because it requires much less equipment to carry. You could feature bike-friendly businesses (and eats!) in your country and show off the extensive bike path network.

The Netherlands was the first country I toured on bicycle, the lush pastures, the curious cows and the best cycling infrastructures ever ! I did it a second time and then thought there were way too many people on very little land, everything felt cropped ! Anyways....take care guys !

hey, hey you two. Thanks again for a wonderfully crafted video. It is a visual pleasure. As an Irishman I would plead with you to leave the skins on the spuds (Irish term for potatoes) but it depends on the age of the spud. Those looked pretty new. It really changes the flavour of the whole thing. Another tip from Ireland about cows (our national herd is nearly twice the human population) is to check whether those curious beasts with the beautiful eyelashes still have their balls (sorry to be crude). If they have their balls then stay the heck clear. If they have been gelded they are very docile. Fair winds you excellent humans. Michael from Ireland

I came to your videos late, just finished the round the world tour, which was beautifully shot and making my way through the remainder of your back catalogue with joy - you are definitely my favourite bike tourers on YT. Understandably this is an old video, so the question may not be seen. But how did you guys find bike touring as a vegetarian/Vegan? I imagine this must be quite complicated in more remote areas of the world.

Kees

The plants are called stinging nettles, the early shoots are edible and similar in taste and nutritional profile to spinach, with hints of cucumber. The stinging causing compounds, mainly histamines, break down when you cook it. Older leaves do become somewhat bitter so you want to pick them early in the season before they produce flowers. Yes, cows are very curious creatures. Always want to check things out.

I can't believe that you are wearing such summerly clothes. We are only a few hours away, in a south-easterly direction and today it snowed on and off. Brrr. Nice Video. Thankyou for sharing. PS. Those cattle look like very young (Yearlings) Charolais. - a French beef cattle developed from Jura cattle. All young cattle are curious, especially in small groups. Potentially dangerous but I'm not sure if they would jump the fence, especially if it is electrified.

Nice video! So good to watch you cycling with freedom and sunny weather while we are still locked down here in cold wet Wales. Your videos from last year are cheerful and inspiring. I am so looking forward to when life looks more like your film again. One thing I have been wondering while watching this recent series -- I understood that wild camping is prohibited in Holland and the rule strictly enforced by the police. Do you camp in official only spots, or become sneaky in deeper woodland? To be honest, what I have read about the camping situation has put me off considering your country for cycle touring. I need to be able to stop when my ancient knees tell me, rather than pushing too far to the next official site.

The prickly plants are nettles and very good to eat like spinach - pinch the tops off, when you cook them they act like spinach and are related to mint - high in Vitamin C and E. No camping allowed here in the UK, but we can exercise all day, pretty much. I cycled 12 miles this morning. Some people are lucky enough to find places they can camp in stealth mode without detection, i don't think the cops are that bothered only if you're really dumb and obvious. Most cows are okay i find, i have problems with humans. Wow, look at all those flat paths - I'm envious..lol...anything that's less than a 1:9 hill is cool to me. There's a saying here that the Dutch get their legs later in life as they're born with spoked wheels.

Cows can be curious so I doubt they were going to get aggressive. I've seen a few videos where they take an interest in people playing musical instruments.

Cows can be aggressive, especially, I am not kidding, to very short people. They probably mistake their contours for predators like wolves. And when they attack, they instinctively attack together.
